I wonder.

Do the advantages of the internet really overshadow its disadvantages?

It doesnt look that way.

I'm afraid there's much we dont know about African Americans; or let me put it this way,  Theres much we are NOT teaching and being taught about black Americans because we are to busy trying to teach ourselves about the European ideology. I was under the opinion that we already knew the European ideology and what it represents, it represents deception, oppression, stealth robbery and everything else that can be deemed anti-African.

For instance, did you know that there are more than 2000 inventions credited to black Americans that many people dont know about and those who know about them dont talk enough about.

For instance; Isaac Gillam one of Nasa's former directors; Elijah McCoy a great engineer that had more than 57 patents; Madam C J Walker the first ever female American millionaire; Daniel Williams the first ever cardiologist to perform a successfull open-heart surgery, Lewis Latimer who invented the flourescent & fillaments in a light bulb and is in Americas Inventors Hall of fame for his contribution in lighting up the entire states at the time, Charles Drew the great physician that was involved in breakthroughs in blood transfusion and ultimately was responsible for the technology behind the sustenace of the blood banks e.t.c (and those are just a tip off the ice berg, )

Yes, i think Africans should be very proud of Black Americans.

I'm not here to preach to you about why we should or shouldnt love or and fall in love with black Americans you only need to look, read, see and testify for yourself about the great things a people can accomplish even in the front of adversity.
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by iNIKiNOK: 9:03pm On Oct 13, 2011
Ok- I completely understand what the majority of Africans are saying about modern AA culture. Understand- Not all AA's are smoking or using drugs, not all aren't. Not all are college educated, but some are. Not all AA men want to get married, but some do. Not all are disconnected with their heritage, but a few are. By this means, how could you possibly judge an entire culture of individuals based on assumption and stereotypes? The news? Tv shows? Music? Music Videos? Ok- what does that cover? Less than 1% of all AA's? Judge people, any people based on your experiences with them and then use your experiences as a truth for that 1 particular person. That's it. It would be absolutely idiotic to say all those people are this way because I had this experience with a couple of people,  a couple of people don't cover an entire diaspora of Africans.

And lastly,  if you see something, you wish were different- if you've learned anything from the civil rights movement. SPEAK UP! Help Change It! Use your voice, your culture, you heart and care enough about someone else and help us AA's! Find a way to promote family, self love and better health and solid spiritual foundations in our communities. Build bridges,  don't burn them by being a vehicle for hatred and stereotype. Use your life.
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by iNIKiNOK: 9:29pm On Oct 13, 2011
WTF is a "hiphop" culture? Please don't use the same bullshit, stereotypical terms the mainstream uses, hiphop in itself is NOT negative or bad, it has more to do with environment these kids live in, not anything to do with an ambiguous "hiphop", culture, I'd like to see you define what it is. I grew up in Philly in the late 70s and 80s during the beginning of hiphop and it was a form of expression for people who had no voice then, now its just been owned and hijacked by white record company owners. Hiphop didn't destroy blacks just as Motown in the 60s and 70s didn't destroy blacks, thats bogus.

Yanno, though this thread is about African thoughts about AA's , I must add that I am sick of "Hip Hop Purists" blaming greedy white record exec's for exploiting black men. What happened to personal responsibility? Black men signed up left and right for exploitation in exchange for a check. It wasn't just "greedy white men." Greedy black men had a lot to do with it too. And don't give me anything about, "When you don't have nothing and you have a baby to feed, " There was money at labels that were concerned with conscious hip hop. No, you may not be able to buy a small country after your first album drops, but diapers and housing could surely fit into your budget.

It is time that all people accept personal responsibility for their lives and their communities.

I do occasionally keep an eye out on what Nigerian Americans are doing as I have family there. But as far as African Americans on a whole, NO. What's my business with a bunch of lazy akatas and Jamaican gangbangers? When I lived in New York the Jamaicans astounded me wit their laziness. So many of them were sit on the stoops outside the buildings and smoke marijuana all day. They absolutely reeked of it. The women were mostly the same. Loud & ghetto. I wasn't impressed. The local African Americans were mostly hoodlums that refused to go to school or do anything constructive.

Alot o them lived on welfare. Something we don't get in Naija. It's weird how they can be content with doing nothing. It's not a mentality I can ever get used to considering that growing up my family worked just as hard as everyone does in Lagos just to get what we need. And if your from Naija or Africa in general you know how difficult the struggle can be. The welfare thing just bafles. As much as AA's complain about living in the "ghetto" they have no idea how truly lucky they are. You don't get freebies where I'm from.

Also, I was shocked at the amount of women that walked around flaunting their bastard children. How can you have two children by two different men and none of the men have stuck around shocked ? AH!! I don't know with African Americans, I really don't know.

The gangsta rap culture IS the African American culture. It has African Americans by the balls. From the sagging  trouser. To the slang/ebonics. To the horrible  and aggressive attitude. These kids want to grow up to be like the local drug dealer instead of a doctor or scientist. Can people see how bad that is?

However I will say that I did met some very nice, warm and friendly African Americans.
It's just a shame that the bad ones seem to be like a immovable dark cloud over them. It feels like everytime I went to a club that had akata in it a fight would break out. Near enough every time, seriously. In my culture that type of thing is frowned on.  That's why when we had the Naija indpendence day in New York back in 2007 we didn't want the akata to come because they did we feared they might start fighting in the club and ruin things.

What is "Akata"?

What is "Akata"?

It's a Yoruba word that has been adopted by other West Africans that generally means "an unruly person without home training". It's commonly used by Africans as an insult towards African Americans though.
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by tpia5: 4:31am On Oct 14, 2011
this is getting redundant.

can seun or somebody add akata to the word filter list please.

like you did with the other stuff.

So did you go to any of the middle and upper class black areas in New York? Or did you choose to stay in the slums because it reinforced what you already wanted to believe? What you did was no different than me judging all Nigerian men because of those who beat their wives and are corrupt government officials.

No offense, but we are not.

I've had these discussions with Africans.

We're very ashamed.

The ghetto lifestyle disgust me, BTW.

Even BA tries to degrade Africans, asking ignorant questions that even the whites wont.

Honestly, I speak my language (Yoruba) in the midst of a crowd in order to differentiate myself. I'm African, I'm Yoruba. The color of my skin should not define me.

African Americans need to lift themselves up, its time to wade in the water, my children.

And to the Nigerian imbeciles copying their ghetto lifestyle, eku ise o.

Out of curiosity, do you really think blacks in the U.S. care about you or what you think? No, and I'm one of them. I don't need nor want your acceptance. Thanks, but no thanks. If you don't care about black Americans, why do you talk trash about my ethnic group? Why is it that some Africans like to talk trash about blacl Americans? Oh, that's right, you can't talk trash about others because you're unable or unwilling to stand up to those that control the economies of your countries It's funny how you say black Americans are ignorant when you are expressing $tupidity, hatred, and ignorance yourself. So, Nigerians have no problems, right? All "ghetto" Nigerians are copying blacks in the U.S.? Silly. Just so you know (I feel like a broken record saying this), not every black person in the U.S. is on drugs or do whatever stereotypical garbage you think. I've never done that.

As for imbeciles, it's you. You are the slowpoke. By the way, the word ghetto means "a place where people live." It described Jewish enclaves in Europe.

Another silly, hateful a$$hole. Laziness is not a "one group" thing. Everybdy is lazy. Everybody. You talk about hoodlums? What about the hoodlums that run rampant in Nigeria? Why don't you clean up your yard before you tell someone else to do the same? Drugs? I can pull up numerous news stories about drugs in Africa, let alone Nigeria. Refuse to go to school? I went to school and I graduated from all the schools I went to along with every other black person I know.

Welfare? What "welfare checks"? Bill Clinton and the GOP Congress passed "Welfare Reform" or "Welfare-to-Work" programs and WELFARE ROLLS ARE AT HISTORIC LOWS!!! There is very little welfare dependency in 21st Century America no matter what you and other ignorant a$$holes say. And by the way, those who are on that are mostly white. I know some of you Africans like to think white people are great and can do no wrong, but it's the truth. My family have never gotten any freebies nor any black person I know, so you can stick it.

You think only black men, all black men, in the U.S. don't take care of children? Man, you are really full of it. Newsflash: men of all colors can deadbeat dads. My father raised me, took care of me, the whole nine yards. Probably the biggest deadbeat in the U.S. is a Congressman named Joe Walsh.

http://www.suntimes.com/6720892-417/tea-party-rep.-joe-walsh-sued-for-100000-in-child-support

You are silly and clearly know nothing about Afro-American culture. It's not just hip-hop. It's also jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, techno music, house music, rock and roll, doo-wop, etc. Most music styles that exist today were started among black people in the U.S. I've seen young guys of all colors with sagging trousers. It's disgraceful like you are, but it's not a "black thing." Slang? Nigerians don't use slang? I've heard various ethnic groups from Italians to the Chinese use their own slang. But to you, it's wrong for black Americans to use slang. Wow. Aggresive? There are aggresive people everywhere. As for doctors and scientists, look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African-American_inventors_and_scientists. Feel silly now?

And once again, another dumba$$ (you) tries to give a compliment after going through a tirade of insults, especially with the use of the word "akata." We all know it's a condescending slur, so don't act like it's not, dumba$$. Who are you trying to fool with this garbage? And how the hell are you going to sit there and act like there aren't any Nigerians who do silly crap? Who do you think you are? You are the one who knows nothing.

@ physics

home training is a nigerian term.

Americans say manners, or lack manners. Some could say breeding, which actually is more british or continental.

Which american did you see using the phrase home training?
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by lakal(m): 2:49pm On Oct 15, 2011
Black Americans and Southern white Americans definitely say home training.
Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by tpia5: 2:52pm On Oct 15, 2011
Black americans say someone is acting ignorant, not that they lack home training.

Home training is a term used in nigeria, not america.

Re: Are Africans Proud Of Black Americans? by tpia5: 6:35pm On Oct 15, 2011
I have to disagree.

I havent watched the video yet, but home training is most definitely not an american term.

If you see an american using it, then that person must have been hanging around nigerians a lot.

Americans interacting with themselves do not use words like home training and neither would they assume another american would be familiar with the term.
