Etinosa1234:Thank God for the early Portuguese explorers. Please read and weep Joao de Barros in his accounts wrote of a possible pre-Christian influence in ancient Benin Kingdom:- “Among the many things which the king D. Jodo learnt from the ambassador of the king of Benin and also from Joao Afonso d Aveiro of what they had been told by the inhabitants of these regions was that to the east of Benin Kingdom at twenty moons journey which according to their account and the short journeys they made would be about two hundred and fifty of our leagues (5.556km or 3.456 is a league) there lived the most powerful monarch of these parts who was called “Ogane”. Among the pagan chiefs of the territories of Benin, Ogane was held in as great veneration as is the supreme Pontif with us. “In accordance with a very ancient custom, the King of Benin, on ascending the throne, sends ambassadors to Ogane with rich gifts to announce that by the decease of his predecessor, he has succeeded to the Kingdom of Benin and request confirmation. To signify his assent, the Prince Ogane sends the King a staff and a head piece of shining brass fashioned like a Spanish helment in place of a crown and scepter. He also sends a cross, likewise of brass to be worn round the neck, a holy and religious emblem similar to that worn by the KNIGHTS of the order of Saint JOHN. Without these emblems the people do not recognize the King as lawful ruler, nor can he call himself truly king.” “All the time this ambassador is at the court of Ogane, he never sees the Prince, but only the curtains of silk behind which he sits, for he is regarded as sacred. When the ambassador is leaving, he is shown a foot below the curtains as a sign that the Prince is within and agrees to the matters that he has raised; this foot they reverence as thought it were a sacred relic” “As a kind of reward for the hardships of such a journey, the ambassador receives a small CROSS, similar to that sent to the King, which is thrown around his neck to signify that he is free and exempt from all servitudes and privileged in his native country as the KNIGHTS are with us. https://medievalarchives.com/2010/09/25/medieval-cross-influenced-ancient-benin-culture/ |

Obalatule: This ur hero Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Genealogy and Nativity "Thus, in tracing my paternal lineage, I could say that both parents of my father are direct descendants of Eze Chima. As for me, I can trace my paternal ancestry in this wise: I am the first son of Chukwuemeka, who was the third child and first son of Azikiwe, who was the second son of Molokwu, who was the third son of Ozomaocha, who was the second son of Inosi Onira, who was the fourth son of Dei, the second son of Eze Chima, the founder of Onitsha." SOURCE - Nnamdi A zikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p4 "I can trace my maternal ancestry thus: I am the first son of Nwanonaku Rachel Chinwe Ogbenyeanu (Aghadiuno)Azikiwe, who was third daughter of Aghadiuno Ajie, the fifth son of Onowu Agbani, first daughter of Obi Udokwu, the son who descended from five Kings of Onitsha. Five of these rulers of Onitsha were direct lineal descendants of Eze Chima, who led his warrior adventurers when they left Benin to establish the Onitsha city state in about 1748 AD." SOURCE - Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p5 "One day I asked her (grandmother) the meaning of the word 'Onitsha'. She explained that it had historical significance. The terminology meant one who despised another. It is a contraction of two words, Onini to despise, and Ncha meaning others. So that the two words when joined together mean one who despises others. Then I asked her why we despised others. She patted me on the back and told me that it was due to our aristocratic background and tradition. I insisted that she should explain to me the basis of this supercilious social attitude. She told me that we despised others because we descended from the Royal House of Benin and so regarded ourselves as the superiors of other tribes who had no royal blood in their veins....." "I continued to belabor my grandmother to tell me more of the history and origins of the Onitsha people. She narrated that many many years ago, there lived at Idu (Benin) a great Oba who had many children. Due to a power struggle regarding the right of precedence among princes of the blood and other altercations, there was a civil war in Benin. One day, the supporters of one of the princes insulted and assaulted Queen Asije, the mother of of the Oba of Benin, who was accused of having trespassed on their farmland. Enraged at this evidence of indiscipline and lawlessness, the Oba ordered his war chief and brother, Gbunwala Asije to apprehend and punish the insurgents. In the attempt to penalise them, Chima, the ultimate founder of the Onitsha city-state, a prince of the blood in his own right, led the recalcitrants against his Uncle, Gbunwala. This intensified the civil war which rent the kingdom of Benin in two and led to the founding of Onitsha Ado N'Idu....... ..." "As the great trek from Benin progressed, some did not have the stout heart of the pioneer-warrior, and decided to settle at different places, known today as Onitsha -Ugbo, Onitsha-Olona, Onitsha-Mili, Obior, Issele Ukwu, Ossomari, Aboh, etc..." Re: How To Unveil And Promote Ancient Igbo Civilisation by Etinosa1234: 4:13pm On Aug 12, 2020 |
Obalatule: Lol...lets use ur analogy... Ankara is a name of a fabric in Nigeria... automatically.. Nigerians were the ones that originally settled in the Turkish capital Ankara Or The English word chicken may have originated from the great Igbo miscreants due to the presence of chi Or The word Edo is also used in Japan... Therefore the Benin Empire stretched to Asia Or Even the name of ur tribe Igbo is a clear indication that the Yorubas once rules over u... I could go on and on Similarities in language is not a valid source to prove history 1 Like |

Etinosa1234: Nri maintained cultural overlordship over Onitsha, Igala, Ife and Benin. Secondly, Zik wrote just a few decades ago, while the Portuguese wrote their stuff many centuries ago. In none of the writings was it claimed that Nri was subordinate to Benin. It's always the case that Nri maintained a fatherly gaze on Benin, Onitsha, Zik, Oba Ewuare I, Oba Nogbaisi e.t.c 2 Likes |

Etinosa1234:i have touched on this before, This migrations were most likely descendants of the Nri Royals in Bini who started leaving for different reasons, EZEchima is unarguably an Igbo name, I don't understand how Zik couldnt put two and two together to understand that they were always Igbos who left Bini and not Bini indigenes fleeing bini...All the evidence in this account point to that fact, look at the name Gbunwala, a word with a complete Igbo meaning 2 Likes |

Etinosa1234: And of course, the fact that every Oba MUST, and I repeat MUST get permission from the sitting Eze Nri, before he's recognized by the empire as a true Oba. A sea of cultural influence the Nris taught you guys Not forgetting the fact that you, your father and your ancestors must bow to every Oba, no matter how inconsequential, while at the same time, I don't have to bow to any Oba, be it Oba Iweka (EWEKA), Ewuare I, or any other Oba. |
