this may not work and it may, no guarantees, chances are it wont. try at your own peril. frankly i wont advise it, best to just make a bootscreen and use winpwn to build a custom firmware if you absolutely must pesonalize your phone with "vanity plates"


this is better done via secure shell but pc suite will serve as well. first i assume your phone is jailbroken. now fire up pc suite and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

there should be some PNG files there, lots of them. the ones you need have an underscore in them and are the smallest.
copy them and edit them with Paint. set up your name and save the files as FSO_YOURNAME.PNG but leave the DEFAULT as it is. copy both to the system path above, set permission as 755 (it only needs to read and execute). restart spingboard by SHUTTING down and powering on, don't just hot restart. cross your fingers and pray to your gods.


ps: you may have to edit displaysettings.plist to move the icons a little if your PNG is more than six letters.

as for wikipedia ive never installed it, best ask tezasspete. but im guessing the payload goes to var/root/library/wikipedia (you create the wikipedia folder at path end)

. i dont know, ask pete and logica.

Neoteny's advice is probably way too complicated for you.
Easy, just install Make It Mine from installer and change the Logo to anything you want.

You should be able to change it to a graphic also from Customize. At least i think so. i've never been a Customize freak.

I'll help you with the Wikipedia later on. But why not hold off until you can update to 2.0? You're bound to lose everything once you upload, anyway.
People are working on Wiki2touch for 2.0, so you'll still be able to install it then.

var/root/library/ surprises you? shouldnt, thats where i make my Quran database folder to hold the files as per instructions from zoosware, and it works. and im on 1.1.4.

i see the source of the confusion: i omitted one directory: its PRIVATE/var/root/library, not /var at root level.


but then again you know better as per wikipedia seeing as ive never installed it.

Correction:

u don't need to set permissions on images other than read/write (u don't execute images). in this case, read is all u need (just rhyming )

-r--r--r-- (0444) or -rw-rw-rw- (0666) is good enough.

ive had an ipod since forever besides the iphone, need something new and can't see me buying Rio or such. actually zune is cool, and the zune pc manager is also pretty slick. besides thres a registry tweak to make it appear as an external disk but without a drive letter.

the registry hack only works on your PC. So you can't plug your zune into a cafe PC.

i was on the '#iphone' IRC channel about 2 months ago and suggested that somebody came up with a way to connect your iphone to your pc that has a connection to the internet and then use that connection to browse on your iphone. they said it was way 2 complicated 2 develop. the arrangement will allow you to use your pc's internet connection in a situation where your wifi isn't working. now maybe this 30-pin iPod Connector USB cable with some software/drivers can achieve that.

Not sure if it can share via Wifi, though. Can't even test it cos Celtel GPRS in Port Harcourt is crap!

ex inferis is right. pete, u got it reversed. i want 2 browse on my phone using my pc's link, not browse on my pc using my iphone as a modem. with netshare, do u connect the phone to the pc using the sync cable? the idea i had requires the use of the sync cable, not a wireless connnection anyway.

i you have already downloaded the 2gig wiki database, extract it and place it in /var/root  and set the folder permission to 755 (0755 if using SSH, still the same thing)

ive not done it before, just dug it up.

finally on 2.0

seems you have to insert your sim in order for the native sim contacts importer to pop up. no wonder i missed it in my first upgrade. sorted out my app store now working on my account.

download winpwn (if on windoze), use it to pwn your phone (use the ipwner button) most likely your phone will enter recovery mode after pwning especially if you unlocked 1.1.4 with ziphone. if that happens use ziphone to boot into normal mode.

install bootneuter from installer. use the following settings : 4.6BL, Neuter on, Fakeblank off, Unlock on. now tap on FLASH to flash both the bootloader and baseband.

once done download 2.0.1 custom image from http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4335079/iPhone1_1_2.0.1_5B108_201_Restore.ipsw

this firmware is pwned already and contains SSH, Installer 4 beta and Cydia.

you may have to downgrade to Itunes 7.5 in order to upgrade (if and only if 7.7 does not work. 7.7 will ask to be connected to the update server to identify your phone once it goes into recovery if you are offline. either go online or downgrade. do not use itunes 7.7.1 !). if you get Error 1604 try uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, or use a separate account or even a different computer.

to upgrade, use ziphone and go into recover mode, hold SHIFT and click RESTORE, look for the downloaded firmware and go on from there.

if windoze tells you to locate and install Apple Device Driver (Recovery) then reflash bootneuter with BL 3.9.

the other method is to download a virgin firmware and go htrough the hassle of pwning, neutering and making your own custom firmware.

To avoid the Error 1604, no need to reboot or use a diff computer. make sure you put your phone in manual DFU before the custom restore

1. Swich off the phone. Make sure it's connected to your PC
2. With the phone off, hold power and Home button down for exactly 10 seconds
3. Take your hand off the power button, keeping the home button depressed. Hold on to the Home button until you hear the normal Windows USB beep. you know, the sound windows makes when it detects an USB device
4. As soon as you hear the sound, let go of the Home button


The phone will then be in DFU mode. It will show a totally blank (black) screen.

No errors will be experienced when installing the custom firmware
