Mr Zion there is absolutely nothing wrong in returning an envelope empty!!
Let me tell you why churches now use envelopes.. (Note: I don't agree with their reasons)
1. To conceal the amount given. I.e so you wouldn't feel inferior if you are giving a low amount or if you aren't giving anything at all.. Many churches warn you not to even take the envelopes home.

2. In some churches, some people give their offerings for specific purposes.. So they address the reason why they are giving in the envelopes.

So Mr Zion , nothing is wrong in giving an empty envelope..
For me, I don't even need envelops to give an offering, i place it without an envelope into the offering basket. I prefer if people pass the offering basket without putting any envelop, but its not wrong if that envelop is empty..

It's a very strong temptation that I have had to overcome. I either go out or dance where I am standing. It is better to fear and honour God that way instead of dropping an empty envelope into the offering basket.
Again, it happened today in church, I was to be among people to lead others for an impromptu thanksgiving, I don't have offering, so while the ushers are giving out envelopes, I did not take, that did not stop me from dancing and singing to the front and going aside for those with envelope to put into the offering basket.
If it bothers anyone, they should use the opportunity to sow into my life.
If the Holy Spirit convicts you, ask God for forgiveness and move on.

WHAT TRIGGERED THE MARTIN LUTHER
REFORMATION?

Here is the story, and why I think the Church is
back to where it was before the Martin Luther
Reformation exactly 500 years ago.

Before 1517, everyone belonged to the Roman catholic Church which was the official religion, with the Pope as the head. The Pope had the final say on all issues concerning religion.

Pope Leo X wanted to build a fanciful Church
building called St. Peters Basilica in Rome. The
building was going to cost him so much. Hence,
he decided to raise money from the sale of
indulgences from purgatory.

Purgatory was invented by the Catholic Pope
during the Crusades in order to get more men
into the army. The pope claimed he could buy
souls back from hell. His soldiers believed him
and the practice continued.

The manipulation of the people through the
sale of indulgences from purgatory(Offering God
money in order to get God's favor) infuriated
Martin Luther. The same idea of indulgences and
purgatory was why MANDATORY TITHES and
offerings got established in the early Church.
'God gets excited at the sound of coins in the
offering plate'.

On Oct. 31st, 1517, a Roman Catholic Monk
named Martin Luther posted 95 Theses on the
door of the Church claiming salvation was by
faith alone, among others. He claimed the Pope
had no power to forgive sins or collect
indulgences from purgatory.
His 5 pillars were, 1) sola fide( faith alone), 2)
sola scriptura (by scriptures alone), 3) solus
Christus (through Christ alone), 4)sola gratia (by
grace alone), 5)soli deo gloria (for God's glory
alone)

The posting of the theses happened at the
early beginnings of the invention of the print
media, just like today's internet. Within weeks,
Luther's theses was widespread all over
Germany, and all over Europe within months.

Before that, nobody had challenged the
authority of the Church or Pope and lived. The
Church had killed all scientists, historians or
anyone who had a contrary view to the Pope.
Often burning them publicly or beheading them.

Hence, the posting of the Theses was like
Martin Luther posting his own death notice.

My understanding of the envelope offering culture is that it is there to prevent people from the pressure of on-lookers who will see what the next man is giving. I got this from Bishop Oyedepo's mouth directly.

The envelope is used to encourage people to give higher amounts. Putting 20 naira in an envelope just doesn't feel right. It demands more.

The dancing-to-the-front-of-the-pastor culture, which is a different thing, is meant to prevent people from skipping any of the offerings.

Using clever tricks to raise more money for the church is justified in the minds of the people involved because the money is "for God".

if u ask the financial officers of the church, u will know better. In my church we give via Envelope and the reason we do this is for people who don't have. If u don't have, just simply drop the envelop back, and God understands perfectly. Men are men, they will mock u if u don't have to give. They will mock u if ur offering is less than theirs so the need of an envelop came, so that the amount u put into it will be concealed. You committed no sin. I'm sure if u have, u will put money into it.
