Igbouzo actually, anglicized wrongly as 'Ibusa'.

They speak Enuani Igbo. I have a very good friend from there.
Oh Ibuzo! cheesy

Yes they speak almost the same dialect with the ukwuani

Tiger and leopard are similar physically, I guess it is why you might be mistranslating 'leopard' as 'tiger'. Tigers never existed in ancient africa. The proper translation should be 'the leopard and the lion never meet'.
Just asked my mum. It is the leopard and the lion never meet cheesy cheesy

Really? This would be the first time I'm hearing that. I always knew the tiger to be an Asian species?

But how did the lion and the cheetah and the leopard and the other Big Cats srurvive our ancestors' killing skills, while the (arguably) bigger and more ferocious tiger got wiped off the entire continent? It's puzzling.

You sure? There's an old proverb in ukwuani which says 'the tiger and the lion never meet'

Can you please write the proverb in Ukwuani?

I suspect that sometimes when Africans think they are referring to tigers they really are referring to some other member of the cat family. Sometimes even a civet.

I remember that song as a child growing up in Owerri. The other part goes 'o pu n'isi nwa, o pu n'isi nwa...dererende'. What does 'o pu n'isi nwa mean?'
o pu n'isi nwa means when it refuses to fall off a child's head.
Child have the tendency play on the floor and in that process, ants get into their hair ad refuses to fall out.

Do you guys understand each other well - Ukwuani and Aniocha/Oshimili?
Re: Comprehensive List Of Animals In Igbo Language by Nobody: 10:51pm On Mar 08, 2015
Very true, my Mom people at Nenwe use E instead of A like enya - eye, evo- stomach.
pazienza:

The substitution of "e" for "a" is not peculiar to Ukwuani, it's just that people from that part of Igboland seem to always dwell on their perceived difference from the central Igbo.

Nkanu people in Enugu also substitute "e" for "a", for example the Igbo numbers in Nkanu are:

One- ohu

two- ebuo/ ebunor

three- etor

four- enor

five- ise

six- ishii

seven- Esaa

Eight- Esator

Notice the substitution of "e" for "a" there, this same same substitution is observed throughout Nkanu speech forms, some others they even have reversed substitution between a and e.

for example, cloth in Nkanu dialects is "afe" where as central Igbo is "efe", plate is "afere", instead of "efere".

Still you won't see any Nkanu man trying to hold unto these minor differences.

Always delighted to tap from you.

We do, but not much although there are some differences. There are slight differences.

Years back, I visited an old school mate of mine and spent a rather inordinate amount of time at his place. This chap is from Aniocha South and their dialect is closer to central Igbo. The grandma saw me when I first arrived, and several hours later, the mama emerged from her room and still met me in the sitting room. When she saw me she exclaimed "oburogwoloko!" which is a very Ukwuani ejaculation.

The chap (my friend) now explained that Aniocha and Ukwuani share a lot oof linguistic similarities, but they have more igbo terms than us. Like they say 'anya' instead of 'enya'.

No they are two different types of amphibians: Frog is edible while Toad isn't. The bigger Frog that's almost the size of Toads is called "Odo" with dots on both "O" when pronouncing it

chuxyz:
Dragon fly - kpakpa mmiri
Bat - Usu
Vulture - Udele
Bush fowl - Okwa
Praying Mantis - Ngelengele
Mosquitoe - Anwunta
Bee - A`nu
Tiger - Agu
Lion - Odum
Periwinkle - Isam
Greater cane rat - Nchi

Agu is leopard actually. it was only adopted for tiger since no one has a name for it. There is no tiger in Africa apart from zoos.

I asked because I discovered I have no difficulty at all understanding Aniocha/Oshimili. But I struggle with Ukwuani. I understand somewhat, but no way as well as I understand Aniocha/Oshimili.

Aniocha isn't really like central Igbo (where 'ani' is 'ala'). Aniocha is a lot like the stereotyped Anambra dialect, especially as it spoken in the Idemmili area, which may explain why I understand it without making a great effort.

By the way, the e-a thing where anya becomes enya is not peculiar to Ukwuani. In the southeast, the Nsukka people, Ezza-Izi-Ikwo people, the Afikpo people, basically everyone on the northern and northeastern frontier of Igboland, say enya for anya, esaa for asaa, etc.

Er... I' be doing some studies that might require me getting a little more knowledge of the Ukwuani tongue. I hope you do not mind terribly if I make you my go-to person. cheesy
