LadyT:

Theres different levels of prostrating.  You would not go flat to the ground in a market neither would I knee fully in a market.  My darling Ndipe dont get carried away!

You can easily do a semi prostate if the situation demands it or I do a semi knee our elders are not deraged to think you would lie down flat in the middle of a market.

Why adopt a half hearted measure instead of going the whole nine yards as dictated by tradition?
Re: He refused to Prostrate as Yoruba culture demands by oyinda3(f): 1:52am On Jul 30, 2009
ndipe are you yoruba?

the whole 9 yards vs casual greeting depends on circumstances undecided
the way u'll greet obama when u see him will be different from the way u greet your dad when he comes back from work not so? does that mean one is half hearted?

Oh well, what will you say of female circumcision? Practise it, because it's part of our culture?
Ndipe, I don't see the bridge that connects female circumcision to prostrating.  The former is a criminalistic action; a heinous crime that should be outdated.  The latter is simply a way of saluting your elders.   One is an involuntary bloodshed and is usually done without your consent, while the other is voluntary, requires no bloodshed or forceful action.  If you choose not to prostrate you choose to walk away without a bride, simple as that.  We don't always have to feed our culture to the dogs in favor of the white man's overglorified approach to life.

i'm not going to lie. i don't see anything wrong with the act of prostrating. the only thing i don't agree with is the purpose  undecided yea u might say western style is glorified but if left to make my own choice i'd rather take the western style than the naija or chinese style. not that respecting adults is not bad but we take things too far our culture is sooo anti-youth and elders are elevated to god-like levels. imagine ur not even allowed to look an adult in the eye in some cultures. and then we say we have a hard time producing leaders.
still i don't find anything wrong with prostrating or kneeling or whatever but all these excessive reverence for adults can be sickening. i kno i don't want youngins prostrating or kneeling or bowing down to me when i'm old. respect is good but i dun like all that excess.

if wot u're trying to say is that since to them the definition of respect is to prostrate then u'll prostrate but to u respect means something diff then i agree wiv u!

yea u get the idea. i mean that prostrating alongside many of other traditions we have in naija (ex calling someone who's only 2-3 yrs older than u aunty or uncle etc) are just a part of the general emphasis on respect we have in our culture. i think this respect is excessive and not very conducive for development. everything should be in moderation

this is actually a quite pointless and unnecessary display of "respect".

People take it to the extreme sometimes.

The connection is that coercion is involved in both practices. I know yoruba people whose parents force them to prostrate to every single 'elder' they make acquaintance with, family member or not. some of these so-called elders don't even deserve the respect. That's why some do it anyway(prostrate) and still talk shit about the person. Last time I checked, culture shouldn't be forced on someone. One should voluntarily embrace it, that's the only way it can be sincere.

I agree that the two are stupid for not discussing that before hand but maybe the girl in question isn't making a big deal of it, maybe it's just the parents.
Re: He refused to Prostrate as Yoruba culture demands by C2H5OH(f): 7:12pm On Jul 30, 2009
I can see where you're going with that. Drawing a parallel between the two is far-fetched and absurd - my opinion. The form of coercion you just mentioned takes place all the time among parents and their children. You know there are always times as a kid you don't want to do something but your parents force you to. If an american male child says "whassup fool" to his father while greeting him, I would expect him to rebuke the child and deal with him severally. Even if he doesn't discipline him, it's within his obligation as a parent to show him a "proper" more-polite way of greeting - maybe a "hi dad, hello dad," something like that. For the Yoruba people asking you to prostrate or kneel down is how that respect is shown to those who are your elders.

The point is that as a a grown ass adult, you would get to decide who/not to prostrate or get on your knees to greet. If you don't feel like it's a custom you want to continue then stop it. Just know that those elders will have a bad image of you in their minds. As long as you don't care then it doesn't matter. Your stroke, your choice.
