No. From the little I know, the Benin Kingdom ruled over many different ethnic groups, including some Igbo groups. These Igbo groups migrated eastwards to areas in what is now known as Delta and Anambra State- maybe Rivers State too but I'm not sure on that one. I don't believe that the Igbos have always dwelled in their present locations.

I don't have much proof outside of oral traditions as I haven't actually done much research on the topic- I don't like to pretend that I'm well versed in something when I'm not.

Btw, what do you mean by "Benin people"- are you referring to the people who lived under the Benin Empire or just the Edoid people?

Ur theory is wrong.

U need to put a timeline on the Benin Kingdom, it is not that old. It is rather very recent.

Secondly, is it easier for ur ancestors to cross river Niger to Anambra or walk from Akwa to Anambra?

Do u know how big the River Niger is?

Thirdly, do u know the location of Benin? Google map is ur friend.(Ondo state border to Anambra is a very long distance)

It is impossible for Benin to administrate all those groups from that location. If i may ask wat was their mode of transportation?

Fourthly, ur claims indicate that igbo existed in the west as opposed to the east, in otherwords Nri never existed.

The fact that a few people in ur village have bini sounding name is not evidence of Benin rule.

There are rather simple explanation like migration of those individuals and marriage, as u have Benin people with igbo names like Okoro. etc

Benin Kingdom only became powerful after arrival of the Colonialist and their slave raids were not limited to Ika Igbos but also yorubas in Ondo and all the neighbouring tribes.

This event is also similar to that of the Aro, Oyo and Asanti Empire.

Let us leave folk tales and conduct research and write based on works of authority and evidence.

This is the future for Igbo land, we will remove all the igbo girls and replace them with Sudan, Kenya and Uganda dark skinned.

Our kids and women will be the darkest and these guys will leave us alone. Biafra is a card and this is also a card.

People that experienced the Benin Empire and Aro Empire will tell u they owned the whole surrounding areas and were powerful but that is all the white man strength becos wen the white man want to go directly to these communities, that was the end we heard of Benin and Aro.

Go and read up on them.

There's nothing wrong with outsiders admiring Igbo men and women, if anything, we should take it as a compliment. As long as the vast majority of Igbo men marry Igbo women and vice versa and do their best to maintain the culture then I don't see what the problem is.

I agree. This will go a long way to building the bridges between the Western Igbos and their Eastern brethren. Once we've done this, maybe we could also try and canvass for a similar arrangement for the Igbos in Rivers State, excluding the Ikwerre.
I feel its OK to leave Rivers just the way it is...the only I'd suggest we do about rivers is to retrieve those areas carved into the state in 1976 and this implies the loss of oyigbo, ogba/egbema/ndoni, opobo and andoni LGs with the first two going to Abia and Imo and the last two going to akwa ibom state.
As long as we're in Nigeria, these insults would continue undecided

Or may be life started in West Africa? Then migrated to South Africa?

Let us face it, Onitsha is as much Benin, as Ile Ife is Benin.

One minute Benin Prince is wondering to Ife in Osun, the next minute Osun prince is wondering to Benin or is it Oyo(Ibadan) prince. I have added a map for the distance and reality of that journey to be clear.

Then Benin is wondering to Onitsha. Benin just got up from their location and started speaking igbo and crossing rivers to Onitsha. grin

One thing that gives me joy is the simple fact that Onitsha and Asaba speak heavy igbo.

Is their any amount of Benin history manipulation that will cause them to start speaking Benin? I think not, hence the devil fights in vain.

The second aspect is their culture, it is fully igbo, they observe the Odinani. These cultural beliefs and religious practices, were gained from the Nri Kingdom. U cannot be igbo without following them and they still do till this day.

Wen they drop all this and their igbo names then Bornstunner would have made gains rather than just ranting and deceiving some people.

Beco u deceive some dont think all are deceived.

Even in Anioma there, ur theory will be thrown out, just as the Benin slave raiders were defeated and thrown out during the Anioma and Benin War.

Ndi Anambra will never entertain ur Benin ideas and any Obi that dares us will die. I dont mind losing my life to kill that person.

Bros am sorry but this your assertion is silly. The urhobo, isoko, ijaw, itsekiri and all other tribes in delta don't speak Benin language but they don't deny the fact that they all came from Benin kingdom. The evidence is there, same way the evidence that igbos came out from the Benin kingdom. The Benin empire was vast with different people speaking different languages but they were all under the Benin kingdom. It was as a result of war that made several people to migrate from Benin down to delta State, down to anambra etc.

U know the truth?

This is the last arguement between Ooni of Ife and Oba of Benin.

It highlights alot of things. It shows the level of confusion that exist between the yorubas and benin.

Nigeria: Benin Kingdom in Edo Is Yoruba Territory - Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Tuesday said Benin Kingdom in Edo State remained part of the expansive Yoruba race, a pronouncement that may spark fresh rivalry and altercation between people of the two ancient kingdoms.

The monarch made the comment in reaction to a statement credited to the palace of the Oba of Benin challenging the claim by the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, that the Ooni of Ife remained the pre-eminent spiritual leader in Yorubaland and environs.

Oba Ogunwusi, via a statement by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, made available to PREMIUM TIMES, said he was not interested in any supremacy battle with anyone but that he would continue to put the records straight and avoid distortion of history from any quarters.

The monarch said going by historical evidence detailing the Oduduwa lineage, Benin Kingdom remained part and parcel of Oduduwa House.

"We in Oduduwa land have always seen and regarded our people in Benin kingdom as part and parcel of Oduduwa House. They are our brothers and sisters, coupled with historical facts to back up this position," Ooni Ogunwusi said.

"The statement credited to the Alake of Egbaland, did not emanate from us but the reality is that as a highly experienced and well informed monarch, Kabiyesi Alake, who is a bonafide Oodua descendant is entitled to his opinion based on his knowledge and understanding of history," the Ooni said.

"Let me emphasize for the umpteenth time that Kabiyesi Ooni is less concerned over any supremacy hullabaloo. He is only interest for now in how the sacred throne of Oduduwa can explore measures through which the collective interest and genuine unity among Yoruba and other tribes within the larger House of Oduduwa can be enhanced.

"This informed his resolve to build bridges of harmony among Yourba Obas. I am resolutely committed to how Yoruba ethnic group can restore its glory and pride of position among other ethnic inclinations in Nigeria and don't want to be dragged into supremacy contest or join issues with anybody."

The traditional ruler said he recalled that about six years ago, attempt was made by some people to upturn history during the launch of a book titled: I REMAIN SIR, YOUR OBEDIENT SERVANT, which he said stood historical facts on its head.

Oba Ogunwusi stated that If the position espoused by the Oba of Benin Palace in the media "is aimed at distancing our people in Benin from the South West and Yoruba, so be it."

He however added, "We still identify with them as our kinsmen, regardless of the attempt to change the course of history."

The Alake had, while hosting the Oba Ogunwusi in his palace on February 7, rated the Ooni as the number one monarch in Yorubaland and other territories considered part of the Oduduwa House.

In his rating, Oba Gbadebo said Oba Ogunwusi was number one of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland, followed by the Alaafin of Oyo, then by the Oba of Benin (in third position), the Alake of Egbaland (fourth) and the Awujale of Ijebuland (fifth).

But in a swift reaction on Tuesday, the Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of the Kingdom, David Edebiri, rejected the ranking, saying the Ooni of Ife was a son of the Oba of Benin and that the Oba of Benin stool has no relationship with the Yoruba race.

The Esogban said, "We wanted to discard this report as something that was not necessary at all. We do not see how the Alake of Egbaland suddenly woke up to think that the Oba of Benin is also a Yoruba Oba.

"There is no basis for such classification; Oba of Benin has nothing to do with the Yoruba Obas. It is simply unnecessary, unless they simply want to stir up an unnecessary controversy.

"We are not in Yorubaland. To be frank, it is because many of them are not willing to come up with the truth, the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy; it is not part of their title from time immemorial.

"For instance, the one they call the Oba of Lagos, these are recent adaptations. In the 50s, there was no Oba of Lagos, what we had was the Eleko of Eko. That is the title of the King there. In Ibadan, you have the Olu Ibadan. You come to Abeokuta, you have the Alake of Egba land. You come to Oyo, you have the Alaafin of Oyo. In Ilesha, you have the Owa-Obokun of IIesha. So no Yoruba monarch had as part of his titles the word Oba except the Oba of Benin.

"That word Oba is indigenous to Benin. It is only in recent times you find everybody bearing Oba. When the Western Regional conference of traditional rulers took place in Benin City in 1942, go and check the attendance, there was no other monarch in the whole of the Western Region then that bore the title of Oba, except the Oba of Benin.

"So it is an unnecessary excursion, an unnecessary attempt to turn history upside down by the Alake by classifying the Oba of Benin as third in the hierarchy of kings.

"Our own traditional history says that the Ooni of Ife was a Benin Prince who wandered from here to Ife, settled there and became the ruler there. That is the position, if they don't know, they should send people here; we will teach them.

"We will show them landmarks. So this is unnecessary misrepresentation of history. Maybe the Alake wanted to mention a different place and not Benin.

"The monarchical rulership in this part of the world started from Benin during the era of the Ogisos. It was the son of the last Ogiso, Owodo, that wandered from here to Ife and he became a ruler there, carrying everything about the Benin monarchical system to that place. There is no basis for such classification.

"The Ooni of Ife, by historical facts, is a son of the Oba of Benin, so they are not in the same class. The Oba of Benin is the only one that answers Oba, the rest don't. But today, we hear Oba here and there, they are all recent adaptations. I am saying categorically that the word Oba is indigenous to Benin and not to Yoruba nation."

We are completely different and that is evident. I have explained my position on Anioma igbo and how they got there.

Benin are Portugese and British slave raiders that were defeated by the Anioma igbo in the Benin/Anioma War. They were further defeated by the British and relegated to the realm of Oduduwa Kingdom where dey belong.

THE BENIN SLAVE RAIDERS FOR A BRIEF MOMENT HELD CERTAIN COMMUNITY TO RANSOM DURING THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE BUT WERE SOON REPEALED.

IF THOSE COMMUNITIES THINK THAT MEANS BEING UNDER BENIN RULE OR ORIGINATING FROM BENIN, I PUT IT DOWN TO LACK OF PROPER EDUCATION.
