Yesterday i got into a heated debate with an acquaintance. He was of the opinion that listening to secular music and movies is bad for a christian. I on the other hand was countering him. Although i know that there are music or movies especially that one should avoid but i opine that it is not enough to ride all secular music and movies off.

I have learn alot especially from secular movies both as a form of entertainment and educationally and just because some movies are bad doesn’t mean i should stop watching movies.

As for the music aspect, although i listen to alot of gospel but i also listen to secular from time to time. I told the guy that what about Tasha Cobbs a gospel singer who featured Nicki Minaj in "I'm getting ready" or Jeremiah Gyang featuring M.I. in "Kaunar Na Allah". The songs are great and are still gospel.

The guy argued that they have backslided. They should never associate themselves with secular musicians.

We argued for like an hour until we get tired.

So i will like see your own point of view. Is listening to secular music/movie bad for a Christian?

Every song is inspired either by the Holy Spirit or demons.

The Spirit/spirit behind every song follows the song as a vehicle through which to increase His/it's host or vessel. The spiritual controls the physical.

It's difficult to quit listening to secular songs if one is addicted. So ask God to help you as you make efforts to start replacing them with songs inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Before Jesus Christ saved my soul, I used to love and listen to secular music. However, immediately I was saved, secular music and videos became irritating to me. I threw away cos of all the secular artists I had. It was just natural and no one told me to do it.
Secular music which glorifies the flesh can not appeal to a Christain that lives in the spirit. Never!

I can relate...I will never forget as a choirister, how back then, I was flooding myself with Gospel, hip hop, Reggae, R&B and, Makossa, afterall they don't mix or so I thought. This was my medley, to the extent where, one day, during my leading worship, we reached a Praise break ( the part, you want the people to break in a dance/shout etc) and I loudly blurted out unconsciously the word "Awilo Longomba" - it was not funny. Apparently what a bird eats - it shuts...

Dependent on your stage of Christian maturity - Yes, it will affect you and you must control it.You see, in our walk here, spirit is everything. The movie, the music we encounter has a spirit, is fluid, looking for a soul/body to inhabit in order to give it life, enable its expression and, transmission.

When we listen or watch, there is an imprint on the mind no matter how small, or conscious we are of it. If it's music, you either register the beat, the lyrics, the arrangement or its visuals and where is that? In and on your mind. If it's a movie, it's a character, a scene, a quote, the progression of events and eventually, your mind is aware of it, forming an impression and eventually your opinion and attitude.

To identify if it is good for you or not,you would an awareness not only of what you re watching or listening to, but also a questioning of what subliminal (innuendos and not so obvious) messages being passed. A typical example is action movies - where Guns are used arbitrarily like it is the culture in America, where it is far from the truth. Such awareness only comes with the Holy Spirit and maturity. If one is immature, one takes it as is (just a movie), for someone woke (for lack of a better word) you are aware not only of its direct but also indirect messages ( that handsome gay guy who has it all together, that lesbian politician who talks so eloquently representing her community, that teenager who is jerking off and is caught and is quickly excused, that girl who is deemed slow cause she does not drink/having sex etc.)

Secular music have different grades, there are some secular music that all they portray is sex, women and unclothedness. That one is bad
Secular music that talks about love and emotions, passing positive messages like that of Cobhams Asuquo, Style -plus of old etc are harmless. I can tell you that it has helped me in a great way.

Well, brother what I must contribute is about the power of the Sub-conscious mind. What you listen to constantly have a strong power to affect your physical life. Whatever the message is contained in the music or movie can affect you indirectly. You may find yourself being indulged I it in thought and your will power towards such either evil or sinful thought will depreciate. Unmarried people want to practice it too. Today u see married women dressed like harlots. U see them kissing in public in the name of romance. Cohabitating, fornication, party, strip clubs etc. And they will use the Songs of Solomon as an excuse.

It's not bad listening to wholesome secular music. Some secular songs carry a positive message and do not talk about sex, gang activity or violence. You can listen to them but don't be carried away by them. Always remember to listen to Christian tunes too to help you stay on track with God
