New update:

firmware 2.0 is hardly off the ground and yet Apple is seeding 2.1 plus a new SDK for devs.

they say it upgrades the GPS and location awareness of the phone, meaning probably turn by turn navigation ala Garmin and Tomtom is around the corner.

well, that wont matter much, because i don't plan to get lost anytime soon.

there are also snippets of code that point at a possible clipboard, meaning copy-paste is coming to iphone.

hello people,
I'm going 2 ask a question thts possibly very naive!

i just got the 3G iphone and obviously, it is locked to the O2 network. can it be unlocked to go with other sim networks,
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 11:48am On Jul 26, 2008
for now, no. Apple rewired the exploitable stuff but Geohot and the Devteam are working hard to beat that. meanwhile stick with the Official Carrier pending an unlock solution.

or downgrade your hardware to a first-gen iphone and upgrade to 2.0 and enjoy the benefits of the 3G iphone sans GPS and 3G with any carrier of your choice.

Finally did the upgrade to 2.0. Seems nice so far, hope i don't get the battery life issues you had?
Neoteny, will send you that stuff later today.
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 8:01pm On Jul 27, 2008
yay, tezz. thanks. meanwhile my sis doesnt like 2.0, says she lost her prada in school and now wants her iphone back. will have to upgrade mine.

heres a neat trick i discovered while tinkering. its for those on 1.1.4:

besides using wifi on installer the only other way to upload apps on iphone is to SSH into /Applications, upload the app and set permissions to 755, right?

well, no more. ive been having problems with SSH, so i decided to use ispazio pc suite to upload a zipped file of cracked apps i got (pool, pocket money, showtime, video recorder etc) from piratebay. well, i created a new folder for each app, uploaded the contents of the downloaded app folder, and set the created folder permission to the following:

owner: read, write, execute

group: read, execute

everyone: read, execute

it gives you a purview of 755, restart your phone and bingo!

if you upload without setting permission to 755, the app will open, then close back to springboard without launching

whats the implication of this? you can save your /Applications folder and upload back after a restore, all you need is just to install ibrickr fix.

you can also swap apps by backing up the folder and uploading, or download from the net and install without fiddling with installer, SSH, or wifi/
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 5:55pm On Jul 28, 2008
that "trick" isn't very reliable, and u can't always simply backup Application folder and think everything is uhuru (even though i did that earlier this year and used the backup to quickly transfer all the apps on my phone to other phones essentially creating an image). the reason it doesn't always work is several of the apps also place configuration files (plist files) somewhere in the /System path. without the plist files in the required paths, the app crashes back to springboard on launch as happens anytime the app is not properly setup. 1 in particular (i think IntelliSense) even put files in several other paths. the "trick" only works for simple apps. & even worse, the installed apps will not show up in Installer as installed when you install them using this shortcut method (it's like installing a windows app without putting the app info in the windows registry).
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 6:03pm On Jul 28, 2008
granted it may not work for all apps, but then plists in /system are generated after certain settings are effected or you set prefs. that requires you launching the app first. a virgin app will almost always launch.

apps that keep components in databases are the trickier ones, eg ebook readers, games etc or apps that keep components in strings, not plists (which is just xml). but once you know where to look its a simple matter knwing the path and recreating one.

for example, i copied the quran app and placed it in the other iphone. then i copied the db from /private/var/root/Library/Quran and recreated the quran folder at the end of the path to contain the database. i worked, as did every single app i downloaded. they used to crash without setting 755 but now they run.

guess what, almost every app already contains its plist files along with the pngs and stuff in the.app folder.

and sice installer didnt install them why should they show up? there were not cached. to remove them i simply use pc suite to delete the folder. infact, this metod does away with installer's repo info which eat space.

and really, putting trick in double quotes is demeaning. people still use secure shell to do what i did, and setting permission is something i never knew i could do with pc suite. since it eliminates the need for SSH it IS a trick irrespective of your condescending snorts.

Easy there, man.
Anyway, i've been using iPhone PC suite for all my uploads. Yesterday was the first time i ever used SSH, and i cannot believe it took me so damn long.
Usually after the PC suite upload, i set permissions with Mobile FInder or Squid.

Meanwhile, the Monkeyball worked! Saved me $9.99. Also there's a cracked version of crash bandicoot nitro kart. so that's $9.99 wasted.
So far, 2.0 has been stable, but i miss my iSMS pretty bad.

no offense there, man. its cool.

@texazzpete

im redownloading 2.0 firmware, my external HD crashed, and the weather here is messing up my bandwidth. its moving at 40kbps. turkey!

to set permissions with pc suite just right click the app folder, but then you are on 2.0.

my 1.1.4 16 gigs im planning to upgrqade 2day crashed lastnight, i just rebooted after springboard froze (was playing yeti3d using accelerometer control) when i hit home. after the Apple logo it went ionto Shell, showing time limits on Apple marvel commands. i thought of using terminal to forcekick it into booting but the mac wont see the phone. it took me all night to get DFU and had to restore to 1.1.4. ON WINDOWS! now im using pc suite to return my apps.

heard of neverball? its a free clone of the crossplatform neverball ported to iphone/touch. its a lot like monkeyball. currently its on 1.1.4. but in process of being put up for free in appstore. google it.

i don't know dude, my fave  (religious) apps are not on apstore (quran, ipray, imoon, ieathalal etc) ecept iquran, thats why im hedging. i also want simport. im  dying for installer 4.

here is a screenie of the shell my phone ended in. its blurry, took it with the other iphone and you know that 2mp is nonsense in dim light.
its saying that OIIpodUSB cannot be started, needs configuration. and retry limit=15

but its fixed now. took me all night.

There's an option to import SIM contacts by default in 2.0. it's in Settings, under Contacts etc.

So no need for SIMport!

I've tried neverball. it controls like Shyte, and it's a poor man's version of SMB. Now that SMB can be gotten for 'free', i see no need for Neverball.

hey! just remembered i still have TurboSim. maybe it'll work on 3G. if only that yeye boi can get his paws on one. ps: my sis wont let me have another go at her 2.0, wants her apps back (shes kindy deeply pious too, but i suspect iWoman has soemthing to do with it *wink wink*)

Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 4:29pm On Jul 31, 2008
u miss the importance of Installer. if the installed apps don't show up as installed in Installer, how then do u go about updating the apps? it all gets real messy that u end up reinstalling the apps through Installer again just to get them registered as installed.

xsellize have a HUGE collection of cracked Appstore apps. Even though i've promptly downloaded loads of them, i feel kinda sad. Piracy may harm the chances of some cool stuff appearing on the appstore

. . .Nah! Them developers will still make money. Downloading more now. . .

PS: Just read that the Nokia N6 doesn't have 3d hardware graphics acceleration.

WTF?! Are they on crack? ngage store is sure to lose ground to Appstore now. I mean, most devs will focus on software render games for the Ngage platform now, and they'll suffer in side-by-side comparison to the iPhone

still flogging that dead horse? i have no idea why you and i keep going back and forth on some very very arcane things but i can only pray doing so reveals something worthwhile.

i DID NOT miss the importace of installer, why should i? that was the whole point of jailbreaking and without native apps the iphone wouldnt have been so cool since to me webapps are, on the scale of usability, right up there with snake oil.

however i did not propose a replacement for installer (even Cydia failed to do that), just an alternative method of doing backups, transfers, or a bit of sharing without dropcopy. and i did concede that not all apps work by that metod.

now, can we move on please!!

texazzpete:

they did blah a lot of hot air way back when the N95 was on the drawing board about hardware acceleration and a scaled down D3D and OpenGl ES for some of their phones on the 3rd edition platform and yet they only imlemented a watered down  OpenGl ES which talks to hardware emu. everyone tought they'd be first to market 3D accelerated devices with hardware rendering, but cupertino beat them. but then, symbian is not reaaly cut out for 3D pixel pushig without making some tough hardware choices.

sometimes i thought the concept of the Appstore was something lying on some sort of peripheral visual threshold on nokia's part; symbian, given its vast library, could have seen the first centralized appstore but sadly all we got was a link to Nokia Marketplace.

what do you think Android could do to one-up iphone OS X? 3D rendering on hardware? a free apstore clone for community apps? open filesystem at root level to totally own the phone and modify it from the bottom up (change the homescreen, certain system API's and header files for a radically different interface created by the community etc?

soemtimes i fear open source.
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 12:29pm On Aug 02, 2008
Wot's there 2 fear about open-source?

I can imagine some dudes coming up with a way to make Android work on the iPhone as well. But anyway, the real reason other OSes should worry is that Android is coming from Google. They have enough leverage to replicate their success in the computer/internet arena in the cellphone/internet arena.

Pete, i don't get this: "Piracy may harm the chances of some cool stuff appearing on the appstore".

im sure there are a few iphone things YOU would have preferred done differently, or perhaps be empowered with the ability to change it.

they say you can do that with Android. community can be a powerful thing.

anyway, heres john carmack saying this:

" Carmack says iPhone is "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined"

"Speaking at QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas this week, id Software co-founder Carmack praised Apple's iPhone as an emerging force in mobile gaming industry and revealed his firm to be working on two titles for the handset.

Unlike most mobile platforms where gaming is largely brand-driven due to smaller screens, storage constrains and limited marketing flexibility, the iPhone offers a rare opportunity for game publishers to deliver graphics rich titles supported by detailed textual descriptions on the App Store, he said during a press conference.

The gaming icon admitted that he's disappointed id has yet to ship a game for the iPhone, but said two tentative titles are now well in the works. One was described as a 'conventional mobile game,' while the second was said to be more ambitious in that it will test the limits of the iPhone's graphics capabilities.

While Carmack sees graphics memory as a potential limiting factor on the iPhone, he's stoked about the intuitiveness of the iPhone SDK. He also described the handset's hardware as equivalent to that of the Sega Dreamcast living room console, and almost on par with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's original Xbox.

When it comes to portable gaming systems, the iPhone is 'more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined,' he added. Apple's revenue sharing deal that offers developers 70 percent of the sale price was also cited as a plus."

Scratch that. the Appstoe is a money printer. The maker of 2 Across (39th most downloaded software on Appstore) is making about $1800 daily. Not bad for a crossword puzzle app that's been out for only a week or so. Do we dare imagine what Crash Kart has made?

@neoteny
pool is out on Appstore. I just grabbed it off the usual sources. Also Bookshelf seems like an excellent book reader, easily better than Books.app in terms of sheer compatibility.
No reason to hold back anymore, man.

Well Carmarck is pretty well respected as a guy able to squeeze out the best from any device. if he says he can do it, then we'll expect great result!

carmack is almost always the first to comment on any new hardware and be believed. as a man who knows his 3D he is greatly respected in the tech community and his word is almost gospel to the gaming throng.

Macworld 2009 will floor a lot of people, but the real killer is Macworld 2010.

why?

the latest granted Apple patents in the us patent office as unearthed by MacLife: Apple Mac Tablet (like the newton) but will run OSX Snow Leopard and will sport multitouch and stylus input with no hardware button.

Apple Touch Keyboards, with no buttons but a inteligent touchscreen that mimics conventional keyboard layouts with the added ability to adapt itself to whatever app you are using,

iphone mini with a transparent two-way flip screen. a new ipod touch, revamped iphone with a radical new interface and design.

and of course, a new Macbook series wit something apple claims will revolutioize PC hardware under the hood, probably coming in 2009.

@texazzpete

winpwn 2.0.0.3 and pwnage tool 2.01 keep telling me the iphone 1,1_2.0_5a347 restore.ipsw is unknown (winpwn) or invalid (pwnage).

ive downloaded 2 already, both 218mb from

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4956.20080710.V50OI/iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

and iphone1,2_2.0_5A347_restore (which is for iphone 3G) from

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4956.20080710.V50OI/iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

but only the 3G fw is recognized by both tools, and i can't use that on a 2g phone. i used a download manager and after md5 checksum in Terminal i found that the hash does not match the one posted in iphone-hackz. that means my Dl manager fukked up my download. im now downloading an alkready customized fw from

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4305453/iThor__s_iPhone_2.0_Custom_Firmware_Vanilla_(5A347)

its a torrent with like 122 leechers so understandably its slow as molasses.

have already pwned and neutered the phone, on bl 4.6.

or perhaps you can CD your custom 2.0 and mail it to me. my link is atrocious these days, just got off the phone with he ISP. 27kbps as against the promised 1mbps top limit. its a fraud.

@chikeze

no offense but this is a forum, post your problems here and somebody might help if i can't.
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by texazzpete(m): 2:41pm On Aug 05, 2008

Perhaps you might want to wait until Winpwn 2.05 and the new iphone 2.0.1 firmware is supported?

BTW, Chromium theme is now on Cydia 2.0. No excuse there, man.

PS: I grabbed Installer 4.0 beta off xsellize. Looks ace, man.
Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by ExInferis(m): 3:05pm On Aug 05, 2008
@tezz

seems all ive said is lost on you. since my HD has gone the way of Davy Crockett im having no option but to DL that fw mother right off the net, the shite is my link breaks off, slows down, gallops up to speed etc and that fw is a fickle baby. any slight error and you get "error 1401" or somesuch from itunes without wning. try pwning and neither winpwn nor pwnage recognize it as valid. will put up the screenie so you see what i mean.

almos every single download is mangled EXCEPT the 3G fw.

Installer beta is out already? wonders. lipsrsealed
