HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL
WELCOME TO 2022

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* SATURDAY, 1ST JANUARY, 2022 _*(Naming and Circumcision of Christ)*_
*THEME:* HIS NAME IS JESUS
*BIBLE PASSAGE:* LUKE 2: 15-21 *(NIV)*

15. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

17. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,

18. And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

19. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

20. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21. On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

*INTRODUCTION*
Happy New Year! God has graciously and purposefully brought us thus far - He is good and faithful indeed. We thank Him also for Jesus' birth, which is arrival of peace on earth. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem while His parents were trying to fulfil their civic duty to the government of the day symbolises something special. It is special in the sense that Jesus came as the face of salvation in human form. In order to carry along the humans for whom He came, the Angel of the Lord came upon some shepherds who were keeping watch over their flock by night and announced to them that God had conquered fear.

With the strong belief and acceptance of this good news, these shepherds who were supposed to be looking after their flocks, left everything they ought to be doing to step out of their comfort zone, simply as an act of conquering fear bearing in mind that the information from the angel was far too more important than every other thing. Their statement of faith in the good news is found in their confirmation of the angel's shared information. Note that these shepherds became the first evangelists who went about sharing what they heard and saw about the newly born Jesus. Jesus' mother, Mary, on the other hand, like most mothers, kept faith with what transpired between her and the angel of the Lord concerning Jesus' name, which came before His birth.

*Prayer:*
Dear Lord, we believe You can take care of our cares. Help us to build stronger faith in You this year in Jesus' Name. *Amen.*

*DATE:* SUNDAY, 2ND JANUARY, 2022 _*(Second Sunday After Christmas)*_ *THEME:* TELL YOUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS ABOUT THE SAVIOUR
*TEXT:* JOHN 1:35 - 42

*BIBLE READING:*
35. The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37. When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

38. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” _(which means “Teacher”),_ “where are you staying?”

39. “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.

41. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” _(that is, the Christ)._

42. And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” _(which, when translated, is Peter)._

*Introduction:*
John the Baptist introduced Jesus as the Lamb of God, to his followers. Andrew presented him to his brother Peter as the Messiah. There is a need for every believer to share the gospel of Christ with his or her families and friends. Once men are introduced to Jesus, the ground is watered for their conviction by the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist presented Him as the Lamb of God, meaning the one God Himself will use as sacrifice; no wonder his two disciples wanted to hear from the horse's month. Andrew called Him the Messiah.

It is your turn to present Him to your neighbours, families and friends. When you tell people about Christ, the Holy Spirit will take it as a platform to do great work in the hearts of your hearers.

*Prayer:*
Lord, please, reveal yourself more and more to me. *Amen.*

*DATE:* MONDAY, 3RD JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* SHARE YOUR TESTIMONIES
*TEXT:* JOHN 1: 43 - 51

*BIBLE READING:*

43. The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”

44. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.

45. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46. “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

48. “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49. Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”

50. Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

51. He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”

*INTRODUCTION*
The testimony of Philip concerning Jesus was what was inquired to introduce Nathaniel to the author of life. How often have we shared our testimonies of Christ among family and friends? Notice show of doubt in Nathaniel (v.46): "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" The world has found it difficult to believe that the author of life could have such a poor beginning and die such a shameful death. Notice that Philip did not argue with Nathaniel when he doubted but only said in him "Come and See!"

At times, we engage in arguments and reasoning in trying to convince sinners, but it is unnecessary, because the message of the Cross does not make sense to the natural mind; however, it is still the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1: 16). Our commitment to witnessing is all that God needs to draw the unsaved to Himself, Always share your testimonies.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, help to share your goodness to me and with everyone. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 4TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* THE LORD HONOURED A WEDDING INVITATION
*TEXT:* JOHN 2: 1-12

*BIBLE READING:*
1. On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

2. And Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

3. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4. “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5. His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6. Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so,

9. And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

10. And said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

*MESSAGE:*
One thing that should gladden our hearts is that Jesus Christ, though God, was not too spiritual to participate in man's everyday experience, whether it is a wedding feast which gives us pleasure, a funeral which gives us pain, a sport by which we are entertained, an occupation by which we earn a living, or a course of study in which we are involved, Jesus Christ is interested in everything and everyday experience. Bringing the Lord into every aspect of our lives is very crucial and commendable. Neglecting to invite Jesus into common or ordinary things of our lives has the same consequences as driving Him away from partaking in our everyday experiences (Matt. 8: 28-34).

Allow the Lord to be in absolute control of all situations in your life: "Whatever He tells you to do, do it" (v.5). He is the Lord. It is only when you invite Him to your situation and do His bidding that He turns that situation around for your blessing and for the glory of His name (Matt. 10:29-31; 1 Pet. 5: 7)

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, please help me to remember that every aspect of my life matters to You and that I must allow You have the final say. *Amen.*

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 5TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* THE ZEAL FOR MY FATHER'S HOUSE
*TEXT:* JOHN 2: 13-25

*BIBLE READING:*

13. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

15. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

16. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”

17. His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18. The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

19. Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

20. They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”

21. But the temple he had spoken of was his body.

22. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23. Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.

24. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.

25. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.

*MESSAGE:*
The Jews who came to make sacrifices in the temple had come from distant lands (Acts 2:5 - 11). The currencies of their different countries needed to be changed to Jewish money; and also, they needed to buy sheep, cattle, and doves (v.14) for their sacrifices. The traders whom Jesus Christ drove out were rendering services with their foreign exchange businesses and the sale of animals for sacrifices. Jesus Christ drove them out for turning the court of the gentiles, the only space allocated to Gentile's worshippers (John 12: 20) into their marketplace. And to make matters worse, they did not do clean business (Matt. 21:13): They shortchanged the unsuspecting foreigners. It tells how some of our actions may have good beginnings and intentions, but economic considerations may become our priority later.

Consider fund-raising in our churches today and the way we manipulate members to give more and more. How can we ensure we do not turn God's house into a marketplace or a den of robbers? How do we react to practices we consider unbiblical in the church: Quit and start a new congregation? Or, worse still, abandon church altogether? Notice Jesus' reaction (v.15) and his reason (v.17). Zeal for our father's house from within should drive us to righteous action. We need discernment and wisdom as well as knowledge of the authority we have. Doing the right thing in the wrong place or in the wrong manner can make Jesus angry with us. Can you think of other examples? Check your own life!

*PRAYER:*
Deliver me, Lord, from serving mammon or allowing it to take over decency and decorum from my life. _*Amen.*_

*_John Testifies About Jesus_*
29. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30. This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

31. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.

32. Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.

33. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

34. I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

*MESSAGE:*
John the Baptist presented Jesus as the Promised Messiah. John understood the messianic role that Jesus would play for the redemption of humankind. He therefore announced that Jesus was the Lamb of God, the Saviour of the world. Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. Jesus is the offering for sacrifice provided by God for redemption. In the Old Testament, the Jews were taught to offer sacrifices for almost every aspect of life for the atonement of their sins. Sacrificial animals included pigeons, lamb, etc. When animals are sacrificed, the blood was thought to have a special effect in appeasing God as a sweet-smelling savour (Lev. 2: 9). Furthermore, when a lamb is used, it is usually without blemish - an offering for sacrifice provided by God for man's salvation.

Today, we don't offer sacrifices again, because we believe that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice in dying for us; and His blood was shed as atonement for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). We must appropriate this sacrificial work through faith by believing in the Saviour of the world.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, I acknowledge you as the hope of the Gentiles and the Saviour of the world. Please take away my sins and make me a new creature in Jesus' Name. _*Amen.*_

*THEME:* GOD'S LOVE FOR HIS CHILDREN
*TEXT:* JOHN 3: 1-end

*BIBLE READING:*

1. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
2. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
3. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4. Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
5. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
6. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
8. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
9. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.
10. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
11. For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
12. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.
13. Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[b] if the world hates you.
14. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
15. Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
18. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19. This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:
20. If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
21. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God
22. And receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.
23. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
24. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

*MESSAGE:*
Apostle John affirms that believers' self-worth is based on the fact that God loves us and therefore calls us His children. When we accept Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour, and receive the salvation which He offers, we become God's children. Being aware that we are now His children gives us joy, peace and confidence. The essence of being a believer is to please God. When we believe in Christ and love one another, Christ will be seen in whatever we do.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Father, please, increase my knowledge and understanding as well as growth and grace to love more. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* SATURDAY, 8TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* GOD WANTS US TO LIVE A LIFE FULL OF LOVE
*TEXT:* 1 JOHN 4: 7-21

*BIBLE PASSAGE:*
7. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

8. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

9. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

10. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

11. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

12. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

13. This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

14. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

15. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.

16. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

17. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.

18. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

19. We love because he first loved us.

20. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

21. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

*MESSAGE:*
Do you know that God loves you? If you do, do you really believe it? The beloved disciple, John, who wrote this knew the love of God and believed it. This gave Him tremendous strength through all the trials he experienced. The knowledge of God's love ought to give us strength and grace to survive the world with its troubles. God is at work through the believers experiences. You cannot be defeated because of God's love. God is love. Everything about God is filled with love. Heaven is full of love and so is the earth, as far as the children of men will live in obedience to Christ's teaching. God wants us to live a life of love too. Love is the greatest of all (1 Corinthians 13).

The whole commandments are summarised in one word: 'LOVE.' Love God and love your neighbour (Mark 12:28-31). If there is love, there will be no corrupt people, murderers, suicide bombers, adulterers, thieves and robbers, kidnappers, etc. Do you live a life of love? If you are a believer, this is the parameter with which to gauge your spirituality. If you are yet to appropriate the love of God in your life, open your heart by faith and ask Jesus Christ to come into your life.

*PRAYER:*
Thank you Lord for your love for me despite everything I am passing through now. Help me Holy Spirit to live a life of love, in Jesus' Name. *Amen.*

*THEME:* THE ANOINTING OF DAVID
*TEXT:* 1 SAMUEL 16: 1-3, 13

*BIBLE READING* :

1. The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2. But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

3. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

13. So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

*MESSAGE:*
"Fill your horn with oil," - Fine olive oil, carried in a ram's horn, was useful for anointing a new king (1 Sam. 10:1; 1 Kings 1:39). Each king and high priest of Israel was anointed with oil. It was used to set people or objects apart for God's service. The anointing oil poured over David's head stood for holiness and consecration. This commissioned him as God's representative to the nation of Israel. God appointed and equipped David for his responsibilities as the new King of Israel. God also rejected Saul's kingship, although he paraded himself as the king until his death. David was anointed to fulfil God's purpose. It was divine initiative, not man's desire.

Samuel obeyed the divine mandate to anoint David as Israel's next king - David did not lobby to become a king. He did not struggle to get it. He did not overthrow Saul to become a king in Israel. God gave the throne to David, a man after God's heart. The anointing upon his head and God's approval upon his life made him prevail. On the other hand, Saul was disobedient to God. He disappointed God who appointed him and the Lord abandoned him. God therefore replaced the disobedient king Saul with David, a man after His heart.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, anoint me with the power of the Holy Spirit and prepare me to serve you faithfully and diligently. *Amen.*

*DATE:* MONDAY, 10TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* GOD HAS GIVEN US ETERNAL LIFE IN CHRIST
*TEXT:* 1 JOHN 5: 1-12

*BIBLE READING:*

1. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.

2. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.

3. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

4. For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

5. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

6. This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

7. For there are three that testify:

8. The Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

9. We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.

10. Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.

11. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

*MESSAGE:*
We are to appreciate and believe what God had done in Christ and that Christ is born of God. Anyone who loves God ought to love Christ too, who in love for humankind, relinquished His position in heaven and came down to this world to die for humanity (John 3:16). Thus, verses 2 and 3, insist that if believers love God and Christ, they should equally love one another. It is our obligation to love as Jesus taught in John 13:34,35. The love that is being emphasised here is what Greeks called 'Agape.' This is a sacrificial love which gives out to satisfy others, not minding the cost. Through this love, true believers are compelled to willingly obey all the commandments of God.

The believers' victory is emphasised in verses 4 & 5. _"For whosoever is born of God overcomes the world."_ This means that he who is born of God is born for God to live victoriously over the world. It is abundantly clear that faith in Christ is the seed for this victory. When anyone is born again, Christ indwells and empowers him or her to become a child of God and to overcome sin, flesh and the world. In verses 6 to 9, we see that having thus acquired the power to become an overcomer, a child of God should now live by and exercise his faith in the Lord Jesus (v.7). Thus, verses 10 to 12, talk about the witness and record of God which are greater than that of man. God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. Anyone that desires eternal life must accept Jesus. You cannot have eternal life without Jesus.

*PRAYER:*
Lord Jesus, thank you for granting me eternal life through Your death and resurrection. Please, come into my heart; sanctify me and make me Your child indeed. *Amen.*

✝ *DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL OF 11TH JANUARY, 2022*

✝ TOPIC: MAINTAINING UNITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

✝TEXT: 1 Corinthians 1:1-17

1. Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—

6 God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.

12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas[b]”; still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name.

16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

✝ STUDY

The concept of unity appears early in the scriptures. In Genesis 1:26, we read, "And God said, 'let us make man in our image." This shows that unity is important to God. One can understand why it appears that Paul was in a hurry to talk about it, denouncing disunity in the strongest terms, and making a strong case for unity, among the Corinthian Church of his day.
The question, "Is Christ divided?" continues to beg for answers, even more in our time. Doctrinal matters have so divided the Body of Christ that the multiplicity of denominations within Christendom is at the highest. S.J. Stone put it succinctly in his Hymn, A&M255, "With scornful wonder men see her sore opprest, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distrest." Paul enjoins the Corinthian Church to shun all forms of divisions and maintain the same unity as found in the Godhead, who called them "unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (v.9). God Himself also testified to the efficacy of unity in Genesis 11:6.

✝Prayer: May the love of God reign supreme in my heart, and may I receive the grace to pursue peace and unity among the brethren. Amen.

✝ *DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL OF 12TH JANUARY, 2022*

✝ TOPIC: THE LIMITATION OF MAN'S WISDOM

✝TEXT: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

19 For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are,
29 so that no one may boast before him.
30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.

✝ STUDY

Over the centuries, human beings have been in the quest to find out the origin of life, which resulted in the "Theory of evolution." They tried to explain how man evolved from inanimate to the animate and from the lowest of tiny living beings to human beings.

Indeed, that exposed the foolishness of man as he tried to exclude God from creation. Who has witnessed such evolution till date? And because human wisdom cannot explain the existence of God, faith comes in (Hebrews 11:6). It is by that faith that we equally know that the worlds were created by the word of God (Hebrews 11:3).

As men struggle vainly to build self-righteousness through human effort, we learn here that it is only through acts of believing (exercising faith in Jesus and His finished work) that we attain the righteousness of God and acquire life, just like those who believed in the brazen serpent made by Moses survived (John 3:14&15). Here lies a great miracle; that man is saved by merely believing the message of salvation which he fails to attain through personal labour and human wisdom. The wisdom that comes from God leads us to believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead while confessing with our mouth that "Jesus is Lord" (Rom. 10:9).

✝Prayer: Lord, grant us the wisdom that will help us to truly confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that you raised Him from the dead.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 13TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* WISDOM OF GOD *TEXT:* 1 CORINTHIANS 2: 1-end

*BIBLE READING:*
1. And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.

2. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
3. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.
4. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,
5. So that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

_*God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit*_
6. We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
7. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
8. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9. However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

10. these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
11. For who knows a person's thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
12. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
13. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.
14. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
15. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments,
16. for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”

But we have the mind of Christ.

*MESSAGE:*
There is a wide gap of difference between the wisdom of God and the wisdom of man. The wisdom of man oftentimes is embedded in big or lofty words and great learning. According to Paul, "my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power, that might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God (vv. 4-5). God's work must be done in God's own way, to achieve God's own desired result. Every child of God must seek God's wisdom in every area of his or her life.

Servants of God must refrain from the temptation of preaching to please men, rather our preaching should be to present Christ to the world; and this is the wisdom of God. Paul in 1 Corinthians 1: 22-23, says _"For the Jews demand signs and Greek seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles."_ The wisdom of God may sound too simple, uncivilized, and not in line with the current trends, yet the power is made manifest through it. Some ministers in search of flamboyant and sophisticated ministry, have ended up departing from the way of the truth. The wisdom of God is the way of the truth and it is also the power of God. Every believer should live by this wisdom.

*PRAYER:*
Deliver me, O Lord, from the operations of the wisdom of men and lead me by Your own wisdom in Jesus' name. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* FRIDAY, 14TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* BUILDING CORRECTLY *TEXT:* 1 CORINTHIANS 3: 1-23

*BIBLE READING:*

1. Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
2. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
3. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?
4. For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?
5. What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task.
6. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
7. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
8. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.
9. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
10. By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.
11. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
13. Their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
14. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
15. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
16. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
17. If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
18. Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.
19. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”;
20. And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”
21. So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours,
22. Whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours,
23. And you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.

*MESSAGE:*
Here, Paul addressed the issue of worldliness that was found in the Corinthian Church (vv. 3,4). He called this by its right name - worldliness! Today, some of our churches are still worldly. We witness division in our churches. Building correctly involves both the quality of materials for the building (v.12) and how we build (w. 9b,10; 2 Timothy 2:20,22). The materials mentioned in verse 12 that could be used to build on the foundation that has already been laid speak of varying qualities (v.13).

We are saved to do good works. With this in mind, we should learn how to engage in ministry without any ulterior motive. Compare their purpose in ministry with what obtains in our churches today. When our purpose for ministry is wrong, worldliness will definitely thrive in our ministry and this will affect the Body of Christ. May God help us to understand the correct perspective of ministry so that we can build correctly.

*PRAYER:*
Give me the wisdom and right attitude to build acceptably for You, dear Lord. *Amen.*

✝TOPIC: SERVANTS OF CHRIST

✝TEXT: 1 Corinthians 4:1-21

1. This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed.
2. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.
3. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
4. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.
5. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.
6. Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.
7. For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
8. Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you!
9. For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings.
10. We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored!
11. To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.
12. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;
13. when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.
14. I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children.
15. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.
16. Therefore I urge you to imitate me.
17. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
18. Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you.
19. But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have.
20. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.
21. What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

✝ STUDY

Apostles are servants of the Lord and both Paul and Apollos have been assigned positions as servants by the Lord. In a series of well-constructed metaphors, Paul portrays himself and Apollos as farm workers, construction labourers, and household stewards, in order to emphasise collegiality against partnership, and to diminish the importance attributed to (hem. Paul urged the Corinthians to think of him, Peter, and Apollos, as more servants of Christ entrusted with the secret things of God (1 Cor. 2:7).

A servant does what his master tells him to do. We must do what God tells to us to do in his Word and through his Holy Spirit. Each day God presents us with needs and opportunities that challenge us to do what we know is right. How easy it is for us to become attached to a spiritual leader. When someone has helped us, it is natural to feel loyalty; but Paul warns iitfnin.sl having such pride in our favourite leaders that we cause divisions in the church.

Any true spiritual leader is a representative of Christ and has (nothing to offer that God hasn't given him or her. Do not let your loyalty cause strife, slander, or broken relationships. Make sure that your deepest loyal lies arc to Christ and not to his human agents. Those who spend more time in debating
church leadership than in declaring Christ's message don’ t have the mind of Christ.

✝Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me grace to show Christ to the world by being an example of a true believer. Amen.

*MESSAGE:*
Here, we find Jesus engaging Philip. The simple but effective message to Philip was _"follow me!"_ It was in following Jesus without doubts that Philip "found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets wrote - Jesus of Nazareth."

Today, that invitation still rings out to us as Christ invites us to "follow" Him. To follow Him is to believe in Him, to love Him, to accept His Lordship, to keep His commandments (John 14:15-21). To follow Him is to know Him as the Christ, the Messiah and know Him (God) who sent Him (John 17:3). It is the most important invitation in life which will enable us at the end to get to heaven where He is as He promised (John 12:26). Please, follow the Lord.

*PRAYER:*
Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to follow Christ daily. _*Amen.*_

1. Woe to you who are complacent in Zion,
and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria,
you notable men of the foremost nation,
to whom the people of Israel come!

2. Go to Kalneh and look at it;
go from there to great Hamath,
and then go down to Gath in Philistia.
Are they better off than your two kingdoms?
Is their land larger than yours?

3 You put off the day of disaster
and bring near a reign of terror.

4. You lie on beds adorned with ivory
and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.

5. You strum away on your harps like David
and improvise on musical instruments.

6. You drink wine by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

7. Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
your feasting and lounging will end.

_*The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel*_
8. The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself—the Lord God Almighty declares:

“Iabhor the pride of Jacob
and detest his fortresses;
I will deliver up the city

9. If ten people are left in one house, they too will die.

10. And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”

11. For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash the great house into pieces
and the small house into bits.

12. Do horses run on the rocky crags?
Does one plow the sea with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison
and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—
13. You who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar
and say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”

14. For the Lord God Almighty declares,
“I will stir up a nation against you, Israel,
that will oppress you all the way
from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”

*MESSAGE:*
Great cities to the east, north, and west have been destroyed because of pride and selfishness. What happened to them would happen to Israel because Israel's sin was just as great as theirs. Prophet Amos targets the elite of the capitals of both Judah (Zion, Jerusalem) and Israel (Mount Samaria). Thus, Calneh and Hamath were prosperous cities of Syria, captured by the Assyrians in 738 BC. Amos directed his attack at those living in complacency and luxury in both Israel and Judah.

Great wealth and comfortable lifestyles may make people think they are secure, but God is not pleased if we isolate ourselves from others' needs. God wants us to care for others as he cares for us. His Kingdom has no place for selfishness or indifference. We must learn to put the needs of others before our wants. Using our wealth to help others is one way to guard against pride and complacency. The people had built luxurious homes to flaunt their achievements but while it is not wrong to live in comfortable houses, we must not let them become sources of inflated pride and self-glorification. God gave our homes to us, and they are to be used for service, not just for show.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, please, gives me grace to learn to put the needs of others before mine. _*Amen.*_

12. That they may possess the remnant of Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by My name," Says the LORD who does this thing.
13. " Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow [with it.]
14. I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit [them;] They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
15. I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them," Says the LORD your God.

✝STUDY

The Lord had declared that if hands join together, sinners will never go unpunished. He made it clear that when the punishment comes, every sinner must receive it wherever he or she may hide. God's judgement on evil doers will be dreadful because God's eyes are set upon them for judgement and not for good. It is regrettable that many people have forgotten the Almighty God who has given them life, cities, food and divine protection. They mock the Lord God by taking His name and His word in vain. God declared that all the sinners shall perish; but promised to restore and establish those who fear Him.

Our God has no pleasure in the death of a sinner, but that he shall repent, forsake his evil ways and come back to Him. This is the reason for sending His Son Jesus Christ to come and die in our stead. If you repent of all your sins and receive Jesus Christ into your life as Lord and Saviour, you will neither die nor perish, but shall have everlasting life.

✝PRAYER: Prayer: Lord God Almighty, who has given us Your only Son Jesus Christ to save us from the wrath to come, give us grace to serve you in this generation through the same Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

*DATE:* FRIDAY, 21ST JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* TOTAL ALLEGIANCE FROM GOD'S PEOPLE *TEXT:* HOSEA 1:1-2:1

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel:

2. When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.”

3. So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

4. Then the Lord said to Hosea, “Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.

5. In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.”

6. Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea, “Call her Lo-Ruhamah (which means “not loved”), for I will no longer show love to Israel, that I should at all forgive them.

7. Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God, will save them.”

8. After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son.

9. Then the Lord said, “Call him Lo-Ammi (which means “not my people”), for you are not my people, and I am not your God.

10. “Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘children of the living God.’

11. The people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together; they will appoint one leader and will come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

_*HOSEA 2: 1*_

1. “Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’

*MESSAGE:*
God's relationship with Israel is frequently compared to a marriage contract (Jer. 3:14). Israel's departing from the Lord (Hos. 1:2) in order to worship idols was treated by God as spiritual infidelity or prostitution. Hosea's marriage was to be an object lesson for the unfaithful Northern Kingdom. Gomer was likely not a prostitute at the time of her marriage, but she would later turn to an adulterous and immoral life which God hates.

You shall have no other gods before me "(Exo. 20:3). God hates idolatry "No one can serve two masters, neither you will hate one and love the other nor you will still be devoted to one and despise the other, you cannot serve God and money " (Matt. 6:24).

God demands total allegiance from his people; He hates disloyalty. He looks forward to seeing His people obey Him and in return bless them. "Be it far from me for them that honour me, I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed" (1 Sam. 2:30).

*PRAYER:*
Dear Father, may all the glory and honour be ascribed to You now and forevermore. *Amen.*

2. " Bring charges against your mother, bring charges; For she [is] not My wife, nor [am] I her Husband! Let her put away her harlotries from her sight, And her adulteries from between her breasts;
3. Lest I strip her naked And expose her, as in the day she was born, And make her like a wilderness, And set her like a dry land, And slay her with thirst.
4. "I will not have mercy on her children, For they [are] the children of harlotry.
5. For their mother has played the harlot; She who conceived them has behaved shamefully. For she said, 'I will go after my lovers, Who give [me] my bread and my water, My wool and my linen, My oil and my drink.'
6. " Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, And wall her in, So that she cannot find her paths.
7. She will chase her lovers, But not overtake them; Yes, she will seek them, but not find [them.] Then she will say, 'I will go and return to my first husband, For then [it was] better for me than now.'
8. For she did not know That I gave her grain, new wine, and oil, And multiplied her silver and gold -- [Which] they prepared for Baal.
9. " Therefore I will return and take away My grain in its time And My new wine in its season, And will take back My wool and My linen, [Given] to cover her unclothedness.
10. Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, And no one shall deliver her from My hand.
11. I will also cause all her mirth to cease, Her feast days, Her New Moons, Her Sabbaths -- All her appointed feasts.
12. "And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, Of which she has said, 'These [are] my wages that my lovers have given me.' So I will make them a forest, And the beasts of the field shall eat them.
13. I will punish her For the days of the Baals to which she burned incense. She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry, And went after her lovers; But Me she forgot," says the LORD.
14. " Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Will bring her into the wilderness, And speak comfort to her.
15. I will give her her vineyards from there, And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope; She shall sing there, As in the days of her youth, As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16. "And it shall be, in that day," Says the LORD, "[That] you will call Me 'My Husband,' And no longer call Me 'My Master,'
17. For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals, And they shall be remembered by their name no more.

✝STUDY

Israel wrongly attributed its agricultural fertility to Baal, a Canaanite god. A false god! They erroneously believed that Baal controlled weather and thus, farming. Instead of the Lord God Almighty, who gave all the blessings and protection, the Children of Israel ran to false gods. Israel became unfaithful to God. Prophet Hosea condemned Israel's unfaithfulness to the true God. For this infidelity, the Lord first initiates a divorce against Israel, the promiscuous wife. The prophet prophesied that the Lord would fence Israel in "with thorn bushes" and "block her path" by making the rewards of idol worship so disappointing that the people would be persuaded to turn back to God. Despite Israel's unfaithfulness, God was still faithful and merciful. God promises a re-betrothal. He would continue to hold His arms out to His people, even to the point of placing obstacles in their wayward path to turn them back to him.

What can couple, families, friends, churches, pastors and individuals learn from this experience? Infidelity breaks covenants; unfaithfulness spoils a good relationship. Idolatry provokes God Forgiveness heals injuries and restores good relationships. The Lord is the great provider, preserver and sustainer of life. The Lord God, not Baal is Israel's benefactor.

✝ PRAYER: Prayer: Dear father, please, forgive me for my unfaithfulness and grant me grace to love you most dearly. Amen.

✝TOPIC: OBEDIENCE

✝TEXT: John 2:1-12 (NKJV)

1. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
2. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
3. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4. Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5. His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6. Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.
7. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
8. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it.
9. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
10. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

11. This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
12. After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.

✝STUDY

The miracle of turning water into wine was the "beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee" (v.11). We are to note that Jesus responded to a request from his beloved mother, Mary. A very important principle in our relationship with Christ is established by what the mother, Mary, told those serving officials. "Whatever He says to you, do it" (v.5).

This is obedience. This important principle is very fundamental in our relationship with God. God desires our obedience built on bur love for Him. He requires us to love Him with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength. Love makes us obey Him by keeping His commandments. Jesus said "You are my friends if you do whatsoever, I command you" (John 15:14). For us to know what He commands us to do, we must be close to Him to hear Him. This closeness with the Lord is attained by obediently studying the word of God in faith and in prayer.

✝ PRAYER: Prayer: Dear Lord, take away the stony heart from me and grant me the heart of flesh that will enable me to obey you in everything. Amen.

*THEME:* DON'T SHIFT BLAME *TEXT:* HOSEA 4:1-16

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
because the Lord has a charge to bring against you who live in the land:
“There is no faithfulness, no love,
no acknowledgment of God in the land.
2. There is only cursing, lying and murder,
stealing and adultery;
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
3. Because of this the land dries up,
and all who live in it waste away;
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are swept away.

4. “But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.
5. You stumble day and night,
and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother—
6. My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.

“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
7. The more priests there were,
the more they sinned against me;
they exchanged their glorious God for something disgraceful.
8. They feed on the sins of my people
and relish their wickedness.
9. And it will be: Like people, like priests.
I will punish both of them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.

10. “They will eat but not have enough;
they will engage in prostitution but not flourish,
because they have deserted the Lord
to give themselves 11 to prostitution;
old wine and new wine
take away their understanding.
12. My people consult a wooden idol,
and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.
A spirit of prostitution leads them astray;
they are unfaithful to their God.
13. They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak, poplar and terebinth,
where the shade is pleasant.
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution
and your daughters-in-law to adultery.

14. “I will not punish your daughters
when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots
and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes—
a people without understanding will come to ruin!

15. “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
do not let Judah become guilty.

“Do not go to Gilgal;
do not go up to Beth Aven.
And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’
16. The Israelites are stubborn,
like a stubborn heifer.
How then can the Lord pasture them
like lambs in a meadow?

*MESSAGE:*
Israel's lawless behaviour had brought the twin judgements of increased violence and ecological crisis. The prophetic speeches of Hosea indicted Israel for unfaithfulness and announced the divine judgement. The prophet revealed that the Lord had an indictment against Israel. He warned the priests not to blame anyone else; the nation's sins were largely their fault. Israel's priests pointed out the people's sins, but God would not allow them to overlook their own irresponsible actions. Instead of instructing the nation in religion and morality, they had led the way toward idolatry and immorality. Their failure to lead the people in God's ways placed most of the blame for Israel's destruction on them. The religious leaders had failed to turn the people to God, and ritual prostitution had replaced right worship. The nation had declined spiritually and morally, breaking the laws that God had given them. The people found it easy to condemn Hosea's wife for her adultery but they were not so quick to see that they had been unfaithful to God.

God will not allow us to blame others for our own sinful actions. Beware of the tendency to blame others because it can stop you from feeling the need to repent. When we face difficulties, we should seriously ask: Have I done anything sinful or irresponsible that has caused my suffering? If we discover that we are at fault, even partially, we must change our ways before God will help us.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, I humbly acknowledge that I am responsible for my unfaithfulness. Please, have mercy on me. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 25TH JANUARY, 2022 _*{Conversion of Apostle Paul}*_
*THEME:* CALLED BY GRACE AND REVELATION OF CHRIST *TEXT:* GALATIANS 1: 11-16a

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

11. I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin.

12. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

13. For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

14. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

15. But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased

16. To reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles.

*MESSAGE:*
Paul insisted that his calling was by revelation of Jesus and by grace. He was a persecutor of the followers of Jesus Christ out of zeal for God, in line with Jewish traditions but God elected to use him in spite of his being a prosecutor. Grace was at work in Paul's calling.

Our calling is by grace too. Some of us were outright rebels against the ways of God before our calling, yet He called us. Are you zealous for your creator? Do you have experiential revelation of Christ? Which area has God assigned to you? Paul had zeal for God; he got a revelation of Christ and his area of assignment was clear to him: To preach to the gentiles. Therefore, let each believer develop zeal for God and things of God. God sees our inner hunger for Him and often makes way for us to encounter Him by revelation, and then He will usually assign a specific area of calling to us. Our responsibility is to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and to obey Him. Jesus remains the Way. Let us desire an encounter with the Lord who has put in place diverse areas of life to represent Him. Let each believer endeavour to identify his or her area of calling or ministry and diligently pursue the same.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, grant me encounter with You by grace; help me to locate my area of calling and strengthen me to be diligent in it. _*Amen.*_

✝ DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL
Date: 2022-01-26
(Timothy and Titus, Companions of Paul)

✝TOPIC: GOD IS DEPENDABLE

✝TEXT: Titus 1:1-5 (NKJV)

1. Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness,
2. in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
3. but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior;
4. To Titus, a true son in [our] common faith: Grace, mercy, [and] peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5. For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you --

✝STUDY

Today, Apostle Paul reminds us of one of the attributes of God in verse 2 of our text, wherein, he says "... in hope of eternal life which God, who Cannot lie, promised before time began..." In Hebrew 6:18, we are reminded that "... it is impossible for God to lie... " In our text Apostle, Paul also reminded us of the promise of God on eternal life. The link is absolutely important. God made a promise to give eternal life to all that believe in Him and receive His son Jesus Christ (John 3:16). Our acceptance or belief in His word is built on the faithfulness of God who cannot lie. His word is yes and amen.

It is equally on this note that God desires us to cultivate this character so that we will live as His children. He says "But let your yes be simply "yes" andyour "no", be simply "no", lest you fall into judgment (James 5:12). In the same vein, our Lord Jesus Christ admonished us in Matthew 5:37, "But let your "yes" be "yes" and your "no", no, 'for whatever is more than these is from the evil one." God demands that in all our relationship with Him and with each other we must show honesty, integrity and firmness in upholding the truth.

✝ PRAYER: Prayer: Lord, grant us the grace to attain your character of honesty in our relationship with you and our fellow men that our lives will bring glory to your holy name. Amen.

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 27TH JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* NOTHING IS HIDDEN BEFORE GOD *TEXT:* HOSEA 5:1-7

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. “Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, you Israelites!
Listen, royal house!
This judgment is against you:
You have been a snare at Mizpah,
a net spread out on Tabor.

2. The rebels are knee-deep in slaughter.
I will discipline all of them.

3. I know all about Ephraim;
Israel is not hidden from me.
Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution;
Israel is corrupt.

4. “Their deeds do not permit them
to return to their God.
A spirit of prostitution is in their heart;
they do not acknowledge the Lord.

5. Israel’s arrogance testifies against them;
the Israelites, even Ephraim, stumble in their sin;
Judah also stumbles with them.

6. When they go with their flocks and herds
to seek the Lord,
they will not find him;
he has withdrawn himself from them.

7. They are unfaithful to the Lord;
they give birth to illegitimate children.
When they celebrate their New Moon feasts,
he will devour their fields.

*MESSAGE:*
God sees all things; He knows us inside out. He is a just God who gives warnings before He judges any people or nation. He warned the priests, kings and people of Israel who deliberately lured their neighbours, Mizpah and Tabor into idolatry (v. 1). He is not a respecter of any person. Your life should have a positive impact on people around you. God pronounced judgment on Israel and we are reminded that He has appointed a day He will judge sinners. We are therefore warned to escape His impending wrath by repenting and turning away from sin (v.4).

God is interested in the future generation of all nations. The priests, kings and people of Israel did not just turn away their neighbours from God but raised their children in idolatry. Do you think it is possible for such children to grow up and follow the way of the Lord? God wants us to train our children to love and worship Him (Gen. 18:19). Can God depend on us to raise godly seeds for Him? Like Israel, many people have forsaken the Lord and are running after money, fame, degrees, status and pleasure; many have made these things their gods. Instead of Israel to return to God in true repentance, they decided to offer Him their flocks and herds (v.6). Sacrifices cannot take the place of repentance in one's life. If we fail to seek Him with true repentance, we will not find Him. He will withdraw from us, as He did to the Israelites. May we seek the Lord while He may be found (2 Cor. 6:2). May we never allow Him to withdraw from us. We should direct our deeds to God, not only by true repentance, but to know Him more through daily studying and meditating on His word, prayer and regular attendance to fellowship or church activities.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, help me to be conscious of the fact that nothing about my life is hidden from You. _*Amen.*_

8. " Blow the ram's horn in Gibeah, The trumpet in Ramah! Cry aloud [at] Beth Aven, '[Look] behind you, O Benjamin!'
9. Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke; Among the tribes of Israel I make known what is sure.
10. "The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark; I will pour out my wrath on them like water.
11. Ephraim is oppressed [and] broken in judgment, Because he willingly walked by [human] precept.
12. Therefore I [will be] to Ephraim like a moth, And to the house of Judah like rottenness.
13. "When Ephraim saw his sickness, And Judah [saw] his wound, Then Ephraim went to Assyria And sent to King Jareb; Yet he cannot cure you, Nor heal you of your wound.
14. For I [will be] like a lion to Ephraim, And like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, [even] I, will tear [them] and go away; I will take [them] away, and no one shall rescue.
15. I will return again to My place Till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me."
6:1. Come, and let us return to the LORD; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.

2. After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.

3. Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth.

4. “O Ephraim, what shall I do to you? O Judah, what shall I do to you? For your faithfulness is like a morning cloud, And like the early dew it goes away.

5. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets, I have slain them by the words of My mouth; And your judgments are like light that goes forth.

6. For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

✝STUDY

Sinners provoke God and make Him pronounce judgement on them and the judgement after then. Just as the different tribes in Israel provoked God and awaited His wrath, many countries of the world today, are accumulating God's wrath by sponsoring and promoting evil. Today, many people sponsor and promote armed robbery, kidnapping, ritual killing, immorality, child trafficking, cultism and abortion. People provoke God, day after day and He is not happy, because of the sins which have become the order of the day. However, God in His mercy pleads that we retum to Him. He makes it clear that we will only embrace His mercy when we return to Him with all our heart. God desires mercy and not burnt offerings.

When we sincerely return to God through genuine repentance, His mercy will triumph over judgement. God desires all men to be saved. He is not willing that any should perish. Repent today from all your sins and receive His pardon. He is a merciful and loving Father.

✝ PRAYER: Prayer: God of mercy, forgive us our sins. Cleanse us from all Unrighteousness and give us a new spirit and a new heart through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Israel is defiled.

11. “Also for you, Judah,
a harvest is appointed.

“Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,

*Hosea 7: 1-2*
1. Whenever I would heal Israel,
the sins of Ephraim are exposed
and the crimes of Samaria revealed.
They practice deceit,
thieves break into houses,
bandits rob in the streets;
2. But they do not realize
that I remember all their evil deeds.
Their sins engulf them;
they are always before me.

*MESSAGE:*
The spate of wickedness and corruption found among both priests and people (6:8-10) was described by the Lord as horrible. How often has the Lord seen horrible practices in our families, businesses, gatherings and ceremonies? How often have we infringed the covenant of the blood of His Son with utter disregard and disdain? The Lord, being righteous and just, moved against His own people. Yes, their own doings beset them about (7:2). However, it is important to note that the Lord also bears the attitude of restoration and healing (6:11), for as many as would turn from their evil ways.

He is merciful and abounds in steadfast love if the wicked would forsake his ways and the unrighteous his thoughts (Isa. 55:7). The new covenant of the blood of Jesus is one we should treat with utmost honour and respect; else we move God against us (Heb. 10:29-30). Obedience to the words of the covenant bring blessings, while the opposite brings curses. The choice is always ours.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Father, please grant me true humility and obedience in all my endeavours with You. _*Amen.*_

so do bands of priests;
they murder on the road to Shechem,
carrying out their wicked schemes.

✝ DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL
Date: 2022-01-30
(Fourth Sunday after Epiphany)

✝TOPIC: CHRIST HEALS A LEPER

✝TEXT: Mark 1:40-45 (NKJV)

40. Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."
41. Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out [His] hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed."
42. As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
43. And He strictly warned him and sent him away at once,
44. and said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
45. However, he went out and began to proclaim [it] freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction.

✝STUDY

In the Old Testament times, being a leper meant that like many today, one lived in quarantine. Then, as now, anyone suffering from any form of contagious, terminal diseases met with discrimination. In those days, that meant physical as well as social distancing. "If you will," the leper pleaded. "You can make me clean" - an act of pure submission and humility, or was it? By imposing his desire on Jesus, the man put Jesus at risk of a different type of contagiousness of other people's selfishness! It was not really about Jesus' will; rather it was about the man's desire versus God's plans for Jesus ministry. For, after receiving the healing, the man ignored Jesus stern command to keep what had happened a secret. The man's actions cost Jesus. Their roles were somewhat reversed, The man was welcomed in society and could mix and mingle with everyone; while Jesus had to avoia the crowds. Even then, people found Jesus wherever He was.

When we try to impose our will above God's purposes, the consequence is often detrimental. It may not seem obvious to us, as the cost may not be ours. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we find that our choices and acts of disobedience - partying by some as well as unmasking during worship - are often against the law of the land and God's plan. This has cost many their lives and livelihood. Instead of our own desires, we must always choose to obey God's plan.

✝ PRAYER: Prayer: O God, grant me the grace to always choose to obey you.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* MONDAY, 31ST JANUARY, 2022
*THEME:* THE EFFECT OF ISRAEL'S SEVERANCE FROM GOD *TEXT:* HOSEA 8

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. “Put the trumpet to your lips!
An eagle is over the house of the Lord
because the people have broken my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
2. Israel cries out to me,
‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’
3. But Israel has rejected what is good;
an enemy will pursue him.
4. They set up kings without my consent;
they choose princes without my approval.
With their silver and gold
they make idols for themselves
to their own destruction.
5. Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity?
6. They are from Israel!
This calf—a metalworker has made it;
it is not God.
It will be broken in pieces,
that calf of Samaria.

7. “They sow the wind
and reap the whirlwind.
The stalk has no head;
it will produce no flour.
Were it to yield grain,
foreigners would swallow it up.
8. Israel is swallowed up;
now she is among the nations
like something no one wants.
9. For they have gone up to Assyria
like a wild donkey wandering alone.
Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.
10. Although they have sold themselves among the nations,
I will now gather them together.
They will begin to waste away
under the oppression of the mighty king.

11. “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,
these have become altars for sinning.
12. I wrote for them the many things of my law,
but they regarded them as something foreign.
13. Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,
and though they eat the meat,
the Lord is not pleased with them.
Now he will remember their wickedness
and punish their sins:
They will return to Egypt.
14. Israel has forgotten their Maker and built palaces;
Judah has fortified many towns.
But I will send fire on their cities
that will consume their fortresses.”

*MESSAGE:*
Here, we see the house of Israel under the besiegement of Assyria. This precarious state should elicit an alarm (v.1). The reason for this ugly situation is found in verse 1. Israel had broken God's covenant. They only acknowledged God with their lips (v.2), but rejected Him in their deeds (v.3). This, is a demonstration of hardness of heart.

How often have we rejected God in our deeds and attitude? Has God's approval for life's major and minor decisions become of little or no consequence? Have worldly festivities found their ways into our gatherings with religious connotations? If these have become the cases, then we should go back to God for renewal (Ezek. 36:26-27). The effect of Israel's severance from God is seen from verses 7 to 14. God judges His people and we have to bear in mind that He is fair and just. With a fearful prospect of His judgment, let us live in awe of Him lest we be judged with the rest of the world.

*PRAYER:*
Almighty God, grant me the grace to serve and worship You in truth and spirit through Christ our Lord. _*Amen.*_
