Do you know about Osun-Osogbo Festival? It's about a water goddess who was famously known for providing children for the barren. I was reportedly told that some folks from Europe wanted to whisk her away. This goddess used to float over water. A big massive fish, floats on water in a standing position on water. People in their thousand will gather around the river, a major river called Osun River. The goddess(the big fish) spews water while people offer all sorts of sacrificial gifts ranging from live chickens to live goats and sheep: they are thrown into the river as sacrificial gift for the goddess. I need to mention that I heard too, that the fish has some part of it in human flesh but it was nothing no one ever saw before until now.

aww, no, never heard that story.
Fascinating.

But I onced watched a Nigerian movie a long time ago, like 10 yrs ago or sth.
The movie was about a woman who was kidnapped and got turned into a fish. The fish was caught, and sold in the market.
A guy who was suspected of killing a politician bought the fish and somehow she turned into a woman gain. Just minutes before they could hang him, she became a witness and cleared him of accusations. The story has so many plots, many political controverst in it. One of the best ones, but I can't rem. the tittle. I'm not sure if its a model of the myth you just told me. Like Saworoide is a model of Abasha's term of presidency.

Oh, this is for real. You can google it. Osun Osogbo Festival. The immediate past apostle was Susan Wenger, she's a white swedish and I hear she was there for as long as 50 years or so. She died this year -- or so -- I think. How she ended up being an Osun Priest marveled me but I'm sure it was never manipulated. She's called Yeye Osun. Since the attempted kidnap on the goddess, she was never seen outside.

Explain more of the Goddess.
So the Yeye Osun tried to kidnap the Goddess? Why was she never seen outside?

I think I've heard of Yeye Osun. . .  .is it pronounced as YayYay Osun?
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by oyinda3(f): 6:49am On Jul 22, 2009
the goddess is the fish. i don't think the yeye will want to kidnap it. lol
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by Nobody: 6:53am On Jul 22, 2009
I think I've heard "Yeye Osun" from my grandma before. My mom barely knows anything about Naija/its muth sef undecided

So how's Yeye Osun connected to the goddess?
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by TheSeeker(m): 6:58am On Jul 22, 2009
@Oyinda, the answer is simple. Have you forgotten the old saying "Don't put your eggs in one basket"?  grin grin. I figured if I put the thread on here alone, they might move it elsewhere, meanwhile I want to put together as many Osuns as I can from different parts of this forum. Then, I'll bring them all to one place, understood? This is about convergence of Osun natives, residents, students & fans.

@FL Gators

Yes, it's pronounced YayYay Osun. It wasn't the Yeye that wanted to kidnap the goddess. It was the whites aided by some greedy Osun priests. It's a wide known fact that Europeans have bought off all the real idols and deities by paying off the priests who should keep these things. A lot have been sold off in Edo, Enugu, Ondo, Oyo and many other states. So, the same was done about Osun and the plan failed. That was why the goddess never came out again -- though some people still want to believe it's been sold --- some fanatics believe it never was sold but no one knows the actual truth. I'd go with the latter, the fanatics. Susan Wenger was a principled woman and no way will she have agreed to sell off the goddess. Another reason is some years back, Osogbo king, Ataoja, said he's back off of worshipping and offering yearly sacrifices to the goddess; an attempt to scrap her relevance in the town. Well, I was told he was warned severally to retract his decision, refusal which he constantly maintained.

One morning, he woke up and his whole palace was in the middle of waters. Everywhere was heavily flooded, just the palace only. He couldn't go nowhere. He's a muslim and by tenets of the religion, he's not allowed to have anything to do with the goddess, well, we all know there was no way possible for a king not to have business with personalities like the goddess. I'm not a believer in such things, but I believe it sure exists, 100%.

If you go to Ife, you'll see the Oranmiyan staff where it's rooted. Do you have an idea who Oranmiyan is?

Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by TheSeeker(m): 7:06am On Jul 22, 2009
No, I'm not from Ife. But yeah, I know everything about Ile-Ife(Ife Oooye) and Modakeke. Ilesha and Esa Oke, Iree and Ada, Ilobu, Osogbo, Ede, Ejigbo, anywhere, name it. Used to stay in Ife though but I stayed in Osogbo more. What about you?
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by Nobody: 7:08am On Jul 22, 2009
Interesting.
I've been around southwest Naija. Me and my grandma used to travel around cuz we had so many family members around that area.

I've been to Ife, but I was very young.
I like that name, Ife, Ile-Ife, love it!

Oramiyan? Nope. . . .That's in Ife, I suppose
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by oyinda3(f): 7:13am On Jul 22, 2009
i didn't think modakeke was a place. i just it was just the name for the ppl. don't kno much abt them except that they hate the ifes. i remember when they were fighting years back '98/99ish. my family talked about them.
do u know the reason for the conflict btw the ifes and modakeke?
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by TheSeeker(m): 7:16am On Jul 22, 2009
Oduduwa as you may have already known emanated from Ile-Ife. He had 7 sons. One of them is Oranmiyan. Then there's Orangun: The one that formed Ila Orangun, a town still in powerful existence(That's where Bisi Akande and the former IG -- Tafa Balogun is from). The last child I think was the one that went to start Benin now Edo State. That's why Edo state still has to consider themselves as Yoruba because one of Oduduwa's sons formed them. Till today, in Edo State, you'll still find Yoruba names rampant everywhere -- spelling might differ -- but meaning and pronunciation are the same. However, Orangun and Ataoja have never been friends -- from the days of old till now -- at least to the best of my knowledge.
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by Nobody: 7:19am On Jul 22, 2009
Fascinating. And why didnt they get along?

Who is Bisi Akande and Tefa Balogun?

Theseeker, I think I'd get my sleep now. I'll talk to you later. Later Gator wink

Modakeke is popularly called, amongst themselves, Modakeke Akoraye. Akoraye is a dove: A completely white dove. The sound the bird made was "Modakeke" that's why they named the town that name. Some years before Modakeke came into existence, the then Ooni of Ife was told by their oracle that some visitors will be coming into their town. And they should not under any circumstances, allow them to stay. However, the king went against the warning and accommodated them on that part of Ile-Ife. They existed peacefully until the present Ooni, Okunade Sijuade came in. Sijuade was purportedly said to have bought the position with money as his family was never entitled at that time to be kings. He was rich so it was really easy for him. He has a son which is kind of doubtful among the Ifes because many believe he's impotent and can't have a child, but who knows.

He assumed monarchy in 1980 I think and the clash first broke out in 1981. It later settled dusts in 1982. Adesoji Aderemi, who was a governor then, was the previous king before Sijuade. He was accomodating, but Sijuade wasn't as tolerating as his predecessor. Modakeke didn't find this easy so they had to fight to hold the place where they have been lodged as visitors. Modakeke in actual facts, are visitors. They are made up of a lot of people from different backgrounds, but mainly, THE TAPAs. The latest crisis that broke out was when Late Gen. Abacha created more local governments and left Ile-Ife out of the advantage and alloted Ife East Local Government to Modakeke. Ife with the influence they have, walked into the Federal corridors and had it changed to Oke-Ogbo, Ile-Ife.

Modakeke found this very insulting and a completely despicable robbery, then they struck. I have to mention also that their leader was not yet crowned even till today(but assurance has been made by Ooni last month that he'll crown him very very soon). The crisis went on and on, many people died. Spouses from either sides had to separate. Some kill their own kids because of the difference. A lot of atrocities happened. Modakeke are very stubborn people, they got charms and voodoos. They are determined people. Very small compared to Ile-Ife they were but shook the war professionals in Ife. The level they took it on was becoming worrisome. People fled Modakeke most especially because they were open to more dangers than Ife.

Modakeke refused to back down. At some point, Sijuade asked Modakeke's Baale, Adedoyin, to come and bow to him; the latter turned it down. There's rumor that they both went to the same school and in the same class I guess. The government got involved but Modakeke weren't ready for peace unless the Local Government was returned to them. To make matters worse, Ile-Ife ordered them to change the name of the town from Modakeke to Modakeke-Ife. That caused a lot of rift. I can go on and on. In the end, the Local Government was never changed from Oke-Ogbo. Modakeke changed their name to what they told them to. But ex-governor Bisi Akande, compensated them by handing them IFE EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OFFICE, although not recognized by the Federal Government but within the State. That helped quell the crisis a bit. If you have any question, holla at your boy

yea it was pretty bad. no body could travel then n we heard a lot about juju, ppl drowning in wells, houses burnt n what not.
is sijuade still alive? i heard abt him too but don't know too much

we had a couple of family friends that were modakeke and i remember there being some kind of unspoken tension
Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by TheSeeker(m): 7:47am On Jul 22, 2009
Sijuade is still alive. He's the deciding father of whoever will be Governor in Osun State. If he doesn't make the decision, no one else will. He and Alaafin of Oyo aren't big fans of each other. Sijuade is a close pal to OBJ. He's one of the most powerful monarchs in Nigeria. You line him up with Emir of Kano, Sadaurna, Obi of Onitsha. He's rich and has lots of influence. Do you know there was a country-- or state--- I don't remember now, that he went, pointed his royal staff into the sky and it rained in less than 5 minutes. In history, there was never rain at the place. I don't remember the place now, but it's true. They serve him as their god there.

Yes, it was bad right there then during the crisis. Modakekes burnt houses with mere eggs. No fuel, nothing inflammable whatsoever. Just eggs and boom a house is burnt.

Re: Osun -- State Of The Living Spring! Identify Here by TheSeeker(m): 5:47pm On Jul 22, 2009
@Hogged, Ogedengbe was a warlord. He was so fiery when it came to war matters. He was also a well paid warlord. He fights for other communities and town as long as he's paid but for the most time on a worthy cause -- so I heard. There's also another, Fabunmi Oke-Imesi. He was also a warlord of almost the same calibre as Ogedengbe. You can access Oke-Imesi from Esa Oke. Oke-Imesi's in the Ekiti territory. When you get there, you'll see his statue there--of course of Fabunmi -- if it's not been removed.  So my brother, to the best of my knowledge, Ogedengbe was a warlord.

Well, according to history, Ilesa was founded by one of the 16 sons of Oduduwa, "Owa Ajibogun". He was believed to have fetched seawater to cure his father's blindness. When he got to Ilesa, he found already in existence, 5 towns. The head of the 5 towns is Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland. He was so recognized that they called themselves, "Omo Obokun". Okesha Ilesha was the most populated of the ancient town and its leader was Ogedengbe -- The Obanla of Ijeshaland. He played an important role in the Kiriji war in the early 90s. It was a war between Ilesha and Ibadan. It was believed that Ilesha and Ekiti formed an alliance, "Ekiti parapo". That's the best I know.
