The thing with u17 is that the coach must also be a scout. A good coach might not be a good scout. Manu Garba is a good scout, we can see it even from the additions to the u20 team, Nwobodo, omego etc.

Many countries do not change their u17 coaches for years. That is to ensure that the talents keep getting discovered. Spain, Mexico

I did not have the opportunity to watch this team play, so I can not contribute to this. If the team is very poor, then it means some gems were missed in the camp coach Amunike organized. I say the camping process should be done again and top friendlies should be organized especially against the Malian side.

Amuneke Apologises For Niger Failure

After returning to the country on Monday from Niger Republic, where they came fourth at the CAF U17 championship, Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has apologized to Nigerians for their failure to win the competition.

The Nigerian U17’s were beaten 1-0 by South Africa in the semifinal and 3-1 by Guinea in the third place match, which ensured the Eaglets only came home with a World Cup qualification. A development which has prompted Amuneke to issue an apology to Nigerians.

“I have to apologize to Nigerians for not winning the competition. The expectation was that we would win it but it just didn’t work for us and we are very sorry that we disappointed Nigerians.

“After we qualified for the World Cup, we set our targets to winning the competition but for some reason I would say luck was just not our side,” he said.

But despite the disappointment of not winning a third CAF U17 championship, AMuneke assured that they will have a better outing at the World Cup in Chile later in the year.

“The effort we are putting no is to ensure we have a better outing at the World Cup in Chile. The competition in Niger has opened our eyes to many things and now we have to adjust and make sure we are ready for the world,” he added.

It would be nice if you could find out if the coach is satisfied with the talents in the squad. I know the technical committee recommended an overhauling of the team but is the coach satisfied with them?

The team needs changes in certain areas not overhauling. But a lot of work needs to be done. Not a world cup team.

Osimhen, Nwakali, Abbas, abdullahi.. possible future super eagle

Do you think the problem could be corrected with training. A lot of work have been put into these guys for Amunike to start afresh.

Either way, due to time constraint, the camp should be reopened.More expenses.

I still feel Coach Amunike should make a statement concerning this issue. Is he satisfied eight he talents on ground?

Better players are needed, I find it difficult to believe that these are the best players found in Nigeria.

It is not just about coaching.

Also, I was hoping Amuneke would have put some of Manu's philosophy but he has a different style.

Golden Eaglets Coach Emmanuel Amuneke Storms Ibadan For Scouting

Nice report. As long as the Coach can spot his mistakes, with time he can develop a good squad.

Coach Emmanuel Amunike should look into discovering players with skill, who have the ability to keep the ball confidently. It is important for a side who wants to pass the ball. If you look at the present Liverpool side, Lalana, Sterling, Jordan Ibe, Coutinho, Markovic, Moreno can comfortably hold the ball And take out players individually.

You notice the same With Manu Garba boys with Iheanacho, Ezeh, Yahaya, Pygbara, Nwobodo etc.

Skill is the most important aspect when a passing side is built. When these players are molded into a passing side, they become difficult to stop.

Interview With Emmanuel Amuneke

After reports emanated that he may be withdrawn from the head coach’s position of the Golden Eaglets ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup, sl10.ng speaks exclusively to Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke and he shared his thoughts on the development. The former Super Eagles winger also speaks on the vacant coaching position of the Super Eagles. Enjoy.

Sl10: Thank you very much for giving us your time, let’s start by taking a look at how you’re coming along with preparations for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile.

Amuneke: First of all we thank God that we have qualified for the World Cup in Chile. When we went to Niger, the biggest objective was to be in Chile and we thank God that we were able to achieve that. So we’re no longer talking about Niger, we’re talking about Chile now and we know that for us to do well in Chile, we must prepare ourselves. What we are doing now is to evaluate ourselves as team. Not individually, but collectively and then looking at the areas we can be able to strengthen our team and that’s the only thing we can do now.

Sl10: And talking about strengthening your team, does this mean you’ll have another open screening exercise, or you’ll just scout for players?

Amuneke: We already have a team on ground. What we’re looking for are players that can add more value to what we have and we are reaching out to the Nigerian youths. Since I came back from Niger, I’ve not rested, I’ve been on the road travelling from one state to the other and hopefully when we are done, we will have players that can live up to expectations.

Sl10: Don’t you think it would be best to have a new screening exercise because it is believed in some quarters that the best Nigerian U17 players were not taken to Niger?

Amuneke: If you’re telling me that the best players were not in Niger, then I don’t know which player or players they think should have been there that wasn’t. Everybody knows what this category is all about and everybody knows what it is, except if we’re not being realistic to ourselves. We know how complex it is in this category, so we must deal with the complexities that this category brings. There are a lot of factors involved in this category and whether we like it or not, we cannot shy away from responsibilities. And the only thing we can do is to find ways to meet up with the challenges that this categories bring.

Sl10: There’s this report that Manu Garba and Nduka Ugbade might be drafted in to lead the team to Chile, while you serve as an assistant. What’s your reaction to this?

Amuneke: Nobody has said anything of such to me and I have not heard anything like that from the federation. I am just hearing this for the first time, so I can’t really say much about it.

Sl10: Alright then. As defending World Champions at the U17 level, do you think this will put some pressure on you and your team?

Amuneke: Nothing and nobody is putting us under any pressure. We are defending champions but there is nothing like us getting mad because we are defending champions. The only thing we can do is what is right and that is what we are doing. In football you can only predict but I know I am focused in what I want to do and the objectives that I have.

Sl10: Finally, the NFF are yet to resolve their issues with Keshi. Are you disturbed with this development and do you think Keshi is the right man for the Super Eagles now?

Amuneke: I’m not disturbed because I’m not the one employing coaches. I believe when the time comes they will act but I’ve been reading about them trying to reach an agreement with Keshi. I believe they will give us a coach that will build our national team. If they go with Keshi, fine and if they choose someone else, fine. My opinion is that if they decide to give it to Keshi, we must support him and that’s my opinion. Whether we like or not, we must support Keshi and besides Keshi has played for this country and he has also won the nations cup both as a player and as a coach, so we must support him. Keshi may not be perfect but is there anybody on earth who is? So that’s the way life is and we should learn to encourage and support our own.

Sl10: Thank you very much for your time

Amuneke: You’re welcome

Very insightful interview with the U17 Boss. It revealed a lot. What is most important is that he believes in his team and he is looking for players to make the team stronger.

I hope he takes his time to find better players.

Concerning the open screening exercise, I think some coaches are good in some aspects and some are not.

Coach Samson Siasia did a good job in his screening and discovered some good players. But, I did not hear of Manu Garba using the same method. I think he scouted academies and built his team.

So, the open screening did not work for Coach Amuneke, I think he should continue his tour and select talents he feels will work with his team.

I believe this U17 team can be better before the world cup.. We just need 2 work on the defence ahead of the world cup.
Op hav u heard of Ovie Ejaria of liverpool, This guy will be a gud addition. Habib Makanjuola should also join this team. Its like he doesn't play for chelsea anymore or no more playing time. And that guy has such a great talent. I also would like to see bobby adekanye too.
But this team needs to work on the defence.

Agent Dismisses Rumours Kelechi Nwakali Is Undergoing Man City Medical

Reports suggesting that Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali is in the United Kingdom undergoing a medical with Manchester City are incorrect.

In February, SL10.ng exclusively reported that Manchester City had monitored his performances at the CAF Under 17 Championship.

Kelechi Nwakali's agent , Klay Ekeocha, has not denied that The Citizens are exploring ways to sign his client but has put to bed rumours claiming that a deal is imminent.

''The report is incorrect. We are still discussing with Manchester City and Kelechi Nwakali is in Imo State (Nigeria) not the UK,'' says Klay Ekeocha to SL10.ng.

''Of course there has been contact with Manchester City, you know I have been in UK to arrange everything.

''It's right to say Manchester City lead the race for his signature, but the race is not over yet. ''

The Belgian-based agent added that Nwakali is yet to attain the age of majority and can't sign a professional deal with The Citizens or any other European club for that matter.

''I can not deny that we are getting closer to City lately, but nothing is signed. And we are discussing with a lot of teams.

''Kelechi is underage so there's no rush for him to sign a contract with any club,'' Klay Ekeocha concluded.

Agent Klay Ekeocha is best known for brokering the deal that took Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo to Standard Liege in 2011.

The only word to describe Nigeria's past
in the FIFA U-17 World Cup is glorious.
No other country has won the
tournament as often as the Golden
Eaglets (four times) and only Brazil can
match their seven semi-final appearances. Remarkably, the team
has made it through to the decider
every time they advanced to the last
four. The west Africans won the
inaugural competition in China PR in
1985 and added titles in 1993, 2007 and last time out. They lost the 1987,
2001 and 2009 finals. The only time
they qualified for the global event but
failed to progress out of the group
stage was in 2003, when they were
denied a place in the last eight by the drawing of lots after finishing equal on
points, goals and goal difference with
Costa Rica. The present As overwhelming pre-tournament
favourites the Golden Eaglets had an
easy passage into the last four at the
African championships, thereby booking
their place in Chile 2015. Victories over
hosts Niger (2-0) and Zambia (3-1) and a 1-1 draw against Guinea saw them

Man City Wonderkid Impressive In Loss To Middlesbrough

Anglo-Nigerian wonderkid Tom Dele-Bashiru was in action for Manchester City's Under 18 squad in their 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough in the Premier Academy League on Saturday.

With the young Manchester City Under 18s trailing their opponents 1-0, manager Jason Wilcox brought on the attacking midfielder in the 45th minute to add more firepower to his team's attack following an injury to Bersant Celina.

On 73 minutes, Alex Pattison capitalized on some wayward defending by Manchester City to put Boro 2-0 up.

Tom Dele-Bashiru would have pulled a goal back for The Citizens six minutes from time but was denied by Fryer.

The 16-year-old took aim from 25 yards before unleashing a shot which the outstanding goalkeeper punched out for a corner.

Dele-Bashiru is considered one of the most promising youngsters in England so much so that the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool attempted to prise him away from Manchester City a year ago.

Wearing the number ten jersey, he made his international debut for the England Under 16s in their friendly with Belgium last August.

Kigbu Extends Man City Contract Amid Interest From Man United

SL10.ng can exclusively report that Manchester City wonderkid Ashinme Kigbu has put an end to speculation surrounding his future by penning a new contract with The Citizens.

With the 16 - year -old's former deal set to expire at the end of this season, contract talks between Manchester City chiefs and the player's intermediary took place for about three months before the parties finally reached an agreement.

Ashinme Kigbu has appended his signature to a two-year scholarship contract that commits him to The Etihad Stadium outfit until 2017.

Before sealing a new deal with Manchester City, the defender was courted by a plethora of Premier League teams led by Manchester United.

The likes of Arsenal,Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were also plotting a summer swoop for the Anglo - Nigerian.

Described as a modern day stopper by his minders, Kigbu has been on the books of the youth teams of The Citizens since the 2011 - 2012 season.

Born in Jos, the youngster is eligible to turn out for Nigeria but is believed to be on the radar of the English FA, according to his dad, Vincent Kigbu.

Nigeria U17 Star Delays Man City Decision

Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali has declared that he will make a decision on whether to sign on the dotted line for Manchester City after the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile.

Man City chiefs recently invited him to England to show him the club's facilities and training ground but talks of a deal being imminent are wide of the mark for the simple reason that he won't turn 18 until June 5, 2016.

''Kelechi Nwakali has visited Manchester City's academy. We are still discussing with the club,'' Kelechi Nwakali's intermediary, Klay Ekeocha, confided to SL10.ng.

''He was invited to visit the club's academy and that will help him make a decision after the Under 17 World Cup.

''They have a fantastic academy so of course it will help him make a decision.''

In five outings at the 2015 African Under 17 Championship, the Diamond Academy Umuahia starlet scored 3 goals.

The attacking midfielder is also believed to be on the wish-list of other English Premier League powerhouses and an unnamed Spanish club.

Eaglets to feature in invitational tourney in Korea

Nigeria’s U17 team, the Golden Eaglets, will feature in an invitational tournament in South Korea, AfricanFootball.com can report.

The Eaglets, who are coached by former international Emmanuel Amuneke, resumed training camp in Abuja this week.

Led by Kelechi Nwakali, they qualified for the World Cup after they placed fourth at the African championship in Niger in February.

They are preparing for the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile, which begins in October.

Nigeria are the defending champions having won a record fourth trophy in the United Arab Emirates two years ago.

The country’s other conquests were in 1985, 1993 and 2007.

Anglo-Nigerian Strikers Help England U17 Qualify For World Cup.
The England Under 17s have booked their place in the 2015 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile following their 5-3 win against Spain on penalties on Tuesday.
The young Three Lions failed to defend the Euro Under 17 Championship they won in Malta last summer following their 1-0 loss to Russia in the quarter-final but were given another route to qualify for the World Cup with a play-off game against Spain.
Fulham defender Tayo Edun did not feature against the Spaniards after he was sent off in the closing stages against Russia four days ago.
However, two Anglo-Nigerian players were involved at Stadion Hadzhi Dimitar, with manager John Peacock handing a starting berth to Layton Ndukwu while Ike Ugbo started from the bench.
Before Ndukwu was replaced by Ugbo in the 65th minute, the Leicester City striker peppered the Spanish defence, especially in the second half, and would have registered his first goal of the competition if he had been more clinical in front of goal.
At the end of regulation time, and with the scoreline reading 0-0, the winner had to be decided through penalties.
Of all the spot kicks taken by England, none of their players missed, with Ike Ugbo keeping his cool to convert the second penalty.
The Golden Eaglets and the Three Lions will find out their first round opponents at the World Cup when the draw is held in Santiago on August 6.

Eaglets take on Samba Boys of Brazil

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will test their preparedness for the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup when they take on top teams like Brazil at an invitational tournament in South Korea.

These will be just weeks after the Nigeria U20, the Flying Eagles, would have tackled their Brazilian counterparts at the World Cup in New Zealand.

AfricanFootball.com first broke the news that the Eaglets will embark on the trip to Korea.

And now it has been further gathered that the Nigeria U17s will be up against quality opposition like Brazil at the tournament aimed at preparing teams for the World Cup in Chile in October.

The Eaglets have begun a closed training camp in Abuja this week with 30 players and coach Emmanuel Amuneke is due to join the team from his base in Spain by the weekend.

After the reigning world champions finished a disappointing fourth at this year’s CAF U17 Championship in Niger, Amuneke promised they will make it up with a much better showing in Chile.

I don't want to be too critical but what I Amuneke doing in spain, has he finished scouting Nigeria?? His team has only 2 scorers and has too many average players. I hope he has done a lot of scouting already but with only 30 players invited, I am not optimistic.

I just hope the samba boys give our darling Golden Eaglets a good test to enable us have confidence in these lads if at all there are serious like their seniors.

NFF adopts New Strategy for U-17 Team Building.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has adopted a new strategy for building the country’s future U-17 teams, according to the chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Felix Anyansi-Agwu.
Anyansi-Agwu, a ranking member of the NFF Executive Committee and chairman of two–time African champions Enyimba FC, told thenff.comon Sunday that the new measure is pragmatic and cost-effective, and will enable the building of a strong squad within a short period of time.
“I have already discussed the new approach with the present technical crew of the U-17 team led by Emmanuel Amuneke, and they love the idea. We decided on this new approach because it will save us time and funds in the long run.”
He explained: “Instead of doing the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) examination for all manner of players with potential, we just look at those that have potential from the beginning and create a pool of between 60 and 70 players for whom we will conduct the examination.
That way, we can drop those who fail the test quickly and run with those who pass and are therefore eligible.”
The Technical and Development Committee chairman believes conducting the test after identifying players with promise (as was done in the past) was actually putting the cart before the horse.
“There is no point conducting open screening for players and discovering 100 players with some promise, and then you go for the test and 80 of them fail the test. You are back to square one, or at best compelled to make do with the remaining meagre pool, which may be populated by mediocre or average players. If you don’t like what you have, you return to the screening ground and take more players and move them to the laboratory, then probably find out that they also are ineligible. That approach is very long–winding, time-consuming and capital–intensive.
“That was one factor that worked against our U-17 team at the African Championship in Niger Republic earlier this year.”The Golden Eaglets finished in fourth place at the African U-17 Championship in Niger, picking the last African ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup scheduled for Chile later this year.
“We believe the new approach we have adopted is much better and pragmatic, and will enable us to raise a much stronger team for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, and in good time as well.”
