TOPIC: COMPLETE OBEDIENCE

✝️TEXT: Ezekiel 24:15-end(NKJV)

15. Also the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

16. “Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with one stroke; yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, nor shall your tears run down.

17. Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head, and put your sandals on your feet; do not cover your lips, and do not eat man’s bread of sorrow.”

18. So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died; and the next morning I did as I was commanded.

19. And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things signify to us, that you behave so?”

20. Then I answered them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

21. ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, your arrogant boast, the desire of your eyes, the delight of your soul; and your sons and daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.

22. And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips nor eat man’s bread of sorrow.

23. Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you shall neither mourn nor weep, but you shall pine away in your iniquities and mourn with one another.

24. Thus Ezekiel is a sign to you; according to all that he has done you shall do; and when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord God.’ ”

25. ‘And you, son of man—will it not be in the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that on which they set their minds, their sons and their daughters:

26. that on that day one who escapes will come to you to let you hear it with your ears?

27. On that day your mouth will be opened to him who has escaped; you shall speak and no longer be mute. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”

✝️️STUDY: In our text today, God told Ezekiel that his loving wife would die and that he should not mourn her. As human beings, we know that this is not palatable or convenient. No reasonable husband would take the news of his wife’s death as a symbol of laughter. Ezekiel obeyed God fully and did not mourn his wife as he was commanded. In the same vein, Israel was instructed not to mourn over Jerusalem when it would be destroyed. Israel was to emulate Ezekiel in obedience; there must not be weeping nor mourning when Jerusalem would become desolate. As Christians, we must understand that obedience to God is non-negotiable.

As in the case of Ezekiel, it could sometimes be painful to obey the Lord. At such points, we are to note that we can never be wrong for choosing to do the right things as commanded by the Lord. When God forbids a thing, we need not rationalise and encourage ourselves to do it after all. As a child of God, you should obey God wholeheartedly in all your endeavours today and always. Do not join the camp of those who twist the word of God to satisfy their personal ego and fulfil their selfish desires. You are supposed to be an obedient child. God will help you.

✝️PRAYER: Lord, give me grace to obey you in all things in Jesus’ name. (Amen)

TOPIC: LOVE NOT THE WORLD

✝️TEXT: 1 John 2:8-17(NKJV)
8. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
9. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
10. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
11. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12. I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake.
13. I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him [who is] from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.
14. I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him [who is] from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.
15. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16. For all that [is] in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world.
17. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

✝️️STUDY: The warning of not loving the world or the things in the world is directed to Christians as contained in our text today. John makes it clear that Christians should live differently and not according to the world standard. The world, according to this text, refers to the evil, organised system under Satan, which operates through unbelievers, who are God’s enemy (Rom. 8:7). He specifically mentioned the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life as the sinful things in the world from which Christians are to run. The Bible forbids worldliness for us as Christians. You are Christ’s ambassador. You should not live to satisfy your lustful desires which will only separate you from the love of God. We are not to love the world because that will make us God’s enemies.

Sexual sins and other indulgences, greedy desires for material riches and possessions of this world as well as self-advertisement are not part of our Christian heritage; they are of the world. As a child of God, you are not supposed to be under the control of these things. Be determined to choose the pathway of righteousness.

✝️ PRAYER: Lord, please deal with every lust of the flesh in my life. Amen.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* MONDAY, 25TH JULY, 2022 _*{St. James’ the Apostle’s Day}*_ *THEME:* JAMES: A ZEALOUS DISCIPLE

*TEXT:* ACTS 11: 27-12:2

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

27. And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
30. Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

_*Acts 12: 1-2*_
1. Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

*MESSAGE:*

Today, we commemorate St. James, the son of Zebedee, one of the Twelve Apostles. Though he was a devoted and zealous disciple, his life was cut short by King Herod (v.2). King Herod, at the time the Church was beginning to expand, raised a persecution against her and killed James, the brother of John. James, together with Peter and John, formed the innermost circle of associates of Jesus Christ. The three were present when Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:37; Luke 8:51); witnessed the transfiguration (Matt. 17:1; Mark 9:2) and were summoned by Christ for support during His agony in Gethsemane (Matt. 26:36-37; Mark 14:32-34). James and John, because of their fanaticism, were called ‘Boanerges’ or ‘sons of thunder’ by the Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 3:17). James was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred at around A.D. 44 by King Herod.

Beloved, the apostles of Christ did not count their lives dear but launched themselves to the deep of soul-winning and World Evangelisation. They were determined to fulfil the Great Commission and they all died one cruel death or the other in a bid to fulfil the Master’s mandate. You should also strive to have your name written on the sands of time in preaching the Gospel of Christ. It is important that you carry the message of God’s love in your heart every day and ensure you share the love of Christ with someone each day. The early Church was preoccupied with the message of the cross of Christ and we cannot do less. God counts on you!

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, give me the passion to preach the Gospel and share the love of Christ every day, in Jesus’ name. _*Amen.*_

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY:*
God says -

_"I will strengthen you with feet like a deer so you can reach great heights."_ *Habakkuk 3:19*

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 26TH JULY, 2022 *THEME:* YOU SHALL NOT MURDER

*TEXT:* EXODUS 20:12-17

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

12. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13. Thou shalt not kill.
14. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15. Thou shalt not steal.
16. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
17. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

*MESSAGE:*

Yesterday, we discussed how King Herod killed James. Interestingly enough, he reaped mysterious death in return (Acts 12:23). In the Decalogue, the sixth commandment says “Thou shall not kill.” God forbids killing for His covenant people and by extension, for the entire human race. It therefore follows that man must run away from violence, assault, hatred and anger that could naturally lead to destruction of life. God’s command is “You shall not commit murder.”

Today, killing has taken new dimensions in our society. Some politicians are involved in killing their opponents secretly in order to remain in power or divert electoral mandates. Some religious fanatics take joy in killing innocent citizens all in the name of propagating their destructive faith. A good number of Nigerian youths are involved in ritual-for-money killings while some take human lives because they are mandated to shed blood by their evil associations. You are not a child of the devil and you do not belong to that camp. But then, you should realise that you can also kill with your mouth when you backbite, slander or wilfully destroy your fellow human beings (James 3:7-12). Always remember that it is not only he who carries a gun that can kill; you can kill with your mouth, your pen, your action and inaction.

*PRAYER:*
Father, help me to be Your loving and kind child and not to kill my fellow human beings in whatever manner, in Jesus’ name. *Amen.*

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY:*
God says -

_"If you share with the needy, My glory will guard your back."_ *Isaiah 58:7-8*

TOPIC: LET US PRAISE THE LORD

✝️TEXT: Psalm 148:1-14 (NKJV)

1. Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights!
2. Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!
3. Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light!
4. Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens!
5. Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created.
6. He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree which shall not pass away.
7. Praise the LORD from the earth, You great sea creatures and all the depths;
8. Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
9. Mountains and all hills; Fruitful trees and all cedars;
10. Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and flying fowl;
11. Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth;
12. Both young men and maidens; Old men and children.
13. Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory [is] above the earth and heaven.
14. And He has exalted the horn of His people, The praise of all His saints -- Of the children of Israel, A people near to Him. Praise the LORD!

✝️️STUDY: Today we commemorate the anniversary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS).

We should be able to praise God for this Society considering how God used her to reach the unreached through her missionary work in Africa, particularly Nigeria. So, it is a good thing to praise the Lord for the great things He accomplished for the global Church through the missionary enadeavours of the CMS. In verses 1-4 of our text, the heavens and the angels are called upon to praise the Lord. Even the sun, moon and stars of light are included in this summons. In verses 7-12, the sea creatures, deep, fire and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind, mountains and hills, old men, children and all other created things are called to praise the Lord. Brethren, this is an open invitation to everybody to praise the Lord, because He is worthy of our praise.

Our attitude at all times should be that of praising the Lord for who He is and many wonders of His hands. This is our own time here on this side of eternity and we need to use it judiciously in praising God at all times. Praising God should not only be in the Church on Sunday; God is good to us at all times not only on Sunday. The created things in the heavens and on the earth should praise God every time. You are God’s own image - praise Him always!

✝️ PRAYER: I will bless the Lord at all times.

TOPIC: DO NOT FEAR: DRAW NEARER GOD

✝️TEXT: Exodus 20: 18-26 (NKJV)

18. Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw [it,] they trembled and stood afar off.
19. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die."
20. And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin."
21. So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God [was.]
22. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: 'You have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
23. 'You shall not make [anything to be] with Me -- gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves.
24. 'An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record My name I will come to you, and I will bless you.
25. 'And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.
26. 'Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your unclothedness may not be exposed on it.'

✝️️STUDY: God speaks in the way that best accomplishes His purpose at every point in time (1Kings 19:11-12).

The manifestations of God on Mount Sinai caused the Israelites to cry out to Moses that he should speak to them as the representative of God. They did not want to hear God directly to avoid death (v.19). Moses simply told them to “fear not.” God did not want His people to be afraid of Him like a servant before his cruel Master. He is a loving Father. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2Tim.1:7). God wants us to follow Him out of love not out of fear. To overcome fear, we must think more about God’s love (1John 4:18). One basic evidence of embracing the love of God is the desire to draw nearer Him every day. God Himself cherishes this relationship so much that He wants you to always approach Him. There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out fear (1John 4:18). Fear is different from reverence and awe. The closer we are to Him the more we lose sight of the world and its destructive pleasures.

Therefore, begin to express love and not fear in your relationship with God. Though He is awesome, powerful and terrible, God is ever loving and approachable. You can draw nearer Him every day.

✝️ PRAYER: Father Lord, give me the grace to overcome every form of fear in my life in Jesus’ name. Amen

TOPIC: GIVE YOUR BEST TO THE LORD

✝️TEXT: John 12:1-8(NKJV)
1. Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead.
2. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.
3. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
4. Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's [son,] who would betray Him, said,
5. "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"
6. This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
7. But Jesus said, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial.
8. "For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."

✝️️STUDY: Today’s passage reveals to us the expression of the love Mary had for Jesus. Six days before the Passover, the time when Jesus would host the Last Supper, just before His crucifixion, He came to the house of Simon the Leper; Mary, Martha and Lazarus were present. Jesus was received gladly and honoured as the special guest by His friends in the house of Simon the Leper. The encounter they had with Jesus made them surrender what they had to Him. Lazarus gave his time and attention to Him by listening to His word. Martha served Him while Mary lavished an expensive ointment on Him. Jesus Christ expects nothing but the best from you. You should give your best to the Lord at all times.

The ointment Mary poured on Jesus Christ was an expensive one (v.3). The response of Judas Iscariot was a clear indication that the ointment was very valuable (v.4). That shows how much Mary loved Jesus. Many people who claim to love Jesus, are not willing to give Him their best. They have never come to know Him to the point where they are willing to offer Him the best of their lives. Love can only be expressed through giving. God loves the world and He gave his only begotten Son, so that anyone who accepts him will not perish (John 3:16).

Abraham loved God and he was ready to offer Isaac his son as a sacrifice to Him. It is in this light you should also give your best to the Lord. The most precious gift you can offer to Jesus Christ is your life. Giving other things to the Lord will be much easier thereafter (Romans 12:1-3). You can never regret doing so.

✝️ PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me the grace to offer my life to You as a living sacrifice, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TOPIC: LIFE IS GOVERNED BY RULES AND REGULATIONS

✝️TEXT: Exodus 21:32-36 (NKJV)

32. "If the ox gores a male or female servant, he shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.
33. " And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it,
34. "the owner of the pit shall make [it] good; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead [animal] shall be his.
35. " If one man's ox hurts another's, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money from it; and the dead [ox] they shall also divide.
36. "Or if it was known that the ox tended to thrust in time past, and its owner has not kept it confined, he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal shall be his own.

✝️STUDY: Today’s text confirms that laws and regulations are essential for harmonious living. The law is God’s standard to regulate the conduct and activities of believers and as well measure their levels of obedience. Breaking God’s laws brings death (Genesis 2:15-17). Laws and regulations keep the society safe and make it free from conflicts and social vices.

The laws of the land and the laws of God work together to achieve the same goal: Safety of life and property. God gave people of Israel rules and regulations so they could live peaceably with one another. The summary of the whole law as given by the Lord Jesus Christ is to love God with the whole of our hearts and our neighbours as ourselves. Beloved, if we love God, we will keep his commandments and take responsibility not to hurt our fellow man, or allow his belongings to be destroyed (vv. 33-34). The crises we experience today in Nigeria result from lawlessness. Terrorists and bandits have ravaged our societies. Our laws are ineffective in dealing with corruption, especially in government business.

The only solution to our predicament is total obedience to God’s laws (Isaiah 1:19 & Deut. 28:1-2). The Scripture has capacity to illuminate our lives, transform our minds, safeguard our destinies and guarantee our safety here on earth and hereafter, if we read and carefully obey what is written therein.

✝️ PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to be obedient to your laws, so that all your promises will be fulfilled in my life, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

TOPIC: FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

✝️TEXT: Galatians 5:16-26 (NKJV)

16. I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
18. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20. idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
21. envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told [you] in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23. gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24. And those [who are] Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

✝️️STUDY: Today’s passage urges believers to walk in the Spirit in order to bear the fruits of the Spirit. At redemption, Christians receive the nature of God to bear fruit of the Spirit. These seeds can only grow and mature through personal devotion and constant prayers with the help of the Holy Spirit. Just as the physical fruits need time to grow, so the fruit of the Spirit will not ripe in our lives overnight. As a vine dresser needs to get rid of weeds to enjoy the sweet fruit he desires, so also must believers do away with the old nature of sin that can choke up the fruit of the Spirit. Beloved in Christ, fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of being connected to Christ (v.22). Except you abide in Christ Jesus, you cannot bear these fruits.

The kind of life a believer lives will determine the kind of fruit he produces (Matthew 7:16-20). We have to be focused in our relationship with the Holy Spirit who is the Producer of the fruits. God desires that all believers should manifest these fruits in their lives. As a Child of God, do not disconnect yourself from the Source - the Holy Spirit. You can only manifest the fruit of the Spirit when you remain connected to the Lord.

✝️ PRAYER: Father, fill me with Your Spirit that I may live to please You in all things, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* MONDAY, 1ST AUGUST, 2022 *THEME:* COMFORT IN TIMES OF TROUBLE

*TEXT:* 2 CORINTHIANS 1:1-7

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:
2. Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4. Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
6. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
7. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

*MESSAGE:*

Challenged by some false apostles especially in Corinth, Paul, with the authority of an Apostle, began this letter by affirming his apostleship. He reiterated his commission as an apostle to his critics. He however, praised God for the circumstances of his life though there were troubles and afflictions. He called God “the Father of Compassion” and “the God of all comfort” (vv. 3-5). Since he saw God’s hand in all the things in his life, he did not pray to have them removed so he might escape from them but saw them as opportunity to suffer with Christ. He also established that his affliction was a consolation and salvation for other Christians, who would also endure same so they could also be comforted (vv. 6,7). He hoped that as Christians partake in the sufferings, so they would also partake in the consolation thereafter.

Christians are to learn a great lesson from Paul’s experience. Though, in trouble and distress, yet he praised God. This demonstrated his hope and trust in God. Praising God in times of trouble or distress is a way of praying for deliverance. Paul and Silas praised God while in prison and were delivered (Acts 16:25-28). No doubt, we are meant to face challenges in the world but the only way out is to be of good cheer (rejoice in God) because He fights our battles (John 16:33). It is amazing how Christians today face their daily lives filled with challenges but never avail themselves of God’s intervention. The word ‘comfort’ means to strengthen. What Paul experienced was the strengthening of God that gave him peace and which strengthened his faith. So let us learn to praise and rely on God at all times, especially in times of trouble.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, help my faith in You when trouble and afflictions come; help me to overcome them. *Amen.*

8. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
9. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
10. Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
11. Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
12. For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
13. For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;
14. As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.
15. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;
16. And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.
17. When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?
18. But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.
19. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
20. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
21. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
22. Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
23. Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
24. Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

*MESSAGE:*

Apostle Paul in today’s passage, reminded the church at Corinth of his experience together with his fellow missionaries in the province of Asia. They gave up all hope but with the prayers of the church and the help of God, they were delivered from trouble, especially that which came to them in Asia (vv. 8-11). He wanted them to understand his teaching to avoid any doubt about his ministry. In verse 24, Paul wrote to encourage the church to be each other’s helper of joy; he said he did not come to control but to be a helper of joy. The church prayed for him and he also prayed for the church. He described his involvement as ministerial servant rather than dominating force.

Christians also need to do the same in times like this by acting as mediators rather than dictators. Believers are to follow in Paul’s footstep in advancing the gospel, and inspire and encourage those in darkness to seek the light, so they can rejoice for all eternity too. There is need to help each other; we need to be “helpers of joy” to others by praying for them. (1 Tim. 2:1). Be a “helper of someone’s joy”, by giving to someone in need, by encouraging and by comforting.

*PRAYER:*
Father, help me to bring joy and happiness to other people so that they will be blessed through me. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 3RD AUGUST, 2022 *THEME:* BE AN ADVOCATE OF RECONCILIATION

*TEXT:* 2 CORINTHIANS 2: 1-13

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
2. For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3. And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5. But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11. Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
12. Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13. I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

*MESSAGE:*
In this passage, Paul recalls his sorrowful letter to the Corinthians. He reminds them that he intended to provoke them to repentance and conversion through his letter. It was not to cause them pain, but to let them know of his love for them (vv. 1-4). He also asked them to forgive the member of the Church whom they had punished for some serious offences. He wanted them to restore such a person, thus exercising the ministry of reconciliation. According to him, by so doing, Satan would not have opportunity to exploit the Church (vv. 5-11) Paul further maximised every opportunity he had to preach Christ, even when his expectation was not met; he moved forward from place to place (vv. 12-13).

Christians are to learn a great lesson from Paul’s ministry as an advocate of reconciliation. We should desire to bridge the contact between parties in the body of Christ. While we condone discipline, effort should be made to restore such a member after genuine repentance. Forgiveness and repentance should also be our watchword; this will bring comfort among brethren and Christ’s kingdom would be greatly expanded here on earth.

*PRAYER:*
Teach Your Church, O Lord, to uphold the ministry of reconciliation, so that we may enjoy the fellowship of the brethren through Jesus Christ. _*Amen.*_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 4TH AUGUST, 2022 *THEME:* THE AROMA OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST

*TEXT:* 2 CORINTHIANS 2: 14-17

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

14. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

*MESSAGE:*
In today’s passage, Paul likened himself and everyone who preaches the gospel of Christ as an ‘aroma.’ The Greek word for ‘aroma’ /osman/ refers to a smell given off which affects those who come in contact with it. The preaching of the word of God is the aroma that is emanating from Christians. It is a sweet-smelling aroma to those who favourably respond to the preaching of the gospel, and to those who reject, a smell of destruction (v.15). Paul used his knowledge of the Romans to explain the two outcomes of the aroma. When the Romans returned triumphantly from battle, they would burn the incense of victory to their gods. Some of their captives were set free, while others were executed. The fragrance of their incense, therefore, meant life to some and death to others. Though, the aroma of the gospel of Christ is meant to give life but anyone who rejects it is already condemned (v.16; Jn. 3:18).

Christians are the vessels through which God propagates the aroma of the gospel of Christ (Mat. 28:19-20). Our lives ought to reveal Christ to others. We should also be mindful not to preach the gospel of Christ for material gains as some do, rather we should see it as a commission from God (v.17).

*PRAYER:*
Help me O Lord, that my life may possess the aroma of Your word, so that my life may be a pleasing aroma to the world for the sake of Jesus Christ. _*Amen.*_

TOPIC: PUT OUT SELF COMMENDATION

✝️TEXT: 2 Corinthians 3:1-3(NKJV)
1. Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some [others,] epistles of commendation to you or [letters] of commendation from you?
2. You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men;
3. clearly [you are] an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, [that is,] of the heart.

✝️STUDY: The act of commending people will continue to exist as long as man lives. However, Paul must have identified self-commendation creeping into the church at Corinth and this was a bad omen. His reaction in 2Corinthians 3:1 shows that Christians must have been copying the bad habit of self-commendation. Self-commendation easily creates room for pride. The society we live in creates a lot of room for self-commendation; it has become a normal thing to publish your strength, hospitality, goodwill, success, etc. Jesus discourages Christians from this attitude. In our present world, self-commendation may be a show of pride and may also not be sincere.

Christians are not to live like people in the world who sing self-praises. Publishing of miracles is becoming the order; many take pleasure in publishing their strength, ability and wealth. Jesus Christ spoke to discourage the act of showing to the public, the good deeds we do. “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matt. 6:3). Self-commendation easily breeds pride and encourages deceit. Christians are to live by lifting their successes to God’s glory. Paul, a great evangelist, seldom praised himself. Jesus never did for once praise Himself. Let God and others praise you, do not do it for yourself and never ask for it.

✝️ PRAYER: And whoever shall exalt himself shall be abased, and he that humbled himself shall be exalted” Amen.

TOPIC: SEEK PROTECTION IN JESUS

✝️TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-20(NKJV)
10. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
11. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual [hosts] of wickedness in the heavenly [places.]
13. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15. and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16. above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints --
19. and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
20. for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

✝️STUDY: It is not a fallacy that security in the world today has failed and evil is rising by the day. Apart from physical security issues around us every day, Paul identified other forces we contend with in Ephesians 6:11: Principalities, powers, rulers of darkness of the world and spiritual wickedness in high places. The physical evil we see happening everyday are works of these unseen forces. Christians are advised to come under the armour of God to stand against the schemes of the devil. Our battles are beyond the physical. The intensity of the forces that rise against us invites the need for the full (total) armour of God as listed by Paul: Belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, Gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation and above all, the word of God. The whole armour of God therefore is Jesus. Jesus Christ is the only potent protection against all evil powers in the world. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus affirms He has all authority on earth and in heaven. Handing over your life to Him automatically puts you under His armour; in Him, you have eternal security. The knowledge of His word as you study daily, increases your immunity and protection against evil.

✝️PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I submit myself to you today, all I am and have, I keep in You, build around me your eternal security.

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2. And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
4. Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
5. Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
7. So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
8. And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
9. Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
10. So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
11. Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12. Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14. And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

*MESSAGE:*
God took prophet Ezekiel on a journey of assurance of deliverance of the nation of Israel. Ezekiel went with God to the valley of dried bones (what the world would term impossible). God was determined to raise His nation Israel back to life; He also wanted to be sure of their readiness and commitment to the coming miracle. Their prophet must build the kind of faith that shows they could be delivered. The faith of Ezekiel was important because he would lead the prophecy of the freedom of his people and he had faith in the sovereignty of God throughout the journey. His response to God’s question; “Son of man, can these bones live?” was “O Lord GOD, you know” and this showed he was not in doubt of the sovereignty God – the One who is capable of making the impossible possible! The prophet had a simple faith in God. He listened to the command and order of God, and carried out God’s instructions sincerely and the bones came alive.

Faith in God can increase our obedience to His words, and our obedience can as well build a stronger and undoubting faith in God. Faith is critical for transformation; you will need a simple faith to move mountains, surmount obstacles, break new grounds, live fulfilled and raise your hope alive. No matter the intensity of your situation, no matter the hopelessness of your condition, you have Jesus who resurrected and has the power to raise to life. He will make you live again! Only accept and develop a strong faith in Him. Your dried bones shall live again!

*PRAYER:*
Rise and pray for your total deliverance from sin, Satan and death. Prophesy life into your situation in Jesus’ Name.

23. Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.

25. And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
26. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
27. My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
28. And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

*MESSAGE:*
Kingdoms (1 Kings 12). One was called Israel, occasionally Ephraim; the other was called Judah. They were known also as Northern and Southern kingdoms respectively. When the Northern kingdom sinned against God and refused to repent, God allowed them to be carried into exile. Judah did not learn any lesson from the experience of Israel, she committed sin which provoked God to anger. They too were carried into exile. While in exile, they lost hope; they thought God had forsaken them and they were saying, “Our bones are dry, our hope is lost…” (v.11). God now promised that the two kingdoms would be reunited as one kingdom, with one king ruling over them. The Northern kingdom, Israel, and the Southern kingdom, Judah, would become one kingdom. The king to rule over them be the descendant of David and the fulfilment of Davidic covenant (II Sam. 7:16). This Person is Jesus Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

Today’s passage shows that God’s anger does not last forever. Even while He is angry with His people because of their sins, God still has good plan for their restoration. What God requires from a sinner is total repentance and confession of sins.

*TOPIC*: FORGETTING THE PAST SHAME

*TEXT*: Ezekiel 39:21-29(NKJV)

21. " I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgment which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them.
22. "So the house of Israel shall know that I [am] the LORD their God from that day forward.
23. "The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore I hid My face from them. I gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.
24. "According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I have dealt with them, and hidden My face from them." '
25. " Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name --
26. 'after they have borne their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, when they dwelt safely in their [own] land and no one made [them] afraid.
27. 'When I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and I am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations,
28. 'then they shall know that I [am] the LORD their God, who sent them into captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their land, and left none of them captive any longer.
29. 'And I will not hide My face from them anymore; for I shall have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,' says the Lord GOD."

*STUDY*: Have you ever considered how much past shame influences our current lives? It does not take an average human being very long to remember something they are ashamed of. The Israelites, both the Northern and the Southern kingdoms, went into captivity because of their iniquity (v.23). But their captors oppressed them beyond measure. In verse 21, God says He would set His glory among the nations (Israel’s captors) by executing His judgement upon them. His purpose of doing this was to let the house of Israel know that God is the Lord their God; and to let other nations know that the Israelites went into captivity because of their iniquity, and not because those other nations had power over Israel (vv. 22-24). Verses 25-29 contain God’s redemption plans for His people.
This will make them forget their past shame.Today many Christians are facing different kinds of sufferings and persecutions. Some are suffering because of their sins, as we can see in the case of the Israelites; while some others suffer because of their faith in Christ. However, some sufferings are neither persecution nor punishment, but they are consequences of one’s actions. Let us return to God for He will surely put our shame behind us.

*PRAYER*: Almighty God, forgive me my sin and release me from my shame in Jesus’ Name. Amen

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east:
2. And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.
3. And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.
4. And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.
5. So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house.
6. And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me.
7. And he said unto me, Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places.
8. In their setting of their threshold by my thresholds, and their post by my posts, and the wall between me and them, they have even defiled my holy name by their abominations that they have committed: wherefore I have consumed them in mine anger.
9. Now let them put away their whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.
10. Thou son of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern.
11. And if they be ashamed of all that they have done, shew them the form of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the goings out thereof, and the comings in thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the laws thereof: and write it in their sight, that they may keep the whole form thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and do them.
12. This is the law of the house; Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.

*MESSAGE:*

After restoration of Israel in their land, God proposed to live among them. The book of Ezekiel begins with an awe-inspiring vision of God’s glory. Chapters 8-11 describe how the glory of God progressively departed from the temple and the land of Israel because of the sins of the people. Israel’s past evil had created a world in which God could no longer be present among them; a world in which God’s presence could not be known. The prophet concludes with another awe-inspiring vision: God’s glory, power and love filling the temple again. Now God’s glory and presence returned to the temple.

In the Old Testament, God had a temple for His people, but in the New Testament, God has His people for His temple. Christians are expected to drop their old ways of life (v.9) because they are now a new set of people (2Cor. 5:17). They should destroy every of their earthly members (Col. 3:5). Just as God is holy, so Christians are to be holy (Lev. 19:2). Christians will only be holy when they are devoted to God and separated from sin. We should desire above all else to see God’s glory manifested within the church through the operation of the Holy Spirit.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, let Your glory be seen through me in Jesus’ Name. _*Amen.*_

*TEXT:* EZEKIEL 47: 1-12

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar.
2. Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.
3. And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.
4. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.
5. Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.
6. And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river.
7. Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other.
8. Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed.
9. And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh.
10. And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.
11. But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.
12. And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.

*MESSAGE:*

In his vision, Ezekiel saw a stream of water which flowed from beneath the southern side of the platform on which the temple was built. As it flowed, it grew in depth and width, giving life and fruitfulness to everything it touched. As the water flowed from the temple spring, it got deeper, but without other rivers flowing into it. This was amazing in that a stream does not increase as it flows, if it is not fed by other rivers. The river flowed into the Dead Sea which has much concentration of salt which cannot support life. This was a miraculous stream of water. As the river flowed into the Dead Sea, it rid it of death. This river is similar to the one mentioned in Revelation 22:1,2. It symbolises life from God and the blessings that flow from His throne. As the fresh water of the river flowed into the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea became a sea of life (vv. 8-10). Fish began to flourish and fishermen moved there for their fishing business. The trees beside the river began to bear fruit for food as well as produce leaves that have medicinal values.

The purpose of the river is to bring abundant life and healing from God to the land and the people. It is only when God’s presence is firmly established in the centre of a person’s heart that there will be new life and restoration. Your body is that temple of God (1 Cor. 6:19). As God’s presence is evident in one’s life, His blessings should produce fruit (living water, John 7:38) along the way.

*PRAYER:*
As a Christian, are you living a new life in Christ?

*MESSAGE:*
As recorded in today’s text, Prophet Ezekiel, by the Holy Spirit, saw in a vision, a valley which was full of very dry bones. God asked him if the bones could live and he responded, ‘O Lord God, You know’ (v.3). What a smart response! Ezekiel could easily relate with bringing dead bodies back to life but not dry bones. It was indeed a hopeless case! Bones represent both the house of Israel and Judah in exile that was without hope when they were scattered among foreigners. God’s instruction to Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones that they would live gave hope of restoring Israel both politically and spiritually. This implies that Israel would be restored to become a living and vibrant nation again despite their seemingly impossible and hopeless situation.

Your situation could be as hopeless as the dry bones. Everything in and around you may have confirmed that the issue is beyond redemption and as a result, you may have surrendered to fate. When God intervenes, cases like yours magnify the power of God to reverse the irreversible and make the impossible to be possible. Nothing is beyond the redemptive power of God. There is need to keep trusting God and be full of confidence that your story will change and uncommon testimony will come.

*PRAYER:*
O Lord, in Your power let all concluded cases of impossibility in my life and nation be made possible today in Jesus Name. *Amen.*

TOPIC: BEING A WORTHY ELDER

✝️TEXT: 1 Peter 5:1-11(NKJV)
1. The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed:
2. Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
3. nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
4. and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
5. Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to [your] elders. Yes, all of [you] be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."
6. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
7. casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
9. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
10. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle [you.]
11. To Him [be] the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

✝️STUDY: The word ‘Elder’ is used to describe certain persons appointed to hold a position of authority in the church and to have the responsibility of providing spiritual oversight of discipling, feeding, guiding and guarding the flock committed to their care. They are often referred to as overseers or pastors. To be worthy is to have merit and value. Apostle Peter in today’s text admonished the elders (being an elder himself) to carry out their responsibility, not because they must, but willingly.
He warned them to avoid Satan’s trap of love of money and power but be an example to the flock. He emphasised humility and submission in interpersonal relationship, self-control in conduct, dependence and trust in God in times of need as well as exercising spiritual alertness at all times. An elder is a leader and leadership is about influence. You do not need to dominate by using excessive authority. What is needed is exhibiting godly character and carrying others along in fulfilling God’s purpose. At whatever level of leadership you find yourself, you must ensure that you lead by God’s standard and keep yourself from the snares of the evil one. God is counting on you. Be a worthy elder and please God who has chosen you.

✝️PRAYER: Almighty Father, grant me grace to live worthy of your calling every day of my life in Jesus Name.

 *TOPIC*: THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION

✝️ *TEXT*: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21(NKJV)
17. Therefore, if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
18. Now all things [are] of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
19. that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore [you] on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.
21. For He made Him who knew no sin [to be] sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

✝️ *STUDY*: Reconciliation refers to the means by which sinners are restored into a state of favour and fellowship with God. It is the means by which enmity and alienation towards God are brought to an end. This is made possible through Christ’s atoning death which made it possible for sinners to return to God and escape the damnation and judgment awaiting the rebellious. Whenever an individual repents of his sin and exercises faith in the atoning work of Jesus Christ, the barrier which stands between him and God is removed and he is reconciled to God.

Having broken down the middle wall of separation and made us one with God, the duty of calling people to enjoy the same privilege of being reconciled to God has been committed to the hands of the church as Christ’s ambassadors. As a Christian, you should be concerned about the perishing souls and reach out to save them from the coming wrath of God. Salvation of souls and redemption of mankind matters most to God and has sacrificed his best – His only son, Jesus Christ - to make this possible. You must reach out to others and let God appeal to them through you. The business of winning souls for God must be your major preoccupation. You must remember the word of the scripture which says “… and he who wins a soul is wise.”

✝️ *PRAYER*: O Lord, strengthen me to reach out to the lost and be an instrument of reconciliation so that others may come to know your love and enjoy your favour. Amen.

TOPIC: ENDURING HARDSHIPS

✝️TEXT: 2 Corinthians 6:1-10(NKJV)

1. We then, [as] workers together [with Him] also plead with [you] not to receive the grace of God in vain.
2. For He says: "In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.
3. We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed.
4. But in all [things] we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses,
5. in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings;
6. by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love,
7. by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
8. by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and [yet] true;
9. as unknown, and [yet] well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and [yet] not killed;
10. as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and [yet] possessing all things.

✝️STUDY: Hardships are experiences which cause suffering or deprivation. They are unpleasant happenings which make life unbearable and sorrowful for an individual. These events result in physical pain and emotional torture. Apostle Paul, in our text today, listed what he described as troubles, hardships and distresses which are: Beatings, imprisonments, hunger, dishonour, bad reports, misrepresentations, unappreciated affection, riots, sleepless nights and hard work.
He went further to add his coping strategies in all the uncomfortable situations which included endurance, patience, kindness, righteousness, rejoicing, working to better the lives of others, contentment, truthful speech, sincere love, purity, understanding, and above all, relying on the power of God. It is often said that Christianity is not a bed of roses. Life is full of challenges and so is ministry. Christians working day and night to snatch souls from the grip of Satan and his agents must expect confrontation from the evil one. Hardship is a tool employed by Satan to discourage or entirely stop a faithful minister of the gospel. Whatever you are passing through at the moment, you must realise that it is expected and for you to be unshaken and unmoved, you must employ the coping principles of Apostle Paul and depend on the power of God to see you through. It is only then that you will not disappoint God who has called you or let down those who look up to you as a role model.

✝️PRAYER: O Lord, keep me strong and focused in the face of adversity and distresses. Enable me to see you in times of trouble and grant me victory over them all in Jesus Name.

TOPIC: CALL TO SEPARATION AND CONSECRATION

✝️ TEXT 2 Corinthians 6:11-18(NKJV)

11. O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, our heart is wide open.
12. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your [own] affections.
13. Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open.
14. Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
15. And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
16. And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among [them.] I will be their God, And they shall be My people."
17. Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."
18. "I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."

✝️ STUDY: Our passage today informs us that we are called as Christians to sincerely separate ourselves from the filthy things of this world and to completely consecrate our lives to God almighty. Paul was appealing to the Christians at Corinth, having accepted the message of salvation, that it was important for them to get themselves off all manner of things or activities that can affect or destroy their new relationship with God. He gave a list of questions to reinforce his point: How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

What union can there be between God’s temple and idols? As Christians, it is expected of us to separate our works, life, speech and undertakings from things that can destroy our salvation. We must never allow the temporal things of this world to take us off the track of our journey to heaven. We need to absolutely consecrate our lives to God. Then He will continue to be our father and we will be genuine sons and daughters to him.

✝️ PRAYER: Father, teach me to live a separated and consecrated life for you through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 18TH AUGUST, 2022 *THEME:* PERFECTING HOLINESS

*TEXT:* 2 CORINTHIANS 7:1-7

*BIBLE READING* (KJV)

1. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2. Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.
3. I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
4. Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
5. For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
6. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
7. And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

*MESSAGE:*

Our reading today speaks about what must be done before God’s promises to receive and adopt us as his sons and daughters in 2 Cor. 6:14-18, will be fulfilled. Paul here calls the Corinthian Christians to sincerely purify themselves of wrong attitudes and teachings that have been allowed among them. They were to clean themselves by walking in the light where the blood of Jesus continually cleanses the faithful. They were to perfect holiness in the complete fear of God. It means they were to pursue things that would make them holy, leading to a perfect and complete holiness in life.

Presently, the world is full of dirt, both in flesh and in spirit, and Christians are not left out. Though we Christians are in the world full of unholy acts, God still expects us as church and individuals to be holy and even perfect that holiness through the grace bestowed upon us. We should all be conscious of things that defile both the body and mind. Our understanding should be that we are not of the world but we belong to a holy and pure father. Therefore, if God will be our father, we are to live up to the standards placed before us which is to perfect the holiness in us. Since complete and perfect holiness is embodied in Jesus Christ, we are then to thirst after him till He brings us to perfect completion before the father.

*PRAYER:*
Father, give me your power and grace to live a life of holiness to the glory of your name through Jesus Christ our Lord. *Amen.*

TOPIC: GENUINE REPENTANCE

✝️TEXT: 2 Corinthians 7:8-16(NKJV)

8. For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while.
9. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.
10. For godly sorrow produces repentance [leading] to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
11. For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, [what] clearing [of yourselves, what] indignation, [what] fear, [what] vehement desire, [what] zeal, [what] vindication! In all [things] you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
12. Therefore, although I wrote to you, [I did] not [do it] for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.
13. Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
14. For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to Titus was found true.
15. And his affections are greater for you as he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him.
16. Therefore I rejoice that I have confidence in you in everything.

✝️STUDY: The main message of Jesus Christ is that all should repent of their evil ways and turn to God because the kingdom of heaven is near. Likewise, Paul in his letter to the Corinthians stated the same, though the letter caused them sorrow yet, Paul did not regret it. He knew that their sorrow over sins would prompt them to repent and lead them to obedience. Paul was happy because they desired to turn away from their sins and restore their relationship with God. It is needful to have genuine sorrow over one’s sin which leads to genuine and complete repentance.

The world is full of evil, our society has been corrupted, and evil acts are now the order of the day. As Paul called the Christians at Corinth so the word of God is calling us to first identify that we are sinners, exhibit genuine sorrow and thereafter, seek the face of God by determining to forsake every sinful act in order to restore our relationship with God. As a nation, church, family and individuals, God awaits our earnest and sincere repentance, and then He will look down on us and heal our land.

✝️* PRAYER*: Father, give me a repentant heart, to do your will and follow your path, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*TOPIC*: WILLINGNESS IN GIVING

✝️ *TEXT*: 2 Corinthians 8:1-9(NKJV)

1. Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia:
2. that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.
3. For I bear witness that according to [their] ability, yes, and beyond [their] ability, [they were] freely willing,
4. imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
5. And not [only] as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and [then] to us by the will of God.
6. So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well.
7. But as you abound in everything -- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us -- [see] that you abound in this grace also.
8. I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.
9. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

✝️ *STUDY*: This letter is a follow–up to the first written to the Corinthians as regards the Judean famine relief contribution of 1 Cor. 16:1-3. Here Paul seeks to finalise preparation for the Corinthian church to make a contribution for the poor among the Saints in Jerusalem. He mentioned the churches in Macedonia which are Thessalonica, Philippi and Berea who were passing through a terrible time of persecution and poverty. But despite the severity of their poverty, the Christians there exhibited unexpected joy and generosity. In the midst of terrible trials and deep poverty, they gave liberally; they gave beyond their ability, willingly!

The Macedonians were not motivated by clever offering appeals, but drowned in the joy of giving to relieve the poverty of others while they themselves were utterly poor. Amazing! They did not want to be left out in sharing in the service of the saints and being a blessing to others. Today, as Christians, we should understand the grace of God in us and should be ready and willing to give to people as well as the work of mission. Paul pointed to the example of Christ himself in verse 9 and expects us to understand the fact that the need for mission is an unending call.

✝️ *PRAYER*: Lord, please teach us what genuine sacrifice is so that we may become like you through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

*TOPIC*: THE COMMUNION OF THE BELIEVERS

✝️ *TEXT*: Acts 2:41-47(NKJV)

41. Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added [to them.]
42. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,
45. and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
46. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
47. praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

✝️ *STUDY*: Today’s passage tells us about what early church was. Those who received the message of salvation were devoted to the teachings of the apostles, and were together in communion with the breaking of bread and prayer. They were the people who stirred souls with a godly fear and shared together in the ministry. They came together to worship and praise God daily with sincere hearts and God increased their numbers with new brethren added each day.

Today, the church needs to be alive with the traits of the early church. As leaders, we must properly care for the flocks of God by nurturing them with sound teaching focusing on constant fellowship, unceasing prayer, generous giving, spreading love, caring for one another within the fold as well as bringing others to God. All these means are expected to be used in order to grow the church both numerically and spiritually.

✝️ *PRAYER*: Lord, please help me to fulfil your mandate for your church to the glory of Your name. Amen.

*TOPIC*: CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER

✝ *TEXT*: 2 Corinthians 8:10-24(NKJV)

10. And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago;
11. but now you also must complete the doing [of it;] that as [there was] a readiness to desire [it,] so [there] also [may be] a completion out of what [you] have.
12. For if there is first a willing mind, [it is] accepted according to what one has, [and] not according to what he does not have.
13. For [I do] not [mean] that others should be eased and you burdened;
14. but by an equality, [that] now at this time your abundance [may supply] their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack -- that there may be equality.
15. As it is written, "He who [gathered] much had nothing left over, and he who [gathered] little had no lack."
16. But thanks [be] to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.
17. For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord.
18. And we have sent with him the brother whose praise [is] in the gospel throughout all the churches,
19. and not only [that,] but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us to the glory of the Lord Himself and [to show] your ready mind,
20. avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us --
21. providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
22. And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which [we have] in you.
23. If [anyone inquires] about Titus, [he is] my partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren [are inquired about, they are] messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
24. Therefore show to them, and before the churches the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.

✝ *STUDY*: The Achaians had determined a year before the writing of this letter to make a contribution for the famine victims of Judea. It is possible that some people had discouraged them from carrying through on their promise. Therefore, Paul encouraged them to carry out their intentions to make the contribution and thus remain in fellowship with the global church. He also urged them to contribute from a ready and willing mind according to the ability which the Lord had given them; that abundance should not prevail on one hand, while poverty ruled on the other; but that there should be equality (vv. 11-14). Paul mentioned equality to let the people understand that, it is not in God’s plan for any member of the household of faith to live in poverty. So, those who receive the aid should not think they are relieved of their responsibility.

They should also give according to their capacity. As Christians, it is important we know that apart from advancing Christ’s kingdom among the unbelievers, care for fellow Christians should also be our priority. The welfare and satisfaction of our co-labourer should also form part of our ministry, in our case specifically, those affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, the internally displaced brethren, those whose businesses are suffering setbacks due to the emergence of the corona virus pandemic, the unemployed, those suffering from one ailment or the other and others whose conditions we know are to be cared for under our ministry.

✝️ *PRAYER*: Lord, create in me the heart that cares.
