Nigerians tend to use "extreme" words, even when they do not mean it. For the most part, I will say that many of us enjoy have AAs who find their roots in Africa. I am in full support of AAs going back to Africa to reclaim their roots and becoming more conscious of their brothers and sisters on the continent.

We are all one people. The original man is African, so let us all be friends and move forward. I often see more AA women more receptive to Africa than the men.

I understand what you're saying. I wish that we all could just get along. After watching the tv program African American Lives I have an interest in finding out where in West Africa my ancestors came from. I won't feel complete until I find out. I have talked about this on the "Hero I Guess I Owe You An Apology" thread.

Lets just keep that to ourselves. wink

I can't have people thinking I am soft. That would destroy my reputation on Nairaland.

No problem, just simply pointing it out. I know you didn't mean any harm. Many people do understand that the word "tribe" can be quite offensive to some Africans. I am simply here to enlighten those who do not know that the word can be seen as derogatory.

That is why I am eager to learn African culture. I never want to say or do anything offensive. I have already contacted The Center for African American Genealogical Research Incorporation. I asked them where can I get DNA testing to see what African ethnicities I descend from. I am now waiting for a response.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? And how did you head about Nairaland?

I am from the state of Mississippi, USA. I was searching the website for the culture and kinds of foods of Nigeria. I am interested in that part of Africa the most because I knew someone from there years ago. Some of the suggested sites had Nairaland web address on it. At first, I thought I could not join because I was AA. When I did, I was shocked at all of the topics on it. Nigeria is a place I want to visit some day. Also, I had a minister that is from Liberia.

That's good for you. When you finally get the DNA test done, please let us know what the results were wink. As for doing or saying something offensive, you shouldn't worry too much about that. We all learn from our mistakes--if you don't know something then you ask questions. Its all part of the Nairaland experience.

who gives a shite?  grin

black americans should be proud of OURSELVES! as pleep said the 1980s was a desvastating time for us and we've yet to get back the respect in and due to our community but it will happen as more of us are now seeing eduation for what it is, a chance at a better life (even if it is mostly the women  grin) Africans are benefiting from our achievements (again excellent point pleep  smiley) likewise we are of others - and perhaps some of theirs tongue, and though they have surpassed us in the education fields they've no room to judge us. Instead of looking elsewhere for validation we need to bring ourselves up as a people. But all and all we need to unite and move on.  smiley

I'm not friendly with Black Americans or "African Americans" as alot of you like to be known. Infact, can any of you actually show me where in Africa you descend from?

From my personal experiences "African Americans" walk around with this constant chip on their shoulder. Most Africans that go to school with African Americans tend to get bullied or teased for being African. We get called "Uncle Tom" and "Whitey" just because we actually want to learn, instead of standing on a street corner selling drugs.

Also, the Hip Hop mentality that ALOT African Americans carry around with you is shocking. Sagging pants, ebonics, constant foul language. I mean, what is going on?

This is not an attack. It's just what I've seen with my own two eyes. Am I proud of Black Americans? Only the few that actually want to better themselves. The majority just want a free handout. I would love to see how all those lazy, ghetto, hoodrats that depend on welfare would survive out here in Nigeria where nothing is given to you for free.

If you are a Black American and nothing that I said applies to you, I salute you!!!  cool

actually we can.  grin
but does it determine when we will take our next breaths or how much food will be on our plates? i doubt it.

i understand you completely seeing as how my mother is an immigrant but the highlighted line shows the reason why i do not pity or feel too sorry for alot of Africans. It's ok when you all can stereotype us but when it is given you are quick to label us.

clean your bi-focals "my fren"  tongue
take a good look at those groups. are you POSITIVE there arent any caribbeans or africans among them?
furthermore i can literally name all of the whites, asians; etc who also sag their pants regardless of education or class status.  smiley also pidgin is NO different from EBONICS which btw is literally EBONY + PHONICS. Ebony means black and Phonics pertains to language or tongue. Pidgin is also a black 'language' no? also WHERE in Africa did ENGLISH as a language come from? i'd like to know since we are a disgrace for speaking anything other than the 'mother tongue' (ENGLISH tongue tongue) Some Africans! boy i tell you! lol you all tickle me.

no offence taken.

keep your pride. trying to diss us in the form of a compliment is not going to cut it. the FEW? okay oo.

The majority just want a free handout.

although we account for only 12 percent of the US's population we are still in the millions. you've met millions of AAs to determine this?  shocked shocked

they will survive just as those 'lazy, ghetto, hoodrats' who CURRENTLY live in Nigeria do!  cheesy cheesy

Lol black americans don't care what part of africa our ancestors 500 years ago, came from. I trace my family back to charleston south carolina and thats as far as i wanna take it. Its not necessary for us to trace back to some random tribe in africa theres no point

And have you seen the state africa is in.lol the entire continent lol. Do you see how africans act? Ya are ten times worst than we are. Black americans have been the most influential blacks in the world for like the past 100 years lol
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by CalienteMi: 10:49pm On Sep 24, 2011
So what if Africans aren't proud of Black Americans. Boo Hoo. Africans' opinions of Black Americans hold no weight nor value.

Africans should focus on preventing global theft on their resources and building their countries to where it should be.

Africans being proud or not of Black Americans is not going to solve global issues.

Hey there Kony, speak for yourself. As an African American, I'd love to know where my bloodline originated from. Sure it wouldn't instantly solve any problems, but it's something that's always nice to know. If only it weren't so expensive.

Im curious to know as well, don get me wrong. But i dont feel its necessary. A'lot of africans think we are lost with no culture, just because we dont know our african lineage. Which is far from the truth

I don't want to do it for other Africans. I want do it because it inserts the final piece of the puzzle of "who I am". Sure it's not going to magically turn me into an African or anything like that, and I'm still an African American first, but if every other group on the planet can know where they come from, why not us too? Closure is always a good thing.

i too want to know where I am from hence my planning on buying the DNA kit but it's not a priority. My priority is acknowledging I am black, staying proud and helping as many of my ppl as possible.

@ the Africans on this thread let me get somethings off my chest.

It's true AAs don't have a defined culture but then again neither do Africans. No other nation or group of people in the world are more complex than those identified as African. The average African country has over 100 different dialects and ethnic clans/tribes - many of whom are mortal enemies that would rather befriend foreigners than to unite with each other. Because of this lots of key facts about Africa has been lost or ignored due to bias and the many taboos which apparently and sorry to say is - being honest  lipsrsealed. Self righteousness is what kills our ppl esp. those in the motherland.

The same reason why Caribbeans and AAs divide and separate themselves is the same reason why Africans do - ignorance and lack of unity. Wearing so called "traditional garbs"  grin and speaking pidgin isn't the same as a unified culture. You have all of that and what is the result? Igbos vs. Yoruba, Tutsi vs. Hutu, Gio vs. Krahn, [bloods vs crips << LOL just kidding oo!  grin]; etc PLUS add religion and politics to the mix. KAI!!  undecided You get what I mean I am sure. The only culture we blacks have pertains to just BEING black and soulful.  tongue By soulful I mean we are emotional people and share a common bond that is so strong words cannot describe it better than referring to each other as "brother, sister". Yet we fight!

The only edge you all have over us western blacks is family structure and discipline. Our men have lost sight of manhood and our families torn so there is no real solid foundation culturally. But with that having been said Africans are also victim of the same devastating crime against humanity that was and IS slavery. Some Africans don't even know some of THEIR ancestors were sold into slavery too and yet they come on here or any other debate forum and are quick to call us impure  tongue. Claiming we cannot grasp the concept of education or proper command of the English language but fail to realise it is EUROPE they have to go to in order to achieve and that their 'love' for the 'Queen's language' is a direct result of brainwashing! Some of the same Jamos, Akatas; etc you mock MAY DO carry your blood in their veins! Know that!  angry

Black people just need to let go of the divisions, inferiority AND superiority complexes because at the end of the day WE ARE ALL WE'VE GOT!
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by MrsChima1(f): 4:17am On Oct 04, 2011
Gbam Sis!  Real recognizes real.   wink

@Topic

I do not care if Africans are proud of Black Americans or not, their opinions doesn't matter and has no value on your life.  You do not need a DNA kit to know who you are and you learn who you are by life experience.  Let say you get tested to find out where your heritage stems from then what?  Would the result change the disunity amongst Black people in every corner of the world?  No, it will not.

I like being me and enjoys every bit of me.  I laugh in Mandarin when people go out of their way to tell you what they think of you as if YOU GIVE A DAMN.  I take that back SOME of you guys care about what other people thinks of you and that's sad.  I have seen chatters on this site break down in chat tears because someone didn't support their views nor share the same airheadness as them.  Be confident in who you are and roll with the likes of you.

Stop giving worthless people power over your life and own your life.  Real talk.

You have to love yourself enough to say I am worth all good things life has to offer and bleep the rest.  Until then we as black people are going to maintain as puppets to the CRACKERS.

Yeah, I said it.  What are you going to do about it?
