*DATE:* MONDAY, 11TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* PROVIDED AS PREDICTED

*TEXT:* LUKE 22: 1-23

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
2. And the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
3. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.
4. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
5. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
6. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

_*The Last Supper*_
7. Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
8. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9. “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10. He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,
11. And say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
12. He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13. They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
15. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17. After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you.
18. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19. And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20. In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a]
21. But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
22. The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!”
23. They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

*MESSAGE:*

Jesus was to hold the Passover with His disciples before His crucifixion, so He directed Peter and John to "...go and prepare us the Passover, that we may eat" (v.cool. The two disciples asked Jesus a logical question; "...where will thou that we prepare" the Passover? Then Jesus gave them the guideposts for the urgent need of a venue for the Passover.

From the story above, we see that if we are committed to the will of God and the purpose of the "Passover", He will certainly provide all things necessary for the feast. Are you faced with a need or challenge? Involve Jesus! Ask Him where He wills that you prepare the 'Passover'; then you will see that once your need becomes an agenda before the table of heaven, whatever that need is, it shall be provided as predicted by Jesus.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, give me the direction and discernment to fulfil Your purpose for my life, *Amen!*

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 12TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* THE TRUE MEASURE OF GREATNESS

*TEXT:* LUKE 22: 24-38

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

24. And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
29. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30. That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35. And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

*MESSAGE:*

The disciples argued among themselves as to who was the greatest - they clamoured for rank and position! Then Jesus gave them the divinely acceptable measure of greatness in the kingdom: Whoever wants to be the greatest among you, shall be the servant of you all.

The quest for position is inherent in man. And worse still, that quest is now also in the church: People agitate for power, not because of their love for God but for personal gain. But the standard of Christ is simple: The yardstick for measuring greatness in the kingdom of God is the yardstick of serving the people of God in all sincerity and simplicity. Let us follow the pattern Jesus set for us: Genuine Christian service is the kingdom of God!

*PRAYER:*
Oh Lord, help me to serve You and Your people sincerely and in humility. *Amen.*

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 13TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* "...AND...THE COCK CREW"

*TEXT:* LUKE 22: 54-71

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

54. Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
55. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
56. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
57. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
58. And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
59. And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
60. And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
61. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
62. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
63. And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
64. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
65. And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
66. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67. Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71. And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

*MESSAGE:*

Jesus had told Peter that he, Peter, would deny Him. Instead of praying and asking God for help, Peter presumed that he could not deny Jesus for any reason. However, Peter denied Him three times.

Sometimes, we mistake presumption for faith. We forget that in the days of temptation, it is not our presumption that will deliver us but the grace of God. And we need to activate that grace by prayer, watchfulness and dependence on God. Are you facing a temptation or a trial? Watch and Pray! Depend on God. Cry for His help, for by strength shall no man prevail. The arm of flesh will fail you. If you fail to depend on God, the 'cock' will soon crow, and you will discover how flat you have fallen. Seek the Lord and receive His help today.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, deliver me from the sin of presumption and help me to watch and pray at all times. *Amen.*

*THEME:* PARTAKE RESPONSIBLY

*TEXT:* 1 CORINTHIANS 11: 23-29

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

23. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

*MESSAGE:*
In our text, we see divine emphasis on the need for a clear understanding of the mystery of Holy Communion, before partaking in it. This sacrament was instituted by God to illustrate the force of the New Covenant expressed in the Body and Blood of Jesus. So, each time we partake of the Holy Communion, we remember Christ's death: Its purpose and power.

How then should we approach the Holy Communion? We should do it with reverence, discernment and faith, trusting God to revalidate the force of Christ in our lives every time we partake of the Holy Communion. When we do, we will enjoy the power of the New Covenant expressed in the elements of the Holy Communion.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, help me to see the mystery of the Holy Communion. *Amen!*

*DATE:* FRIDAY, 15TH APRIL, 2022 _*{Good Friday}*_
*THEME:* ONE PERFECT SACRIFICE

*TEXT:* HEBREWS 10: 1-10

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

1. For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
2. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
3. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
4. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
8. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

*MESSAGE:*

The law was a shadow of the real thing to come and being a shadow, was deficient in that it could not make those presented perfect. The blood of bulls and goats could not take away their sins; it only covered them, therefore, they lived in constant remembrance of their sins.

But God had a Will and that Will is that we be purified by the offering of the body of Jesus - that one perfect sacrifice! Nothing else can atone for the sin of man. Some erroneously believe that through the sacrifice of their money, gifts and good works, they can appease God for their sins. No! Our sanctification must continually come from our faith and focus on the cross.

*PRAYER:*
Lord Jesus, thank You for offering Yourself once and for all for our redemption. Grant that we always draw strength from this costly sacrifice. *Amen.*

*DATE:* SATURDAY, 16TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* BELIEVE THE SCRIPTURE

*TEXT:* JOHN 2: 18-22

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

18. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
19. Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
20. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21. But he spake of the temple of his body.
22. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

MESSAGE:

Doubts and arguments are strong tools in the hands of Satan to stop any man from believing and exploring the truths of God's words. The Jewish authorities demanded that Jesus should perform a miracle to prove His legitimacy to do what He did in the temple and His 'claim' that the temple was His father's house. Jesus quickly presented to them the salvation plan - His death and resurrection as a sign, but they misunderstood Him, expecting a physical sign.

We do not need to see miracles before we believe God's words as recorded in the scripture. Just believe the invisible by faith and you will be amazed how the invisible controls everything we see around us.

*PRAYER:*
Lord Jesus, Your word is forever settled in heaven; help me to hold You by Your word in every situation of my life. *Amen.*

*THEME:* "WHILE THE KING SITTETH AT HIS TABLE..."

*TEXT:* SONGS OF SOLOMON 1: 9-2: 7

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

9. I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
10. Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
11 We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
12. While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
13. A bundle of myrrh is my wellbeloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
14. My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of En-gedi.
15. Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes.
16. Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
17. The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.

_*Songs of Solomon 2:7*_

1. I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.
He.
2. Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women.
She
3. Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
4. Let him lead me to the banquet halls and let his banner over me be love.
5. Strengthen me with raisins, refresh me with apples, for I am faint with love.
6. His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.
7. Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you, by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.

*MESSAGE:*

This is a song of expression of mutual love and intimacy two lovers share. This kind of intimacy can only come as a result of quality time spent together. In the process of spending quality time together, the couple could see only the alluring qualities they possessed.

As believers, the above is not different from the type of experience we should have on an individual basis, with Christ. Christ as the groom yearns for such an intimate fellowship with us - the bride. He does not fail to caress anyone that goes into the secret place, away from the glare and distraction of the world. It is expected that as we come to meet our king at the table (v.12), our perfume should fill the place with fragrance. The fragrance of righteousness, holiness, love, joy and peace bring us into a warm embrace with the lover of our soul.

*PRAYER:*
Thank You Lord for the love You have for me. Help me to love You day by day, thou lover of my soul. *Amen.*

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 19TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* THE LITTLE FOXES

*TEXT:* SONGS OF SOLOMON 2: 8-17

*BIBLE READING:* {NIV}

8. The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
9. My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
10. My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
11. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
12. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
13. The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
14. O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.
15. Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
16. My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.
17. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.

*MESSAGE:*
In our reading today, the lovers we read about yesterday go on to express their love which was already blooming. They could not do without seeing each other's faces and hearing each other's voices. However, they were quick to point out that the foxes could destroy what they cherished most. Our souls ought to be consumed with love for our master, to the extent that we cannot do without seeing His face - His blazing countenance at the place of prayer; and hearing Him speak to us as a friend to friends.

However, we must beware of the little foxes that come at the bloom of our vineyard. The foxes do not only feed on the grapes, they gnaw on the trunk, dig holes around it and expose the roots - they destroy the entire vine. The little foxes of pride, envy, prayerlessness and contempt dig holes around the trunk of our relationship with Jesus and destroy the once-blooming encounter, if not checked.

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, as I grow in my intimacy with You, help me to be mindful of the little foxes and destroy them before they destroy the love we share. *Amen.*

1. By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
2. I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
3. The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
4. It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
5. I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
6. Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?
7. Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.
8. They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
9. King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.
10. He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.
11. Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.

*MESSAGE:*

The lover in our text is awakened to the reality that the one she loved was no longer with her. One will begin to wonder what led to the disappearance of her lover whom she had shared wonderful affections with. She quickly goes into a frantic search for her lover, daring the odds - she is able to find the one she loved and vows never to let him go again!

We understood yesterday that there are little foxes that destroy our relationship with our bridegroom - Jesus Christ.

These little foxes can separate us from the love of our soul. Having realised this, it therefore lies on us to start early to search for Him in the place of repentance, confession and restitution, if need be. We must also be willing to clasp Him so tight to our bosom, and never to let go again. There is no point continuing on the journey of life if Jesus is missing in our lives; we must, just like Joseph and Mary, go back to 'Jerusalem' even if it will take us three days journey, in search of Him (Luke 2:41-46).

*PRAYER:*
Lord Jesus, I will never let You go, for there is none other that can take Your place in my life. *Amen.*

READ: SONGS OF SOLOMON 5: 2-6:3 (NKJV)

5:2. I sleep, but my heart is awake; [It is] the voice of my beloved! He knocks, [saying,] "Open for me, my sister, my love, My dove, my perfect one; For my head is covered with dew, My locks with the drops of the night."
3. I have taken off my robe; How can I put it on [again?] I have washed my feet; How can I defile them?
4. My beloved put his hand By the latch [of the door,] And my heart yearned for him.
5. I arose to open for my beloved, And my hands dripped [with] myrrh, My fingers with liquid myrrh, On the handles of the lock.
6. I opened for my beloved, But my beloved had turned away [and] was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
7. The watchmen who went about the city found me. They struck me, they wounded me; The keepers of the walls Took my veil away from me.
8. I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, That you tell him I [am] lovesick! THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM
9. What [is] your beloved More than [another] beloved, O fairest among women? What [is] your beloved More than [another] beloved, That you so charge us? THE SHULAMITE
10. My beloved [is] white and ruddy, Chief among ten thousand.
11. His head [is like] the finest gold; His locks [are] wavy, [And] black as a raven.
12. His eyes [are] like doves By the rivers of waters, Washed with milk, [And] fitly set.
13. His cheeks [are] like a bed of spices, Banks of scented herbs. His lips [are] lilies, Dripping liquid myrrh.
14. His hands [are] rods of gold Set with beryl. His body [is] carved ivory Inlaid [with] sapphires.
15. His legs [are] pillars of marble Set on bases of fine gold. His countenance [is] like Lebanon, Excellent as the cedars.
16. His mouth [is] most sweet, Yes, he [is] altogether lovely. This [is] my beloved, And this [is] my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem! THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM

6:1. Where has your beloved gone, O fairest among women? Where has your beloved turned aside, That we may seek him with you? THE SHULAMITE
2. My beloved has gone to his garden, To the beds of spices, To feed [his flock] in the gardens, And to gather lilies.
3. I [am] my beloved's, And my beloved [is] mine. He feeds [his flock] among the lilies. THE BELOVED

THE MESSAGE:

In our text today, we see the lover of the woman we have been reading about come calling on her to open for him to come in. However, she was already undressed and could not open for her lover who was drenched in the dew of the night. When she decided to open, her lover is already gone and her search for him is not without untoward experience. This is typical of our relationship with Jesus. He longs to come in to dine and fellowship with us. However, He does not impose Himself on us, rather He stands at the door and knocks: If anyone opens…. However, most times, we do not want Him to come and see our unclothedness.

We would rather continue to ‘cover up’ instead of allowing Him come and see us ‘undressed.’ This is far from what it ought to be; it is when our lives are bare before Him that He can help our weaknesses. There is never a life that opens up to Him that does not receive help. We must be careful so that it should not be said of us that when we finally open to Him, He would have been long gone!

PRAYER: Father, help me never again to cover up before Him who has the ability to help my weaknesses, but to always open up to Him.

✝TOPIC: HIS DESIRES ARE TOWARD ME

✝TEXT: Songs of Solomon 7:10-8:4(NKJV)

10. I [am] my beloved's, And his desire [is] toward me.
11. Come, my beloved, Let us go forth to the field; Let us lodge in the villages.
12. Let us get up early to the vineyards; Let us see if the vine has budded, [Whether] the grape blossoms are open, [And] the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love.
13. The mandrakes give off a fragrance, And at our gates [are] pleasant [fruits,] All manner, new and old, Which I have laid up for you, my beloved.
1. Oh, that you were like my brother, Who nursed at my mother's breasts! [If] I should find you outside, I would kiss you; I would not be despised.
2. I would lead you [and] bring you Into the house of my mother, She [who] used to instruct me. I would cause you to drink of spiced wine, Of the juice of my pomegranate. (TO THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM)
3. His left hand [is] under my head, And his right hand embraces me.
4. I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, Do not stir up nor awaken love Until it pleases. A RELATIVE

✝STUDY: Our scripture passage today goes on to express the affections shared by the two lovers who cherished the times spent together. They desired to be with each other. This typically exemplifies the type of friendship we are expected to enjoy with Jesus. His desires are always towards us and when our own desires meet with His, our appetite for the world and its glories will die, and we can thenceforth, live in the new creation realities.

✝ PRAYER: O Lord my God, there is no doubt your desires are toward me, help me to see nothing else in this world except you. Help me to also see everything through your own eyes, Amen!

✝️TOPIC: SET ME AS A SEAL UPON THINE HEART

✝️TEXT: Songs of Solomon 8:5-7(NKJV)
5. Who [is] this coming up from the wilderness, Leaning upon her beloved? I awakened you under the apple tree. There your mother brought you forth; There she [who] bore you brought [you] forth. THE SHULAMITE TO HER BELOVED
6. Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm; For love [is as] strong as death, Jealousy [as] cruel as the grave; Its flames [are] flames of fire, A most vehement flame.
7. Many waters cannot quench love, Nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love All the wealth of his house, It would be utterly despised. THE SHULAMITE's BROTHERS

✝️STUDY: Love is jealous and demands undivided commitment; love is strong and powerful and burns like a fire. Again, love cannot be drowned by flood and cannot be purchased with money. These are various attributes of love that should define the experience of anyone who is lost in the love of Christ.

We cannot claim to love Jesus but have little or no time for Him in the place of fellowship. We cannot be in love with Him but flout every of His command. There was never a man in love with Jesus that denied Him the pleasure of intimate relationship. He demands our all – “and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might” (Deuteronomy 6:5); nothing short of this suffices.

✝️ PRAYER: Help me dear Lord to love nothing else but you; let nothing else take your place in my life. Amen.

✝TOPIC: HOPE AGAINST HOPE

✝TEXT: Romans 4:13-25 (NKJV)
13. For the promise that he would be the heir of the world [was] not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14. For if those who are of the law [are] heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect,
15. because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law [there is] no transgression.
16. Therefore [it is] of faith that [it might be] according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
17. (as it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations"wink in the presence of Him whom he believed -- God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;
18. who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be."
19. And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb.
20. He did not waver orruptible man -- and birds and belief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21. and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
22. And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."
23. Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him,
24. but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25. who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.

STUDY: Abraham received the promise that he would be the heir of the world and he believed it. His belief was credited to him as righteousness; hence, it was not because of anything he did or would have done – just simple faith in what God had said. Though simple, faith must be ready to have hope in hopeless situations. Judging from his prevailing circumstances, Abraham would not have believed he could bear a child again, but because he trusted God whom he believed could raise the dead and call into existence things that were not, he staggered not at the promise but was strong in faith.

Now, the righteousness credited to Abraham as a result of his belief was not credited to him alone, but also to us once we believe in Him that raised Jesus Christ from death. Ours is just to believe that for our transgressions, He died on the cross and was raised for our justification – that simple! We should not depend on anything we think we can do.

✝ PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help me to always believe in you and what you can do, come what may. Help me to always trust in Your word, Amen!

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* MONDAY, 25TH APRIL, 2022
*THEME:* LET US GO AGAIN

*TEXT:* ACTS 15: 35-41

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

35. Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
36. And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.
37. And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.
38. But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
39. And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;
40. And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.
41. And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

*MESSAGE:*

Paul and Barnabas, together with many others were preaching and teaching the word of God at Antioch when Paul saw a need to visit people, they had preached to in other cities so as to ascertain how they were faring. This is both a challenge and a call for us Christians to be about our Master's business. It was stated clearly that they were teaching and preaching the word of the Lord; not the philosophies of man nor the mysteries of the world. This commitment to preach the word had taken them to different cities and places.

This should apply to us: We have a challenge to go back to individuals/churches/communities/cities that we have preached in, to find out how they are faring. So many times, some of the works we do in preaching the word to people, more often than not, are overgrown with weeds and need to be weeded again and again. A 'hit-and-run' approach will not suffice if we must disciple those we reach out to with the word. Let us go again!

*PRAYER:*
Lord I want to be about my Father's business. Grant me grace to do this with diligence and the sense of urgency it demands. *Amen*

*THEME:* THEY SAW AND BELIEVED

*TEXT:* JOHN 20: 1-10

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
2. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
4. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
5. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
6. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
7. And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
8. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
9. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
10. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

*MESSAGE:*

From our text, it is quite unfortunate that the disciples of Jesus were not quick to grasp the whole picture of what Jesus was relating to them. They had been with Jesus but their understanding of the mission and purpose of His ministry was shallow. They were not expecting the resurrection, hence, the reaction of first, Mary Magdalene and thereafter, Peter and John; until John saw evidence and believed that He had risen.

The resurrection reality is the anchor of our faith and the hope of the salvation of the whole world. If Jesus had just stopped at the point of dying with our sins without rising again to newness of life, then the Christian faith would have had little or no meaning. But the resounding truth is that He died with our sins and rose together with us unto a victorious life. Alleluia!

*PRAYER:*
Thank You Lord Jesus for dying and rising again far the remission of my sins and for my justification. Help me to always live in the knowledge of this. *Amen.*

*TEXT:* JOHN 20: 11-18

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

11. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12. And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
15. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
16. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
18. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

*MESSAGE:*

While Peter and John left for their homes, Mary Magdalene stayed back, crying at the 'disappearance' of Jesus' corpse. Sincerely ignorant, she continued searching for whosoever that 'stole' the body of Jesus so that she could continue to attend to the body. This level of love and commitment does not go unrewarded. Jesus called her by her first name and she quickly recognised the voice of her Master. She became the first to see the risen Lord.

It is good to know that Jesus knows each of us by name. He calls us by our names and we recognise His voice and follow Him (John 10:27). It is just like a shepherd calling out to his flock. However, this experience is directly related to how close we are to Him. Just in the same way that a sheep that is trailing behind the Master may not hear the voice of the shepherd, so also a Christian following from afar will not hear the voice of the Master. An undistracted love for the Master will always take us to a place of intimate relationship and communion with Him, and from this standpoint, we can hear every 'beat' of His heart and respond accordingly.

*PRAYER:*
Lord, let my search for You not end at the surface; drive me to a place of deeper search - to the secret place, for therein is Your hiding place. *Amen.*

✝TOPIC: BE NOT FAITHLESS

✝TEXT: John 20:19-31 (NKJV)

19. Then, the same day at evening, being the first [day] of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace [be] with you."
20. When He had said this, He showed them [His] hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21. So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
22. And when He had said this, He breathed on [them,] and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
23. "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the [sins] of any, they are retained."
24. Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
26. And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!"
27. Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand [here,] and put [it] into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
28. And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
29. Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed [are] those who have not seen and [yet] have believed."
30. And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;
31. but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

✝STUDY: In today’s text, Jesus appears before His disciples to strengthen, encourage and commission them. However, Thomas is not with them when Jesus appeared and he doubted their ‘claim’ until, according to him, he would see and feel Him by himself. Jesus appears again to clear the doubt arising from His own very fold. This is because if the larger society must believe the account of the resurrection, then the harbingers of the story must be clear and certain about it in the first place. Thomas did not need to see before believing; he was to believe with the eyes of faith – for this is the basis of Christianity.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for… (Heb. 11:1). It is no longer faith if we can only agree when we see the full manifestation; it is no longer faith when we need to see a miracle before associating it with the finger of God. Others may dwell at this level of faithlessness but we are called unto a higher ground. Abraham had hope against hope, nothing was there to point that what he expected would come to pass but he still believed, not staggering at the promise; and it was imputed to him for righteousness (Rom. 4:22). Be not faithless!

✝ PRAYER: Dear Lord, may you forgive and help my unbelief. Give me grace to always hold you by your word – for it must surely come to pass.

*THEME:* I GO A FISHING

*TEXT:* JOHN 21: 1-14

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
8. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
12. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
14. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

*MESSAGE:*

After the death of Jesus, Peter decided to go back to fishing and the others followed him. They were going to catch fish instead of men; they were going back to their past life from which Jesus had called them (Matt. 4:19). The call of Jesus to follow Him, is not a situation-dependent one -to keep following so far as the ship is sailing smoothly and to quit once there is a tempest. Little wonder Jesus Himself instructed that we should count the cost of discipleship before taking the first step (Luke 14:26-33). The Apostles were not sure of this way again, and were careful not to 'waste' away, so they decided to go back to their former ways. It was a fruitless journey because they did not go with the owner of heaven and earth.

Leaving the way of following Jesus is an express ticket to the desert fields of the world, full of activities but ending in futility and doom (Matt. 7:13-14). Jesus enjoins us to take the yoke upon us for they are easy. Sometimes, the road may seem so strait, full of uncertainties but He has bid us to come that we may find rest both in this life and in that to come (Matt. 11:28-30).

*PRAYER:*
Father, help me to keep following and never to quit, for to whom shall I go if I depart from you?

*THEME:* DO YOU LOVE ME?

*TEXT:* JOHN 21: 15-19

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

15. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
18. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
19. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

*MESSAGE:*

Jesus asked Peter three times whether he really loved Him; to the point that Peter became angry at the repeated questions. In any case, there was a serious burden in the heart of the Master - who would shepherd the flock He was leaving behind? Peter had in a couple of hours earlier failed the acid test: He had led the people back to fishing.
Jesus knew that wherever our affection is, our commitment must as a matter of fact, be there. Love for Him would change our worldview so also love for the world would estrange us from Him. Our commitment to obeying God's word, contending for the faith, being at the post of service and loving other brethren are all directly related to the amount of love for Jesus that has consumed our hearts.

It is important to note that this type of love is borne out of experiential knowledge of His personality. We must have heard Him, seen His glory with our eyes, looked upon His mercies and handled His benevolence, to enter this realm of love (1 John 1:1). And no man climbs this height of sublime love and denies His Master the desired undivided attention.

*PRAYER:*
Help me to love You dearest Lord, because Thou art my God and my most loving King. *Amen.*

32. And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also [of] David and Samuel and the prophets:
33. who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34. quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35. Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
36. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
37. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented --
38. of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, [in] dens and caves of the earth.
39. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise,
40. God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

12:1. Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares [us,] and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2. looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of [our] faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

✝STUDY: Many of the witnesses referred to in verse 1 of Hebrews 12 are listed in Chapter 11. Many more are listed in one or more of the 66 Books of the Bible. A lot more are listed in the “Lamb’s Book of Life” (Rev. 20:12-15). Are you in the updated version of that list? One characteristic of these witnesses is that they lived and died by faith.

A key aspect of living by faith is to “lay aside every weight” or sin which easily entangles us. What are the habits or lifestyles that could constitute “weights” in your life? Are they similar to those indicated in Song of Songs 2:15; Judges 16:1, 4; Proverbs 20:1; Titus 1:12? Mention others common in our environment. In Matthew 13:22, we see that “cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches” are “weights” that can “choke the word of God” and make the Christian unfruitful. Can you identify other “weights” that are hindering you from “running the race set before us?” (Heb. 12:1; Matt. 13:22). We can “lay aside these weights” by letting Christ into our hearts (Rev. 3:20). When we do this, we then receive a new birth and power to live for Him (2 Cor. 5:17; John 1:12; Col. 3:16).

✝ PRAYER: Turn Psalm 139 23:24 into a heartfelt prayer.

*DATE:* MONDAY, 2ND MAY, 2022 _*{St. Philip's and St. St. James the Apostles}*_
*THEME:* COUNT IT ALL JOY

*TEXT:* JAMES 1:1-12

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10. But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
12. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

*MESSAGE:*

It is natural to rejoice when there is victory, success, promotion and the like. But our text shows that a Christian should rejoice even when there are troubles, temptations, hardships or challenges. Philippians 4:4 urges every child of God to rejoice in the Lord always, no matter the prevailing circumstances. Our Lord Jesus Christ suffered many hardships and difficulties, yet He remained calm and became victorious (Matt. 27:27-31).

The first apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for the name of Jesus (Acts 5:41). Paul also suffered greatly, but counted it all joy (2 Cor. 11:23-25). Are you facing any serious challenge or hard times? Ask God for wisdom to take appropriate actions (v.5). Pray in faith, and God will answer you (v.6).

*PRAYER:*
Unto thee O Lord, do I lift up my soul (Psalm 25:1).

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 3RD MAY, 2022
*THEME:* REDEEMED WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 1:13-25

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

13. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
18. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21. Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
22. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

*MESSAGE:*
Our text reminds us that we have been redeemed with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (vv. 18-19). As a result, there must be a clear departure from our former lifestyles. This former lifestyle was lived in lust, ignorance and sin, following human traditions (vv. 14, 18). This old lifestyle leads to condemnation and eternal death (Rom. 6:23). In contrast, the new lifestyle is a life of obedience to God, holiness and love (w. 15, 22-23).

This new lifestyle leads to many blessings here on earth, and ultimately eternal life (Deut. 28:1 -2; v. 9). Let us therefore turn fully to God without going back. Let all old things (sins, evil habits and the like) pass away, and let all become new (v. 13; 2 Cor. 5:17).

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, please help me to be holy, as You are holy. *Amen.*

*THEME:* A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 2:1-10

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

*MESSAGE:*

As Christians, we have been called out of darkness into God's marvellous light (v.9). Those who are still in darkness live in malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and evil-speaking among others (v.1). Other works of darkness are mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21. Please make sure that you are not associated with any of these today. In contrast, those who are in God's light are "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people" (v.9).

They desire the word of God just as new born babies desire milk, and this helps them to grow (v.2). In this way, they are built up as a spiritual house and their prayers are spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God (v.5). They are pilgrims on earth, and their fleshly lusts have been crucified with Christ (vv. 11 - 12; Gal. 2:20).

*PRAYER:*
Thank You Lord for enabling me to be a part of this royal priesthood. Please help me never to go back in Jesus' name, *Amen.*

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 5TH MAY, 2022
*THEME:* IN HIS STEPS

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 2:11-25

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

11. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14. Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16. As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

*MESSAGE:*

Our ultimate aim as Christians is to be like Jesus - to walk in His steps while we are here on earth, and to share His glory in heaven (v.21; Phil. 3:10; 1 John 3:2). Consequently, we should see ourselves as temporary residents on earth, living above fleshly lusts and every evil conduct indulged in by others (v.12). This may bring us into conflict with others, and may lead to suffering. But as Jesus patiently endured suffering for doing good, when necessary, we too should not waiver when standing for Christ though it brings some hardship (vv. 20-21; Matt. 10:25). Like Jesus, we should not return evil for evil, but trust God who is the righteous judge (v.23). Read Phil. 2:5-11 for other Christlike attitudes we are encouraged to emulate.

In verses 13 to 17, we are encouraged to submit ourselves to human governments at each level where we operate. This is easy when the king (President) or his representative is good and gentle. Even when he is corrupt or wicked as we find in Africa and other developing countries, we should still be good ambassadors of Christ (v.18; 2 Cor. 5:20). The simple rule in all situations is to "fear God and honour the king" (v.17; Matt. 22:21; Acts 5:29).

*PRAYER:*
Turn this hymn into prayer, _Keep step with the Master, whatever betide,_

TOPIC: INCORRUPTIBEL BEAUTY

✝️TEXT: 1 Peter 3:1 – 12 (NKJV)

1. Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,

2. when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.

3. Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—

4. rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

5. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,

6. as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

7. Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

8. Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;

9. not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

10. For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.

11. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.

12. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

✝️️STUDY: Today’s reading opens with an admonition to the Christian wife to maintain an inner beauty that never fades away. While it does not condemn the wearing of good clothes and other external adornments, it is more profitable for the Christian woman to pay greater attention to the development of good character as all “holy women” have done. They should obey their own husbands and be submissive to them.

In this way, even unbelieving husbands could be drawn to Christ through the good conduct of their wives. We should avoid being like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but are filled with impurities on the inside (Matt. 23:27).In verse 7, we see that the incorruptible beauty of the husband should be evident through his cordial relationship with his wife. He should show understanding to his wife in all areas, especially in her weaknesses! Verse 9 reinforces the example of Christ in 1 Peter 2:23 that we should not repay evil for evil! In what practical ways can we have compassion for one another and even bless those who revile us? (vv. 8 – 9).

✝️ PRAYER: Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me, All His wondrous compassion and purity, O that Spirit divine, All my nature refine, Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.

TOPIC: SANCTIFY THE LORD!

✝️TEXT: 1 Peter 3:13–22 (NKJV)

13. And who [is] he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?
14. But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, [you are] blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled."
15. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always [be] ready to [give] a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
16. having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.
17. For [it is] better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
18. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
19. by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
20. who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while [the] ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
21. There is also an antitype which now saves us -- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22. who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

✝️️STUDY: Read verse 15 of our text in different translations to get a better understanding of what it means to “sanctify the Lord in your hearts.” In this context, it could mean to praise or worship or honour the Lord or give him a prime place in our hearts. Serving God in this way obviously means living a life of righteousness. This is often evident through good works and good conduct. But such righteous living may bring suffering, threats, and the like from powers that be. Should this happen, verses 14 and 17 show that it is better to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. Christ also suffered to save us, and he bore it gladly (v.18). Having won the victory, He received a name that is above every other name, and all authorities in heaven and on earth and everywhere else are under Him (v.22; Phil. 2:9-11).

If we suffer for His sake, we should also reign with Him (2 Tim. 2:11-12).As we sanctify the Lord in our hearts, people may raise several questions about our righteous lifestyles and hope in Christ (v.15). We should respond to such questions calmly and without any shame (Rom. 1:16). Like Paul during his defence before King Agrippa, we could even use such opportunities for evangelism (Acts 26:28-29).

✝️ PRAYER: Lord, I present myself afresh to you, as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable (Rom. 12: 1-2).

*DATE:* MONDAY, 8TH MAY, 2022
*THEME:* LIVING TO PLEASE GOD

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 4:1-11

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
4. Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
6. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9. Use hospitality one to another without grudging..
10. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

*MESSAGE:*

Many people live to please themselves or in line with the traditions of their peer group, community or circle of friends. They may therefore find themselves deep in "lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries” (v.3). Many of us once lived like that before we accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour (Eph. 2:1-3). Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-21).

But God's will for us is that we please Him all the days of our lives (vv. 2, 6). Every aspect of our lives, including our words and actions, should give glory to God (v. 11). Christ has already paid the price, and all that we need to please God are available to us through Him (vv. 1, 11). May we therefore determine to please God daily.

*PRAYER:*
O God, help me to please You in all I say or do every day in Jesus' name, *Amen.*

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 10TH MAY, 2022
*THEME:* PARTAKERS OF CHRIST'S SUFFERINGS & GLORY

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 4:12-29

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

12. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
15. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
16. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18. And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19. Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

*MESSAGE:*

God has given us exceedingly great and precious promises that include participation in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). This will be fully made manifest when Christ returns, because then we shall see Him as He is, and we shall be like Him (1 John 3:2). In the meantime, as we live our lives on earth, Christ's nature in us moves us to live pure and holy lives (2 Cor. 5:4). This nature and the resulting lifestyle are contrary to the prevailing worldly system, resulting in conflict with the world as well as persecution, trials and the like (Gal. 5:17).

If suffering, hardship or difficulty comes to a Christian because of his righteous lifestyle resulting from his faith, he should not be surprised (v, 12). Indeed, he should rejoice as the apostles did (vv. 13-14; Acts 5:41). Many saints of old also suffered for their faith (Hebrews 11:35-38). And Jesus told us that we may experience persecution like Him (Matt. 10:24-25; 24:9; John 15:20). Verse 15 cautions us to make sure we never suffer as evildoers. Are you currently passing through a hardship, challenge or difficulty because of your faith in Christ? Cheer up! Don't give up. May the Lord send you help as He did for the apostles (Acts 5:17-20).

*PRAYER:*
Dear Lord, please deliver us from all evil in Jesus' name, *Amen*

*TEXT:* 1 PETER 5:1-14

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3. Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4. And when the chief Shepherd shall
appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9. Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12. By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13. The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
14. Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

*MESSAGE:*

Patterns of exemplary Christian living for elders, youths and others, are set forth in this passage. An elder, such as a priest, pastor, parent, teacher or mentor, should care for those placed under him by God. This should not be done grudgingly, or because of possible material benefits but because of Christ who is the Great Shepherd and ultimate rewarder (vv. 1- 4). Elders should not lord it over the flock, exploit them or take undue advantage of them. As the Good Shepherd, Christ ensured that none of those given to Him was lost (John 17:12). Paul followed this example (Acts 20:18-21,27-28, 32-35).

Be an exemplary elder, not a hireling (John 10:11-13). In verse 5, youths, and indeed all of us, are encouraged to submit to our elders and to one another. This should be done in humility and out of reverence for Christ (Eph. 5:21). Since God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble, we should be models of humility. Verses 8-10 emphasise the need for vigilance against the devil's efforts to "devour" the Christian. The key to victory is to "resist the devil" and stand firm in the faith (v.9; James 4:7).

*PRAYER:*
O God, help me to be a good example to believers in my faith and conduct in Jesus' name. *Amen.* (1 Tim. 4:12)

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 12TH MAY, 2022
*THEME:* LET US GO TO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

*TEXT:* PSALM 122: 1-9

*BIBLE READING:* {KJV}

1. I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

2. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

3. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:

4. Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord.

5. For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

6. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.

7. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

8. For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

9. Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.

*MESSAGE:*

The Psalmist here expresses great joy at the invitation to go to the house of the Lord. During the time of David, the major 'House of the Lord' was in Jerusalem, which was also the seat of government. Every mature Israelite male was required to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem at least three times a year, especially during the major feasts (Exod. 34:23). Jesus often went to Jerusalem during those periods (John 5: 1). The Lord's house is a place of worship, preaching, teaching, as well as thanksgivings, prayers and intercessions (vv. 4, 7). In John 4: 21-24, Jesus showed that God could be worshipped anywhere. What matters is that those who worship God must do so in spirit and truth.

Each of us needs to take part in building the 'House of the Lord' around us, and also inviting others to come into it. This could be done through active evangelism at individual or group levels. As the Psalmist prayed for the peace of Jerusalem, let us all pray for and work towards establishing and maintaining strong and effective centres for the propagation of the gospel throughout our land. This should begin from our homes.

*PRAYER:*
O Lord, let there be peace within our land, and prosperity within our borders (v. 7).

TOPIC: SING TO THE LORD A NEW SONG

✝️TEXT: Psalm 96:1-3 (NKJV)

1. Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
2. Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.

✝️️STUDY: The Psalmist here invites each one of us to sing a new song to the Lord. The reasons for singing, the content of the song, and the manner of singing it are highlighted in the text. Verses 4-6 show about 6 reasons why we should praise God: Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised (v.4).

The Lord created the heavens, while what people call “gods” are really man-made idols (v.5). Can you itemise the others? The content of the new song to the Lord consists of words declaring who God is, what He does and His supremacy over all. These declarations are to be accompanied with offerings and various forms of worship (vv. 7-9). The heavens and the earth with its vegetation and the seas are invited to participate in this universal worship (vv. 11-13; Psalm 19:1).Let us learn to praise God at all times and under all circumstances. Let us praise Him when we are at the mountain top and all things are bright and beautiful, and also when we “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4).

✝️ PRAYER: O God, I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
