Yesterday i got into a heated debate with an acquaintance. He was of the opinion that listening to secular music and movies is bad for a christian. I on the other hand was countering him. Although i know that there are music or movies especially that one should avoid but i opine that it is not enough to ride all secular music and movies off.

I have learn alot especially from secular movies both as a form of entertainment and
educationally and just because some movies are bad doesn’t mean i should stop watching movies.

As for the music aspect, although i listen to alot of gospel but i also listen to secular from time to time. I told the guy that what about Tasha Cobbs a gospel singer who featured Nicki Minaj in "I'm getting ready" or Jeremiah Gyang featuring M.I. in "Kaunar Na Allah". The songs are great and are still gospel.

The guy argued that they have backslided. They should never associate themselves with secular musicians.

We argued for like an hour until we get tired.

So i will like see your own point of view. Is listening to secular music/movie bad for a Christian?

To the pure all things are pure.. But not all things edify... For quick progress and efficacy.. U ought to cut away unnecessary excesses!.. We are in a race!.. Baggage may not be a sin but its unnecessary and will slow u down..

Between 'gospel' and 'secular' music is a dicey subject: With the kind of music genre and composers in trend now, am forced to asked the question: what actually constitute a gospel music or secular music? In order words, what defines these genre of music?
In answering this crucial question, we can streamline the discussion and also conclude whether a Christian should listen to secular music or not?
However, any serious minded and heavenly-focused child of God must come to that place of maturity to define what is healthy to his/her spiritual growth or advancement. The Holy Spirit helps us in this direction. So let the Holy Spirit tell us which song is imperative and as at what time.

In every music/songs there is a spirit in charge, the spirit in charge inspired the singer of that music and in the inspiration is the anointing of that music.

There are some music/movies you watch that activate lust in you immediately that's the spirit behind it at work.

And there are some music/movies you watch at that very moment you I'll be high in spirit, you feel like worshiping God, praying and evangelising.

So you can differentiate it yourself, some music/movies are sent from the spirit world to corrupt/destroy you as a Christian, beware!!

Deep down in your spirit, you know what's wrong if you have the spirit of God to discern.
I pray you get direction and leading of the Holy spirit.

Well, brother what I must contribute is about the power of the Sub-conscious mind. What you listen to constantly have a strong power to affect your physical life. Whatever the message is contained in the music or movie can affect you indirectly. You may find yourself being indulged I it in thought and your will power towards such either evil or sinful thought will depreciate. If you listen to music that promote illicit sex you may fall into such temptation sooner than you think. If you watch movies with Gay themes you may find yourself being accommodating of such ideas and sympathetic of gay course. But those are created skirmishes. They are subtle ways of getting you, they are "subliminal messages " thus is how whites have sold evils to the blacks without the guns or wars.
They are all means of colonizing the minds of the youth (who will eventually become the fathers and mothers of tomorrow). You can imagine the thoughts of a father who constantly indulge in Pornography.
Why do u see the high rate of sexual misbehaviors? What you see or listen to affects your mind STRONGLY.
Don't forget the word of God says "If your eye be single, your whole body will have light"

Matt.6.22 - The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

Also,

Prov.4.23 - Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Meaning that what you allow into your heart through your EYES & EAR can HURT the LIFE of your HEART.
SO, JUST BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU ALLOW TO ENTERTAIN YOUR HEART.
Your mind through the Word of God is the judge,
not what anyone advises you.

Secular music have different grades, there are some secular music that all they portray is sex, women and unclothedness. That one is bad
Secular music that talks about love and emotions, passing positive messages like that of Cobhams Asuquo, Style -plus of old etc are harmless. I can tell you that it has helped me in a great way.
Gospel music is good but I can’t just be limited to it , some secular music have messages passed across. This my personal opinion though

Don’t be teamed with those who do not love the Lord, for what do the people of God have in common with the people of sin? How can light live with darkness? 15 And what harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a Christian be a partner with one who doesn’t believe? 1

To avoid confusion, we have to define what secular music/movies means and types of secular music/movies.

Secular music is a nonreligious music. But it can contain truth that is found in religion. It can contains evil lyrics too. It can contain the good, the bad and the ugly. So a christian that sing a song that contains bible truth is no doing bad. The bad ones are those that contain the bad and the ugly. But if a Creative christian changes the bad and the ugly to godly lyrics, he is doing well.

When it comes to movies, ur remote control shud come in handy. There are many good secular movies with sex or lustful scenes here and there. When u get to such scene, jump and pass them. Don't fool yourself that u are a man or a woman, that u will marry, that u have married etc. LUST is a sin that will lead u to hell. If u don't have the self control to skip immoral scenes, don't watch secular movies. They will only land u in hell.

A true Christian don't listen to such there are good numbers of gospel music and gospel movies both local and international.

The spirit of God in us will help us identify those not good for us.
