John 8:58:

"Jesus said to them: 'Most truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into existence, I AM (prin Abraam genesthai
ego eimi)."

This passage is perhaps one of the strongest affirmations to the Deity of Christ, and yet one of the most controversial as well.

"God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM (ehyeh asher ehyeh). This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has
sent me to you.'" NIV

Hence, Jesus' I AM statements seemingly identify him with the I AM of Exodus, Yahweh God. If this is the case, this would
affirm that Jesus explicitly claimed to be Yahweh God.

However, not all agree that Jesus' I AM statements are direct claims to Yahweh. This is based primarily on the fact that the
phrase "I AM WHO I AM" can legitimately be translated as "I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE." This is due to the verb from
which the phrase stems.

The Hebrew phrase ehyeh asher ehyeh is derived from the verb hayah, "will be." It is often given the following meanings in
standard Hebrew Dictionaries: "was, come to pass, came, has been, has happened, become, pertained, better for thee."

Other meanings include:

1.to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out

1a) to happen, fall out, occur, take place, come about, come to pass

1b) to come about, come to pass

2) to come into being, become

2a) to arise, appear, come

2b) to become

2b1) to become

2b3) to be instituted, be established

3) to be

3a) to exist, be in existence

3b) to abide, remain, continue (with word of place or time)

3c) to stand, lie, be in, be at, be situated (with word of locality)

3d) to accompany, be with "

Furthermore, the phrase "I AM" is used 72 times in the Hebrew Bible by a number of Prophets including David, Moses, etc.

When used of Yahweh it implies two things. First, it implies that Yahweh is a timeless Being, that Israel's God is eternal.Secondly, it implies that Yahweh will do as he pleases since he has the infinite power to accomplish all that he wills with none to resist him. In other words, Yahweh is sovereign over all things and all things subsist in him.

In order to establish the case that Jesus was claiming to be Yahweh, we must see in what matter does Jesus use the phrase. Does he use it to imply timeless existence and sovereignty? Or did he use it to simply identify himself as the person whom others were seeking much like the blind man of John 9:9 did when asked if he were the one healed by Jesus?

Fortunately, we don't have to look far to find the answer to our question since the answer is there in John 8:58. Jesus' usage of the phrase is to contrast Abraham's beginning with his lack of beginning. In others, Jesus was unlike Abraham since the latter was brought into existence whereas Christ always was. This is brought out more clearly in the Greek verbs John uses to contrast Abraham's origins with the timeless existence of Christ, namely genesthai and eimi:

... the aorist genesthai 'came into being,' used of Abraham, is contrasted with the present eimi, which can express duration up to the present, 'I have been <and still am>' as well as the simple present, 'I am.' Jesus claims that his mode of existence transcends time, like God's, and his I am is understood by the Jews as a claim to equality with God...

Jesus' answer was in terms of age........stop writing all this hogwash to prove a little point...........and Gods name is not ""I AM""............God told moses his name in the next verse of that exodus you quoted..........the tetragrammaton was not mentioned in that john 8:58........the pharisees were asking how he could know so much about abraham (when he wasn't even up to 50 year)s and then there question that was directed to Jesus was as regards how long Jesus had existed(age)............and Jesus told them he existed before abraham(I AM)...........I agree Jesus existed before abraham, but those words of Jesus never connotes he is the same with God...only one who has no where to run to would look at that scripture and misconstrue Jesus" words.....

You yourself was able to confirm that the words I AM THAT I AM used in exodus could also be rendered as "I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE."..........."" WILL BE"".........

Imagine if we use the expression ""WILL BE"" in place of ""I AM"" in john 8:58 how would it sound??.......

before abraham was ""WILL BE""........

How does that sound to your ears??............does it tally with the expression ""I AM".........................

Besides the tetragrammaton YHWH was used in exodus, was it used in john 8:58??...........

Jesus only made the pharisees know that he existed before abraham....chikena.......

BIDAM stop thinking like the pharisees who misconstrue Jesus' words so as to reject him as the messiah...........if the pharisees had gone back to the books of the prophets and psalms they would have known that Jesus existed before abraham and all of them......but they were poor bible students.......don't be like the pharisees my brother...grin........

Hehehehe.....I don get you well well...........what deity of Christ again??.......the only 1 true GOD is the Father and the Father alone and not the son nor a combo of the Father and the son............what leads to eternal life is knowing the only true GOD(Yahweh) and his son(Jesus) whom he(Yahweh) sent............chikena...........your deity issue is not necessary for eternal life.........
I don't know the age of Jesus Christ.....the bible didn't mention the date Jesus was born.......Jesus spent aeons of years with his Father in the heavens before descending to the earth as a man.............Jesus pre-existed as Gods firstborn son,Gods servant(as a spirit),Gods messenger before he was sent to the earth.............so Jesus rightly could open his mouth and tell the obstinate pharisees that before abraham was he existed..........I believe now you are clear with the fact that Jesus only telling the pharisees he existed before abraham and not claiming to be an equal to GOD his Father......

As i've always stated here, to have a clue about the Godhead you'll need to understand the nature of MAN
remember MAN was made in God's image according to the scripture, and i hope to believe we all believe MAN is made up of BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT.
Each of them are dependant on each other for survival, though the body seems to function more on earth as dictated by nature but nevertheless it does'nt make it less dependant on the soul & spirit.
They all co-exist and are very vital for the efficient livelyhood but once the body dies then shift of authority and responsibility goes to the spirit cos u will now forever exist in the spirit realm.
This describe how the Godhead likely function, three but one in function, unity.

who is writing hog wash to prove a little point? you no well at all after giving you the greek text of the meaning of "I AM"...you are here vomiting nonsense...go and make research on those words and stop deluding yourself..do you think the jews are angry and want to stone Jesus because Jesus claimed to be the messiah you did not get the import of what He was saying at all.listen ijawkiddy, Jesus was unlike Abraham since the latter was brought into existence whereas Christ always was. This is brought out more clearly in the Greek verbs John uses to contrast Abraham's origins with the timeless existence of Christ, namely genesthai and eimi:

... the aorist genesthai 'came into being,' used of Abraham, is contrasted with the present eimi, which can express duration up to the present, 'I have been <and still am>' as well as the simple present, 'I am.' Jesus claims that his mode of existence transcends time, like God's, and his I am is understood by the Jews as a claim to equality with God...
don't forget false prophets exist even before Jesus came on the scene, so who was JESUS to make such claim. lemme quote the whole scripture once again but this time from verse 54..so that it will sink into your thick skull what Jesus meant..If you were there you will stone Him just like you dey stone me with words now.. John 8:54-58
John 8:54-58
New International Version (NIV)
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Verily, verily - This is an expression used only in John. It is a strong affirmation denoting particularly the great importance of what was about to be affirmed. See the notes at John 3:5.

Before Abraham was - Before Abraham lived.

[b]I am - The expression I am, though in the present tense, is clearly designed to refer to a past time. Thus, in Psalm 90:2, "From everlasting to everlasting thou art God." Applied to God, it denotes continued existence without respect to time, so far as he is concerned. We divide time into the past, the present, and the future. The expression, applied to God, denotes that he does not measure his existence in this manner, but that the word by which we express the present denotes his continued and unchanging existence. Hence, he assumes it as his name, "I AM," and "I AM that I AM," Exodus 3:14. Compare Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 47:8. There is a remarkable similarity between the expression employed by Jesus in this place and that used in Exodus to denote the name of God. The manner in which Jesus used it would strikingly suggest the application of the same language to God. The question here was about his pre-existence. The objection of the Jews was that he was not 50 years old, and could not, therefore, have seen Abraham. Jesus replied to that that he existed before Abraham. As in his human nature he was not yet 50 years old, and could not, as a man, have existed before Abraham, this declaration must be referred to another nature; and the passage proves that, while he was a man, he was also endowed with another nature existing before Abraham, and to which he applied the term (familiar to the Jews as expressive of the existence of God) I AM; and this declaration corresponds to the affirmation of John Joh 1:1, that he was in the beginning with God, and was God. This affirmation of Jesus is one of the proofs on which John relies to prove that he was the Messiah John 20:31, to establish which was the design of writing this book.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
Before Abraham was, I am - The following is a literal translation of Calmet's note on this passage: - "I am from all eternity. I have existed before all ages. You consider in me only the person who speaks to you, and who has appeared to you within a particular time. But besides this human nature, which ye think ye know, there is in me a Divine and eternal nature. Both, united, subsist together in my person. Abraham knew how to distinguish them. He adored me as his God; and desired me as his Savior. He has seen me in my eternity, and he predicted my coming into the world." On the same verse Bishop Pearce speaks as follows: - "What Jesus here says relates (I think) to his existence antecedent to Abraham's days, and not to his having been the Christ appointed and foretold before that time; for, if Jesus had meant this, the answer I apprehend would not have been a pertinent one. He might have been appointed and foretold for the Christ; but if he had not had an existence before Abraham's days, neither could he have seen Abraham, (as, according to our English translation, the Jews suppose him to have said), nor could Abraham have seen him, as I suppose the Jews understood him to have said in the preceding verse, to which words of the Jews the words of Jesus here are intended as an answer."

DanielNoble: Isaiah 9:6 nko? The people couldnt accept him as the son how much God? If he said he is God it could have spoiled the Faith walk cos the people were so into the Law and spiritually empty.

But it was already in the prophecy that they will reject him. So telling them lies is even trying to make them accept him (according to you)? Did the prophets even said that it was God coming at the first place? This thing self tire me, it seems no one care about what was written down about the messiah. All Trinitarians do Is twist the new testament tomake Jesus Yahweh Himself. This is making the scripture contradicting itself. God cannot die, Jesus is God and died. GOd cannot be seen, Jesus is God and was seen. GOD can not be tempted, Jesus is God and was tempted. This make no sense and render the scripture false... angry

Bidam: who is writing hog wash to prove a little point? you no well at all after giving you the greek text of the meaning of "I AM"...you are here vomiting nonsense...go and make research on those words and stop deluding yourself..do you think the jews are angry and want to stone Jesus because Jesus claimed to be the messiah you did not get the import of what He was saying at all.listen ijawkiddy, Jesus was unlike Abraham since the latter was brought into existence whereas Christ always was. This is brought out more clearly in the Greek verbs John uses to contrast Abraham's origins with the timeless existence of Christ, namely genesthai and eimi:

the Jews(pharisees) never accepted Jesus as the promised messiah.......Jesus existed before abraham does not make him Yahweh or an equal to Yahweh......Christ also was brought into existence by the father,...have you forgotten so quick??.....Jesus' life was kick started by Yahweh.....get that into your head.....

john 6:57
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me
.....Jesus exists and live because of the father........because we dont know when exactly Jesus came into existence in no way negates the fact that he had a bbeginning........again jesus rightly told the pharisees that before abraham was "I AM"........he existed before abraham....

Bidam:
... the aorist genesthai 'came into being,' used of Abraham, is contrasted with the present eimi, which can express duration up to the present, 'I have been <and still am>' as well as the simple present, 'I am.' Jesus claims that his mode of existence transcends time, like God's, and his I am is understood by the Jews as a claim to equality with God...
don't forget false prophets exist even before Jesus came on the scene, so who was JESUS to make such claim. lemme quote the whole scripture once again but this time from verse 54..so that it will sink into your thick skull what Jesus meant..If you were there you will stone Him just like you dey stone me with words now..

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
imagine your Yaweh glorifying JESUS...selah on this

there goes the disingenuous BIDAM....do you remember when i quoted acts 3:13 for you to read??....your brain did not send a signal that Jesus was glorified by his father....now that you are so desperate to soread falsehood you remembered Yahweh glorified his son,...

please let me remind you again of acts 3:13

New International Version (©1984)
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.

New Living Translation (©2007)
For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--the God of all our ancestors--who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, despite Pilate's decision to release him.

do you agree Jesus is Gods servant??talking about glorification,Yahweh glorifies any of his servants or sons provided the glorify him....and in this context jesus said his own self glorification means nothing(i wonder why the professed almighty god would say this),until the glory comes from the father ...

join me in reading this scripture that would totally debunk your post...

1 samuel 2:30
Douay-Rheims Bible
Wherefore thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father should minister in my sight, for ever. But now saith the Lord: Far be this from me: but whosoever shall glorify me, him will I glorify: but they that despise me, shall be despised.

God glorifies anybody(his servants)......so Jesus being glorified by Yahweh shows one thing::::: that Jesus was indeed the holy servant of GOD and God confirmed it.....

i know you must be shaking your head......i would debunk you till you have no where to hide

ijewkid: GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) You heard me tell you, 'I'm going away, but I'm coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. _______________________________

Expanded Bible (EXB) 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going, but I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you should ·be happy [rejoice] that I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.

Please explain what the expression I AM connotes in that verse and tell me why Jesus who is the professed ""I AM" in exodus as you and your ilks claim is lesser than the FATHER..........(Yahweh greater than Jesus = Jesus lesser than Yahweh)......

Makes perfect sense cos the spirit of man, or the spirit of life comes from God and enters the unborn baby in the womb of the
pregnant woman (Ecclesiastes 11:5) and returns to God on our death (Ecclesiastes 12:7). It is the spirit that
gives us life and is owned by God (1 Corinthians 6:20). The Lord is God of the spirits of all flesh (Numbers
27:16). Just before Jesus died, He committed His spirit to God (Luke 23:46). When Jesus died, He gave up
the spirit of life (John 19:30). When Stephen died, Jesus received his spirit (Acts 7:59). Jesus was put to
death in His human body, but He was made alive in the spirit. That left Jesus free to preach to people who
had died and whose spirits were in Hades, the waiting place of the dead that is also called a prison (1 Peter
3:18 & 19) so they could live for God in the spirit (1 Peter 4:6).

Young's Literal Translation
Jesus said to them, 'Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

He might have been appointed and foretold for the Christ; but if he had not had an existence before Abraham's days, neither could he have seen Abraham, (as, according to our English translation, the Jews suppose him to have said), nor could Abraham have seen him, as I suppose the Jews understood him to have said in the preceding verse, to which words of the Jews the words of Jesus here are intended as an answer."

thanks for the copy and paste job...you do well grin grin grin

now lets analyze the greek word that was used there in john 8:58 and compare it with one or 2 places where it occured....

the greek word used in that verse was " Ego eimi".......
this word was used often in the book John....
example::::
1.....john 4:25-26
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”( ego eimi)....

2....john 18:5-6
International Standard Version (©2012)
5..They answered him, "Jesus from Nazareth." Jesus told them, "I AM."( ego eimi) Judas, the man who betrayed him, was standing with them.6.When Jesus told them,"I AM," they backed away and fell to the ground.

3....john 9:9....
American King James Version
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he( ego eimi).

the blind man Jesus healed identified himself as ""I AM"( ego eimi).....

In the Greek Septuagint, the actual divine name given to Moses was not simply, "ego eim ," but was rather, "ego eimi ho on which means "I am the being" or "I am the existence" or "I am the existent one" or some similar concept. The divine name was not simply the two words ego eimi as Trinitarians/modalism adherents (like bidam) suggestively imply.......

only frauds would wrench john 8:58 to mean that Jesus implied he was Yahweh and then neglect the other places where the greek word "ego eim" was used for Jesus and other persons to mean some other thing ......smh...

@bidam.....i hope the blind man Jesus healed was also Yahweh??

learn to read and understand the bible and not just copy and paste write ups from online.....

meanwhile i should remind you that any angel in heaven could have also used the expression ""I AM"" if they were Jesus' shoes....you might ask me why

joe4christ: As i've always stated here, to have a clue about the Godhead you'll need to understand the nature of MAN
remember MAN was made in God's image according to the scripture, and i hope to believe we all believe MAN is made up of BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT.
This describe how the Godhead likely function, three but one in function, unity.
i think God the Father is the Soul of Jesus.
